Enjoying The Hive's Tasting Room! So many options for tastings and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable!

The service at The Hive Winery is unparalleled! We booked a tasting for our group of 10 and Dena and Michael made it an absolutely wonderful experience. They were super knowledgeable and SO kind. We were able to choose from wines, meads, ciders, and spirits and everything we tried was unique and delicious. We would highly recommend trying out a tasting and purchasing the Lemonator! It was our favorite drink of the day and we bought enough to enjoy all weekend! Thank you The Hive Winery for making our trip to Salt Lake all the more special!

    Tasting room is nothing fancy.

As wine lovers, as soon as we heard about The Hive Winery we knew we had to check it out. It is one of just nine wineries that operate in the mostly dry state of Utah. My visit here was unusual to say the least. The winery is located in a tucked away industrial type shopping center. It's not fancy and is a small little warehouse type room. There's a gift shop that sells local honey and other junky stuff, and the tasting room is a small counter. We were gruffly greeted by a rude woman who, during our entire visit, seemed annoyed that we were there. She obviously didn't want to be working or hosting a wine tasting, and she soured the whole experience. The wines, which were all, in my opinion, totally undrinkable, took care of the rest. The Hive specializes in non-grape fruit wines, honey wine (Mead), and hard apple ciders. We sampled them all for a $5 per person tasting fee of 5 tiny samples each. By the time I got to the second sample, I was ready to tap out. These wines were AWFUL -- not an acquired taste, not "different," but downright AWFUL. I pity the consumer who drinks these wines and actually finds them tasty. I am not trying to sound like the admitted wine snob that I am, but wow. Some of the wines were sickly sweet and most tasted like cough medicine. Among the stomach-churning varietals were black currant wine, dry oaked peach wine, cranberry wine, raspberry pineapple wine, blueberry wine, strawberry wine, and the particularly revolting rhubarb wine (one that I wouldn't even serve to my gravest enemy). Even more insulting than the hateful woman working the tasting bar were the prices of the wines, which ranged from $15 - $25 per bottle. You can buy a decent Cabernet from a real wine growing region like Lodi or Sonoma for that price point. I wanted to support a cool local business but just because it's local doesn't mean it's good. This place gets a big, resounding "bleh."

"There's a minor in the room!" That's the alarm requiring Jay to pull a curtain across the tasting area, so the minor could not see people tasting. It is OK for them to be in the liquor sales area. Yea, Utah. It was cool because I got to take pictures of the curtain. It certainly shares the view of many that don't feel emboldened to say it out loud. The tasting of 5 items is $5. He'd like to be free, but State law requires the charge. It's worth every penny. Nobody is doing a better job with so many interesting products. While the Stinger Hard Cider is the bread and butter, Jay fulfills his technical desires making all sorts of fruit products ranging from dry Brandy and Eau de vie to fortified wine and fruit liqueurs. (Lickers with pictures of his dogs, and perhaps friends) There is always something interesting. Jay is a friendly great guy. If you get a tour from him, it's a treat.

I love this place and have been a customer for years! They have great tastings to sample the newest releases, fun to take Friends/family who are visiting. I love the variety of unique selections that are made local. The staff and owners are so passionate about their craft - it shows when they educate about their products. My favorite is the hive-arita (margarita mix with alcohol already in it) is a ready to serve pouch, the stingers (I like the large bottles!), and the wine of course- always new kinds to try!

I can't wait to go bk!! I would be here everyday if I lived here. They have everything: wine, cider, brandy, liqueur, mead and it's all good. The best thing too is if you are traveling or doing a picnic or something they can decant it into a traveling pouch. Everyone there was really nice. They even had a great recommendation for dinner. I wish I could had sampled more of everything but the stupid law.. law

This cute little place only has 1 tasting area and 1 person serving the samples. Coming in with a group of 6, I was hoping there would be a private room. There was the employee office and the "brewing room." Obviously, nothing like the vineyards or the machines in wine country, but it was cute. Audre was our knowledgeable host for the half hour and she did great! The hive winery offers 5 free tastings of several different fruit and honey wines (mead). I never tried fruit wines other than the regular grapes so I knew this was going to be an adventure! I tried the ghost town which is the white wine and it has the oak smell to it just swirling it in my glass. The smell kinda threw me off so I couldn't taste it. After 3 sips, the oak smell was still there do I knew that wasn't for me. I also tried the pioneer red, liquid peach, and the sister wives Bing cherry. All were pretty sweet and can pass for a rosé or dessert wine. My favorite of the 3 was the sister wives but everyone in my party had a sour look in their face lol. So you may not want to believe me lol. I ended up getting a bottle for $19.99. The peach cobbler that I sampled from my friend tasted just like peach cobbler. Whoa. Mind blown. If it wasn't too sweet, like a dessert wine, I'd pick one up. The blackberry hard cider is soooo good! It's not bottled like wine, but rather like a beer with a hard cap. I'll have no problem drinking it in one sitting and yes, I'll still pour it in a wine glass If you plan on going camping, the winery can decant your bottled wine into a plastic bag with a spout, for an additional fee of course. I would come back here and have my family do a free flight with me. I wish they had more tasting rooms in Salt Lake City so the drive back wouldn't be as far.

Cheers to the Hive Winery in Layton, UT.

Are you willing to spend $65 for a cheap glass of wine? They also only have five cocktails on the menu and you can't order anything else with liquor (I asked for a hot toddy cuz I'm freezing and they said no can do). The singer was good and the ambiance is nice; not very crowded. But overall, I would never pay $65/glass for mediocre wine unless I'm at an ultra luxury resort (which this is not).

We spent most of the time in the van and when we did stop at the locations, we weren't able to go inside to tour any of them or even use a bathroom at them, we just stood in the driveways to learn about them. I admire her passion for teaching, but we cannot for the life of us figure out how our $3000 was spent. The wine was limited to an ounce every time, and whenever we asked for a second "glass" the lady pouring would say "well we want to make sure everyone gets some!" - the "snacks" were two tiny pieces of cheese inside of a ziplock baggie and there is no place to use any restroom throughout the course of the entire tour... mainly because the tour takes place only in a van and standing in driveways. For $3000, a nice suggestion would've been a charcuterie spread INSIDE of one of the locations with some tastings and every person at that price should at the very least have been able to go home with a bottle of wine from the tour. I give her credit for starting up a creative business in an extremely competitive tourist city, but I can't in good faith allow anyone else to pay so much money to go into this expecting a luxury experience, and end up getting yelled at by a bus driver and having to sneak around an old hospital just to pee. I really liked her as a person and hope she can take this advice and use it to work on creating a better experience for all.
