When we first approached Tangerine, they were quite friendly over the phone. But when we expressed interest in visiting, their appointment schedule was really wonky and immediately gave off the impression that no one was actually there very often. But we ignored that huge red flag. Almost a week later, we finally got to visit and committed to some pieces. Everything seemed set. Then, three days before the shoot, they became completely silent. Nothing. Zilch. As if the whole company had disappeared. Meanwhile, we had movers lined up and a production schedule to keep. We called, emailed, and even showed up at the door. No one picked up. No one was at the business. In the end, IKEA saved the day and frankly gave us way better service than this place. In my 20 years of working, I have never experienced a place this nonchalant towards working. We gave them the benefit of the doubt until the very end. But when it was less than 12 hours before the shoot, we finally sent them one last email saying we had no choice but to cancel. And guess what? They responded. No apology. No explanation. She spent close to an hour with me on the phone and provided a rough idea of budget as well as ideas to make the job more cost effective. Following that, I spent several months and considerable time meeting with several other designers/builders in my area. As a result, my decision to work with MSK is based as follows: 1. They spent the most time and effort upfront to provide a realistic estimate and made every effort to include costs that others overlooked (i.e. asbestos abatement). 2. They were very clear about the process and scheduling for the job. The utilize an application that is transparent for both the client and themselves. It was very clear to me that responsibilities were well defined in their company. 3. They took the time to explain the details of the job to me. Prior to signing design contract, they were available to answer any questions or concerns I brought up. 4. Specific personnel would be assigned to my job. It would not vary throughout the duration. 5. The fact that they design AND build (from their own design) was appealing because that would minimize any discrepancies between a separate design company and a separate build company. Linda was my designer. Although she is now retired, she has many years of experience in design. She did an outstanding job in the new layout of my kitchen. In additions, she made other helpful suggestions of things that I was not aware of or had overlooked. To help me select materials, she assisted in every step with flooring, plumbing fixtures, tile, counter tops, etc. She made appointments with their vetted venders and we would go together to make the selections. Linda had a clear understanding of my preferences and guided me towards making sound decisions. I was very pleased with the trades people who performed the work. Joe was the lead carpenter. He was meticulous and took great pride in his work. He did an excellent job of installing the new cabinets, casing work and trim details. Shawn was the painter assigned to my project, and again, his expertise and experience was evident in the finished project. Jorge was the plumber for the job and like the others, his work efforts were appreciated and his abilities added to the job success. These individual's main concern was to do a job I was pleased with and I never felt their extra efforts or time spent were a burden to them. Like their vendors, MSK have several years of working with the subcontractors used for the tile work, electrical, counter tops and sheetrock. They were all professional, timely and courteous. Communication throughout he project was outstanding. Curt was my Project Manager. Any e-mails, text messages, concerns, etc. were addressed and answered promptly. The work areas were always clean at the end of the day and construction debris was removed promptly. The project came in on schedule and on budget. MSK did exactly what they said they would do. The house was well-maintained, but the noise factor was bad. Her design was great, and the house sold pretty quickly. I prepared to sell another home this year. Unfortunately, our plans for the sale changed. However, one thing she did for us for that home was recommend a lighter wall color. We got in touch, I told her the paint color by name, and knowing that the house has poor natural sunlight, she said to go with a lighter color. Well, what a difference she made! She saved the day, since the painter was days from putting up the darker color! I can't emphasize enough how Kim's experience and expertise is invaluable. I almost hired a "budget stager." Douglah review After…read moreliving in our house for over 25 years, we decided to redo our kitchen - appliances, cabinets, floors, countertops, lighting, etc. We also wanted to update our laundry room and hallway bathroom. We were looking for a business that would handle everything from design to installation. We met with Leila Douglah and her staff in their showroom in Lafayette. Fast forward 2 years, and we now have a wonderful kitchen, laundry room and bathroom, and except for the purchase of the major appliances (refrigerator, ovens and cooktop), we never had to work with anyone else. We are very happy with the results, and while there were some snags in the construction process (that may or may not have been partly Douglah's fault), the entire process went professionally and smoothly. Douglah Designs is an all-in-one design/construction service. As you might expect, the total cost of the kitchen remodel was probably higher than if we did more of the legwork ourselves and used multiple vendors. But there are certainly advantages to offset the increased expense. The project was seamless and professional. Many of the craftsmen that Douglah Design uses are employees, not contracted. There is no finger pointing between designers and contractors; they all work together to use make things work. To us, the extra expense was definitely worth it. My wife and I are pretty picky when it comes to design, and Leila and her staff were very patient with us. We did have a similar esthetic, so we were usually on the same page from the start. Leila and Rachel Steely had a level of experience and industry knowledge that was a great advantage. Watching them work on the design and materials selection was very impressive and gave us high confidence that they REALLY knew what they were doing. As we realized, designing a kitchen is actually quite a complicated process, with thousands of details that we would not have even known about, let alone been able to address. But the designs and plans handled every detail and issue beautifully. Douglah recommended vendors and products with which they had experience and confidence, which saved us the trouble of having to vet each product, and which gave us confidence in the products. One limitation of working with Douglah Designs is that you are somewhat limited to products and vendors with which they are familiar and confident, so that may constrain your choices (and which may increase the cost of the project). But we felt that limited choices and extra cost were outweighed by the dependability and quality of the products that Douglah recommended. Overall, we were very happy working with Douglah Designs. They are not for everyone - if you have a different esthetic, or a different budget, or want more control over the process, you probably would be happier elsewhere. But if you want a top notch design and installation and have the budget, we highly recommend Douglah Designs.
