Home Doctors agreed to come out and identify and order the parts for my Andersen windows so that they could later come back and install the new trim packs, and lubricate the windows. There were several issues with scheduling and changes from their end, and they charged a fee to come out to Sonoma County (which I accepted). They arrived and lubricated the windows, and told me that they'd order the parts and return to install them. I was surprised at the cost of this very short visit which included replacing a tandem lock and I was charged $75 for the part which is available for $18 on Amazon. I followed up a few times to check on the progress but didn't get clear info. Nearly 3 months later, I asked again and was told that they were waiting for me to 'accept the estimate' which I had never received. I had been told it would be a month or so to get the parts and then a couple of weeks to schedule, so this was disappointing. I finally saw the estimate and saw that they were charging me $73 for each trim kit, although they are available online for $16. I understand that business put a mark up on parts, but that's nearly 5x markup and combined with the confusing and inadequate scheduling and communications, it was a frustrating experience. read more

I have a philosophy that only about 10% of the folks out there are truly great at their jobs. This helps me keep my expectations reasonable. When I luck onto a professional or business that is exemplary, it is such a joy: The Home Doctors are such a business. They remodeled my kitchen in 1999 and have helped me with many small fix-it things that continually come up as a home owner. I have hired many handymen and women. Because I often don't want to pay that much, I have hired a lot of people that have done poor jobs or wasted my time by taking way too long on projects or just not having the smarts to effectively solve a plumbing problem, or even a simple thing such as how to hang curtain rods well. With the Home Docs, I can say this is what I need, and they can do it. No puzzled looks, hemming and hawing, strange outcomes. I have total trust. It seems most everybody gets frustrated with contractors, comes with the territory. But I can honestly say I have never had a complaint. Well, one. They charge an arm and a leg. But I have learned the hard way you get what you pay for. There are ways to work with them (get the materials yourself) that will make the jobs less expensive. I also just like dealing with Craig and Tapley on the phone, as well as their employee Chris, and others who have come to my house. I read a couple of the complaints on this site, and I am not sure what happened as my experience has been 100% positive. They can be a little slow on the phone returns, but they are not a huge business and when they do reach you they are relaxed and intelligent and such a pleasure to discuss things with. read more

The Home Doctors have done two repair jobs for me in recent months--one large, one small. In both cases, their expertise and attention to detail were excellent! The large job involved repairing and lubricating several Andersen Windows with mechanisms that had failed or were sticking. This required removing a piece of wood casing at the base of some windows, but since it was done with such care it's impossible to see, as in no paint touch ups needed. The small job was re-securing some exterior siding, above a sliding door, that had warped in the summer heat. Not only was the siding carefully put back into place, but caulking was done to ensure there'd be no leaks when the winter rains arrive. These folks are pros in every sense of the word! read more

The Home Doctors have been my attending house physicians for 15 years. It started with hurricane-force winds and rain that made a joke out of the french doors on the weather side of the house we had just bought. We keep a list of things we need to have done, then Tapley comes out and takes measurements and pictures and an estimate arrives in a few days. Everyone is nice, the work gets done, they are careful with your house, nobody gets hurt. Tapley used to do theatrical lighting, so feel free to lean on him for advice there. read more

I've had nothing but a very positive experience with the 3 people I dealt with. I don't know their prices to be fair b/c I got them through a deal but everything else was excellent. I had a door that was sticking (among other things) and spoke to Tapley who gave me a time they would come and they stuck to it. That is worth a lot to me. Then, when they came it was raining so they couldn't complete the job so they put a temporary fix in for me after which I forgot about it. However, Tapley called me a couple of times to remind me that he still owed me the work (he'd already been paid). That is great. Craig and the Home Doctor's crew and sub contractors rock! They have remodeled our 50 year old master bath, kitchen, and great room with care, professionalism, and timeliness. Their attention to detail, quality craftsmanship, and transparency are why I strongly recommend The Doctors and will use them for all future projects. As anybody who has gone through complicated remodels or upgrades knows, there are always unforeseen issues and costs, especially with older homes. Sometimes these issues are frustrating and cause one to wonder if they made the correct contractor choice. What I appreciate about Craig is his understanding and empathy of how theses situations effect the homeowner and how hard he and his crew work to mitigate them. i am just writing my check to The Home Doctors and happy to be done with them - Tapley came out and i thought WOW All my home issues can now be done easily with these guys - first up was to change out a utility sink in the laundry room - i paid for the sink separately - the total for the change out was about 1,000$$ (this is including 105$ of materials) - it took a very nice gentleman (not Tapley) who made a mess of the room since the sink (that Tapley had recc) did not fit the space and the area had to be widened almost 8+ hours and he left a residue around the sink of gunk that took me 2+hours to remove - when i complained about how the job was left i got some attitude and then some platitudes - lesson learned $1,000 later i will continue to look for people to work on my house - NOT THESE GUYS read more

This would have been a 5-star review if not for the poor communication of the office staff. Mike, the technician who serviced our Andersen Wood Doors, was great. However, getting the appointment set up and the time confirmed with the office was not easy. Calls were not returned and the promised communication with the time window for the appointment did not happen. Also, the technician was frustrated that the information about the work needed was not collected when I made the appointment. I recently purchased a new house and during the process, we discovered an issue with the roof in the garage. My Realtor had arranged for The Home Doctors Inc. to come take a look and provide me with an estimate. The house was currently rented and it was difficult to gain access but they were able to schedule a time that would work. One hour before I was supposed to meet with my Realtor and The Home Doctors, I received a phone call saying that the contractor was not coming due to a family emergency. Understanding that these things happen, I was willing to forgive. Instead of offering to reschedule the visit though, The Home Doctors wanted to give me an estimate via email purely based upon photos that my Realtor was going to take. Anyone in the construction business or with any logical person will know that an estimate is completely worthless if the contractor has not even visited the home. The next day my Realtor informed me that she was quoted $7500 but was not given any documentation or details on how they would fix the problem or what timeline that would entail. Although putting this off anymore would put me in a difficult position to close on my house in time, I was completely unsatisfied with this and so I scheduled another appointment a week later after the tenants had moved out. This time I had another contractor come as well. This time, the partner of the original contractor came to inspect the house. When he arrived, he made didn't say anything about failing to show up for our last meeting, let alone apologize about it. After all was said and done, he had the same approach to the problem and seemed reasonably knowledgeable. Being in a bind to close on time, I asked him if I could get a written estimate by the next day. He told me that was a very aggressive request of him and that he wouldn't be able to do it because he was done working as soon as he left the house and would be inspecting other properties the next day. I told him that I wouldn't have had this tight of a schedule if he had shown up the last time. He got quite defensive and told me that was his partner who was supposed to have come. He then told me that he might be able to talk with his partner and whip up something informal for me in the next day or two although it definitely would not be legally binding and prior to beginning work he would want to reassess the cost and timing of everything. At this point I completely lost hope because there was no way that I would hire him and just let him leave. As it turns out, his estimate came in at approximate $5500 which was twice the amount of the other contractor. On top of that, he wanted to be paid weekly for a project that had no projected end date. The other contractor said it was going to take 2 days. The Home Doctors may have been able to do a good job, but I would never suggest to even a complete stranger to hire someone who so completely does not care about the needs of the customer. I strongly suggest that you tread lightly and make sure to protect yourself if you choose to hire the Home Doctors. They proved to me without a shadow of a doubt that they are incapable of treating their customers with the respect they deserve. I could never trust that they would do a job to my satisfaction on time and within budget. When dealing with me, it was very apparent that I was not anywhere near the top of their priority list. For your own sake, I suggest that you think twice and trust your gut before hiring The Home Doctors. read more

I interviewed numerous contractors to repair a chronic leak (which one contractor many years ago said he fixed but never did) and thankfully I found Craig + his team at Home Doctors. Home Doctors was simply AMAZING! They were utterly professional, exceptionally knowledgeable & thoroughly diligent in repairing our leak as well as other issues that arose from opening up the space. They obviously take great pride in their workmanship & our finished project is truly awesome. It actually rained a couple of times during the project, so they could see the significant leak areas, but this didn't stop them from doing a great job. They sealed everything up and in fact a subsequent rain came after the exterior part was done -- to our relief, they fixed the leak!!! They worked well around my kids + pets. It was great knowing we finally found a trustworthy contractor who knows their work, takes pride in it & stays within the budget. They did such an exceptional job on sourcing & sealing the leak, that we had them also repair & seal our large deck -- no surprises here as I'm just as happy with this part of the project, too. When we do our next renovation, I'm going to use them -- Home Doctors does it all and I know they can be trusted to do great work. read more

I've had The Home Doctors fix a variety of things around my house for almost ten years and never had a problem. Mike has been here several times for window issues and is always very professional. I've dealt with Craig mostly on scheduling work and recently had them out to fix some water damage to the outside stucco. Everyone who worked on it was very professional and got the job done pretty quickly. We had a window develop a stress-fracture after it had been in place for about a year. The "Window Warehouse" that we bought it from took a very long time (over five months, admittedly over the Holiday season), but did eventually get a replacement window and lined up the "Home Doctors" to do the replacement. They were excellent. There were a few delays arranging scheduling due to the Warehouse folks (again) and the weather, but the actual execution was really very impressive. The guy Craig sent (Michael, I believe), was professional, intelligent, meticulous and thoughtful. This was large pane of double glazing, about 5 feet by 4, on the second floor, but he determined that he could single-hand the job, and through care and precision, he did, without the slightest misstep. I've done some construction as contractor, laborer and owner and I admit I hovered a bit in case a hand was needed, but it never was. He took every precaution, both for the job he worked on and the house around it, and made the change-out impeccably, leaving the place cleaner and neater than when he started. We have definitely found our source for any work we need for our house from now on. If they'll do it - we'll be happy to hire them. read more

Our house was broken into recently by the burglars smashing a glass patio door. Needless to say, getting the door repaired quickly was a top priority so we could restore security to our house. On top of this, my wife was having surgery so we needed the door repaired before she returned home from the hospital. Chris and Mike (the installer) were very understanding about and responsive to our needs. Chris made sure the door arrived on time from the factory, and Mike was prompt, friendly and incredibly efficient installing the door (he even corrected a few small but important things the contractor who originally installed the door got wrong - without being asked). If you are patient, you will be rewarded. I think I had to book an appointment one month out but the service was superb. I had some ten year old Anderson sliding doors that had become difficult to operate. Their service person was excellent and the doors glide like new now. The charge was VERY reasonable considering the work involved (taking very heavy 8 foot doors down and planing the bottoms). They seem to be very busy which is a good sign. I contacted the Home Doctors because I needed to finish fixing up a rental unit in San Francisco. I had purchased 2 new windows that needed installing, some electrical wiring, recessing a medicine cabinet, dry rot repair, fitting a back door, etc. I thought Tapley was very personable, and I felt like his customer service was fine in the beginning. I felt the bid was on the high side, but I just needed to get the apartment finished so I signed. The contractor/carpenter was a nice enough fellow, although he did tell me he didn't like to work very hard. Yikes! He also wasn't familiar with old San Francisco electrical issues (ie: nob and tube) and had to call in backup, fine. He lost our set of keys and criticized the work of the guy that did the sheet rock. Larry, the sheet rocker was excellent by the way! And the other guys work was OK, but not great. My dad actually fixed some of his electrical work in one of the closets... When the first bill arrived I was charged extra for all kinds of things, including rebuilding the window frames which I thought we had covered. Fine, I let that go. Then the final invoice came and I had been charged an extra $1350 for all kinds of things, but the extras were not itemized. After some email discussion, some of the charges were warranted, but the one that really upset me was an extra charge for installing a new door that the carpenter persuaded me to buy because he told me a new door was going to actually save me money because he would spend less time to fit in a new door than trying to fix the existing door. Upon his recommendation, I spent $300 and a few hours of my time getting the door, and was then charged extra for it because "it was out of the scope of the contract". When I contacted Tapley about it he said the carpenter misspoke, but that was about it. And that he hoped we were still "OK." Sorry but we are not OK. I feel lied to. Beware using the Home Doctors. Update: After some back and forth, Tapley and I split the cost of the overages. He called this solution "more than fair," and it certainly resolves the issue on the whole, however I am still not happy with receiving unitemized invoices with a lot of extra charges.... And he asked me to revise this posting which is pretty cheeky if you ask me! read more

These guys are the real deal, extremely knowledgeable, experienced and highly efficient. I had a broken latch on an outside door. A pretty good handy man could do nothing and then a locksmith spent over an hour and failed to repair it. I was already down nearly $200 with the problem still unsolved. I called Home Doctor, sent a digital image to Craig and he suggested some options. I bought a new lock for $20 and Michael came out; immediately saw what the problem was; re-aligned the door, installed the lock and was done in less than an hour. He arrived at the scheduled time, answered all my questions and found things I didn't know were wrong. When they were done, the door was better than before the lock broke, the price was less than what the locksmith had charged. read more

Do not contact the home doctors for handyman services I contacted them April 10th to fix a shower knob and as of May 13th they still hadn't properly fix the knob or communicated with me that they hadn't done anything to find a proper fitting knob. my tenants have been very patient and after the last attempt to get the job done I spoke with Tapley whom I had been in contact with since April 10th & he assured me that he would have the part by Friday no later than Monday and on Tuesday my tenant contacted me saying he did not call or come out to the house to fix the problem when I contacted Tapley he told me that he had not yet gone to look for the knob after having the job for one month and going out to the house twice just look at the part in the wall and even then he contacted me because he wanted to go back and take a picture of the wall part on a third visit because he said he needed to see the part again before he went to pace to find a proper fitting knob he was stalling because he had done nothing to get the part He then told me that his office person quit and went to work for another company and left them short and so he was having to do office work however every time I would call the office Tapley was in the office and took my call yet seemingly didn't ever leave the office to go do the work. Not only did Tapley not do the work he did not communicate with me that he didn't have time to go find the part and he even told me he was going to do the job on several different occasions. this was a nightmare experience. My apartment had a mysterious electrical issue in the bathroom. I'm no expert, and after fiddling with the main circuit breaker I had to email my landlord for help. He contacted The Home Doctors. Tapley looked at the situation I described in my email, and told me to look for a circuit breaker button I'd never noticed in a power outlet. Sure enough, problem solved.
