On our first night in St. Charles for the Jazz Fest, we headed into The House Pub to hear a great horn player. Frank Capalano was the reason we went in, but the cool vibe kept us there for a few hours. The vintage building looked great on the outside. The big brick building looked like there was some history behind those doors. We walked into a dark room with two levels, a big bar flanking one side of the room and a stage with a dancefloor. I could tell people have fun here. We snagged a small table and listened to the 4-piece band while sipping on an ice-cold beer. The bartender Chris was fantastic. He got busy but never forgot us. There was a popcorn machine which was great, but I was hoping for a meal or at least an appetizer, since I had just gotten off work. It does have the word PUB in it's name. Oh well, the music kept us too busy all night to think about food. The place seems as though it has gotten a facelift. It looks restored not renovated. Everything was super clean, which is always a good thing. I really enjoyed my night at The House Pub and would definitely stop in again the next time I am in town. read more

Beer. Bands. (foos)Balls. I can dig. Oh yeah. A gem of the truest kind. For sure. With a giant chalkboard menu of consisting of hundreds of craft beers from near and far, you can't go wrong. My pick for poison? Mannequin Piss. Also known as Blanche De Bruxelles. A Belgian Wit with a funny nickname and whizzing boy on the bottle front. FANTASTIC and highly recommended. Most of the beer selection is in bottles. Ideally, I'd like for there to many more on tap... or for there to be some distinction on the board whether something is or isn't a tap vs bottle BUT I can't deny they're having the best beer selection in St. Charles. The bands featured upstairs on the weekends are always fun but that 2nd level gets packed and hotter than hell- to the point of feeling moist from all the layers of bodies. And beware of the bathrooms located on the second floor as you *technically* need to climb 3 sets of stairs to get to. Just something to think about when you're undoubtedly drinking heaps of delicious craft beer. On the other hand, you can read some of the colorful things other people have written on the bathroom walls and stalls if you make the trek... and it's defo worth the trek. read more

Popped in to The House Pub with my hubby for a couple quick drinks before meeting our photographer for a fun date night photo shoot. It was a rainy day in suburbia, so we honestly chose this bar because it was the closest to where we parked! I'm glad we did though. It's a smaller place than I thought, but they have plenty of small tables and seats up at the bar. There's a foosball table and a stage too. They apparently have live music every night of the week which is pretty cool. We were there at like 6 p.m. on a Sunday though, so the festivities weren't starting until about 9 p.m. We grabbed a seat up at the bar and were overwhelmed by the amount of beers they have to offer! Craft beer central here folks. Oddly enough, I wasn't in a beer mood (which doesn't happen often), so I went with a Tito's vodka and tonic. Pretty standard. After that I asked if they had wine (because I didn't see any behind the bar), and they do! Of course it was Barefoot wine, so not the greatest but it's not like I'm not used to drinking that! They had a few different kinds to choose from, so I went with a Pinot Nior. My husband ordered a couple vanilla porters. Our bartender was really friendly and funny. To be honest, it wasn't the worst experience or the best. I think this was mostly due to the fact that I just wasn't in the mood for this scene. I was hoping to order an appetizer to tide us over until dinner, but they don't offer food. Instead of having music playing in the background they had the sound on the TVs, so it was a sports bar kind of vibe instead of a cool craft beer-esque cafe I had hoped for. Don't even bother with this place if you aren't what the staff deem as "cool". Having worked over 10 years in the industry, I know that nothing warrants the shitty service that I had at this establishment. I happened to be on a family bar crawl and I was ignored at the bar simply because I was wearing a bar crawl tshirt. The bartender made eye contact with me several times, and even went so far as to mock me when I tried to call him over. I never said anything rude, never made a face, just patiently waited my turn. He waited on everyone else around me. I had to ask someone standing next to me to order for me because I was being ignored. This went on for 15 minutes. And the bar was not busy. There's no reason to ignore a customer simply because you don't like the way they look. If I went by that rule, I never would have paid my way through college. Asshole. read more

The House Pub boasts that their large selection of brews (126 delicious beers to satiate a need for variety, to be exact) will meet any craving you have, whether it be the "schwag" like Miller Lite, or something a little more upscale, like Magic Hat. This bar is like a game of russian roulette where you'll most likely be content with whatever beverage you choose but if you're really lucky, you'll find that one bullet, ahem, beer that'll create a huge impact on you (thankfully, instead of a bullet to the dome, you get a taste of some of the best barley pops ever). The owner, Steve, is incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to the drinks he offers and steered me in the right direction when he suggested a Breckenridge Brewery Vanilla Porter; now it's the only beer I'll get when I'm there. Meander upstairs to the Lounge, which has the romantic date-night ambience complete with hazy red lighting and walls lined with leather couches that any girl (or dude attempting to impress a chick) would love. The jazz groups that play here every Thursday evening and the extensive martini menu will guarantee you'll come back upstairs for more. read more

Best beer bar in St. Charles far as I can tell. Last time I went here was after band practice. I had a couple Double Crooked Trees, a few shots, and I think some more beer? After the second D.C.T. I don't remember. I don't remember paying the bill or walking to my friends house either. Good thing we walked. That was just one good time at The House Pub. Awesome atmosphere! This place is chilled out and has a good jukebox. There are live bands upstairs on the weekends. The upstairs area has a cool jazz lounge thing going on. The bathrooms have very entertaining graffiti on the mens' stalls. I cant speak about the womans' bathroom, but hopefully its just as colorful! The only detraction is there is no food other than a popcorn maker. I always like to munch on snacks when I drink craft beer, and popcorn is hell on my teeth. read more

S.L.O.W. This is only a bar, and you're lucky to get the bartender's attention! The seats are old, uncomfortable, and in a drafty building. Bonus: it's full of hipsters and the bathroom is a HOT mess. Restaurant rule of thumb: you can expect the same level of attention & cleanliness in the food/drink area as you see in the restroom. Places that appeal to clusters of unhygienic bearded dudes in plaid (that have exceeded their critical mass) tend not to last, especially with a disproportionate balance of attractive women. It was late on a Saturday afternoon that we decided to go to The House Pub. We had some food at our favorite Mexican joint before going because they don't serve food. The bar is on a corner and there was plenty of parking available in the nearby lots. We immediately took a seat at the small bar with about 10 stools. Despite the large windows, I would still say this place has the "dank" that I like in a good bar. It is an old building and there was plenty of wood and brick. There were a couple of TVs, but not overly intrusive. The music was at a good level that allowed conversation... at least until a band came in later. Behind the bar,the entire wall is a chalkboard menu. They only have 12 beers on tap, with a mix of good and not so good. I prefer draft beer, but the real treat is the bottled beer selection. There must have been over 80 beers. (I didn't actually count.) I had some delicious beers from Stone Brewing and Dark Horse. They also had many others, but I cannot remember them all. The bartender/owner, Steve took good care of us all night long. It was fun to talk beer with him and it was clear that he liked beer. It is nice to see someone taking a chance on a different kind of bar in this land of yellow beers. In addition to the beer bar room, there is a lounge type of room upstairs with another bar and couches for seating. We were told that they don't serve the full selection of beer upstairs, just the 12 taps. They are concentrating on martinis and scotch instead. I suppose you could walk down and get your beer yourself. We only took a quick tour of the upstairs because it had been reserved for a private party. While it was dead quiet when we first arrived, the place did get more crowded after 9. A two man guitar jam started up and a bunch of pub crawlers flooded the place. Not usually my kind of scene, but we had staked out our spot at the bar, so we survived. Overall, we had a great time at The House Pub. The beer selection is mostly bottles, but it is better than I have at home. The prices are reasonable, but may seem high if you are not familiar with the beers. I wish there were backs on the stools and a bar foot rail for comfort. I like to hang out for a good long time sipping my beer. I will be back. read more

This is my favorite destination in the western suburbs for beer. There are over 75 different beers ranging from macro brews like miller to craft beers like Three Floyds. The atmosphere is awesome and if you go between Thursday and Saturday you can sit upstairs in a very relaxing lounge. Complete with leather couches and smooth jazz. The service is on par with any other bar and at any given time you can meet the owners. There is no food at this location outside of free popcorn. Entertainment is very good as well. Music is live a couple of times a week, with open mics and live jazz. The game room has some a few games like golden tee Overall, if you have any interest in beer you need to find your way down to The House Pub. read more

Would love to give this place a good review because they have some great live music and good selection of beer but... The bartender/owner is rude and the service is bad. I have now been here a few times and each time the service has been slow, I've been WAY OVERCHARGED on my card with other people's drinks because the bar is clearly disorganized and it has been hard to get resolved to be reimbursed. The bartender/owner was so rude it was incredibly upsetting I can't even go into it here. I would not recommend this bar. Now that we've gotten that out of the way: Our final stop on Girls Night Out, we had a blast! The beer selection blew me away. Really? This many delicious beers in the bar behind my job? Where have you been all my life? There are two (and a half) levels to this sweet pub, the first is the main bar/live music area. High top tables, a bar with a huge chalk board beer list, and great jazz music during our visit. Oh yeah-don't forget about the old-time popcorn machine. Help yourself, my friends, it's tasty stuff. Up a few stairs, you hit some pool tables and a nice area to hear the band without losing your ear drums. Rock on with your bad self. Then head all the way up to the second level for a dimly lit lounge with couches, a smaller bar, and a DJ. Awesome. Oh yeah, I'll definitely be back. read more

I would give House Pub 5 stars if they had a kitchen and the downstairs decor was a little more to look at. But on second thought, it would be super packed with the typical STC bar crowd, which could become very annoying. I must note, I have not see the martini lounge. It was not open when I was there. A few friends and I went here last night after seeing a jump swing band at the Arcada, and I was surprised and impressed at the ambiance, music, and drink selection. This is a great live music bar, with a higher hipster quotient than most St. Charles bars, meaning there were about 8. (just joking) Actually, I don't like jock bars where I feel like I have to pull out my Be-dazzler for the evening, and most bars on Main St make me feel this way, so I felt very comfortable walking in with my "artsy" friends and our non-glitter make up. I also dig the big open screened windows which were fantastic for blowing in an evening breeze. Great beer selection, we'll definitely be back. read more

This is my go to bar in DT STC! They always have great live music, a fun atmosphere, and quite an extensive selection of BEER (and cinders)! Do not come here asking for mixed drinks...while they might make it I doubt they enjoy serving them. This is pretty much just a beer bar. It was one of those nights when I wished I didn't have to get up early and I could have just stayed 'till close. I experienced love at first sight when I walked through the door and immediately saw the ginormous beer menu behind the bar. The selection is impressive with more than 20 on tap and even some select, rare bottled brews. The chalkboard categorized the beers in both useful and entertaining ways.( ie. There was even a category called "Skunk.") My husband and I had to splurge and go for the $25 bottle of Avery Uncle Jacob's Stout, which is bourbon-barrel aged. OMG, so rich in taste and body with a 17.4 percent. Let's just say I was happy to share with the hubby because it was like feasting on a slice of decadent chocolate cake - I love just a little bit of dessert but can't simply overindulge on intense flavor. After getting our beer, we listened to live music on the first floor for a bit but grew tired of standing in the crowded area so we trekked up to the third. The atmosphere went from feeling like a dive bar to a swankier lounge with the leather couches and fireplace. It was relaxing to kick up our feet in front of the hearth to finish off our drinks. I can't wait to return and go through the rest of the beer selection more thoroughly. This would be fun place to bring along other beer snobs and/or anyone wanting a lively yet casual night on the town. read more

I am such a nerd for chalkboard menus. Nothing beats the selection or the prices, but the latter may be due to my recent obsession with craft cocktails in Chicago. Initially, I was sad to learn that the House Pub does not have a kitchen, but they let you bring in whatever food and had take-out menus for us to look at. We got a few pizzas delivered and my gluttonous self was very pleased. Even if you don't go that route, they have free popcorn for you to munch on. I was also sad because the band scheduled for the night I went was a total no show. And that you had to drag your tipsy butt up two flights of stairs to access the bathrooms. read more

The House Pub is a neat bar in St. Charles. I am unfamiliar with the area as I live in the city but I came here for a Surprise Birthday party. The owner couldn't have been more accommodating to us. Love this place. I'm not usually into live bands I've never heard of (I'm more into electronic music) but I love the ambience of this place, the massive beer selection and on the weekend the martini bar they have upstairs that usually plays *gasp* electronic music! (albeit it's more mellow electronic, not crazy rave, club music). I've tried the absinthe they serve upstairs, while it is cool to say I've had absinthe here I won't be doing that again (Black licorice taste! not my thing! LOL). The martini bar is my favorite area of this place because of the loungey, laid back feel. There's a few black leather couches and a small bar. It feels very cozy and welcoming. I went here yesterday for the first time (yes Black Wednesday) on a whim not really expecting anything special. Boy, was I wrong. After coming here a few more times, I'm bumping the House Pub up to 4 stars. Why? Well, since my review, they made the stage area a lot larger, the decor is way cooler- i.e. the exposed brick wall has some chalk areas now which displays the band playing and later gigs lined up for the month, and also in the back, they added more arcade games and tv. The beer selection is still awesome and the prices are great! Fantastic beer selection, multiple seating levels, and an upstairs lounge that provides respite from the knackery and horseplay happening on the main floor. The music was classic hipster emo-scream-tripe, but the quality of the music comes up dramatically the more beers you drink. The only drawback is that people insist on propping the bathroom doors open upstairs beside the lounge area, so the concertina of bathroom usage is projected by the fine tile acoustics into the lounge in vivid detail. read more

So I should currently be fussed w/ M. I gave strict instructions that if I was to schlep out to St. Charles, aka as close to the rural Midwest as I care to be when home visiting my parents up North, I wanted to go hard. And by that I mean that I assumed that it would be tacky as eff and would need to be directed to a place that embraced the spirit of how ridiculous it is to meet for drinks in a town w more car dealerships than ppl who ever need F450s and a plethora of some of 'Merica's finest "fast casual" dining establishments. A bar w/ a mechanical bull was mentioned, but someeeeeone didn't deliver. However, where we did end up was shockingly lovely....and dare I say...hip...? Like not just hip in that way where fedoras are now just finding their way to the town 5 years after everywhere else in the States was like "get that thing off your head stat" - but, like, pleasantly bumping by any standard other than the absurd scale I whip out when reviewing places in Brooklyn where there is a strict number of unironic overalls, facial hair, and questionable tats that must be met prior to receiving this fine designation from this reviewer. I digress - rolled in on a random Wednesday shortly after the weather had turned warm- crowd was a mix of mid-20s to 40s, men in jorts were present but not oppressive, ladies went casual in jeans and tanks - overall, a terribly friendly group that skewed slightly small-town bro in that way where everyone is super polite and you can trust your neighbors to watch your drinks while you duck away for a sec. They have live music nightly - Wednesday is open mic night, which, in personal experience, is usually a recipe for an ear splitting headache and a mountain of regretting abt leaving my house - but at The House, the performers are by and large totally legit with vocal stylings ranging from a surprisingly soulful rendition of MJ's Billy Jean to someone wailing on a keyboard/harmonica combo in a way that made me primarily envious of his coordination, but also, of his straight up BAMF nature. They have a chalkboard with approximately 1039484 beer options, generally divided by type (wheat, ales, stouts, etc) - didn't hit the cocktails, though they're also in the mix - and w most of the beer options ranging from $5-7, it's a steal - and the cocktails not much more, literally anyone can find something to get happily tips on here. Sure, it's loud - we were shouting at each other abt the struggles of planning trips to Southeast Asia and/or Africa b/c life is HARD - and it was initially a challenge for me to get the attn of the bartender - but overall, if this place was close to home, I'd never be disappointed to end up here. If, for some g-d forsaken reason you're in St. C (which, FYI, pretty cute downtown, very civilized) - aka, you work for E&Y or Accenture and are being put up at their conference center down the street - The House was great enough that I didn't even miss the LOLZ that would have been obtained by going somewhere actually tragic. Nice atmosphere, great selection of beer. Even if you are not normally a beer drinker, there are so many varieties that you will find something that you will like. They do still serve regular hard alcohol however. Upstairs they have a menu of martinis and more expensive, aged varieties of liquor. The beer selection boggles the mind. Feeling adventurous we ordered the daily specials written on the chalkboard wall. $4 Breckenridge Avalanche $6 Deschutes Fresh Squeezed. It was a Wednesday with a pretty decent open mic happening so it was too busy and loud to ask the bartender about these 2 beers. To be honest, I felt like I should have known that one was an amber ale and the other an IPA. It's definitely a hipster beer connoisseur place.
