We have always had a wonderful meal at Alpine! We are Westcliffe residents & it is definitely our go to restaurant for a special meal or to bring out of town guests for a delicious meal. We always enjoy the drink special, that they usually use some fresh fruit. Anything they cook with Elk is always our favorite! With family salad, delicious soup & yummy warm sweet bread, you leave satisfied & full!! The views are amazing. We love the local servers, but just like everywhere right now, you need to have some patience & just enjoy the view & your meal! read more

We've gone up to Alpine Lodge twice. Once was six months ago. We recall it being a fine experience and we loved the French onion soup enough to want to come back for it. This time we walked in and asked to sit at the bar. The staff didn't know if they could help us so we sat at the empty bar fifteen minutes until we heard them whispering to each other about take out. We asked the staff if we should get a table instead and they told us in rude tone they could not seat us but we could order take out, and told us no service. We said no thanks and drove back to town and got regular friendly service somewhere else. We are confused and don't understand why they treat patrons this way, never seen it before. All we wanted was a bowl or two of the soup and a glass of wine, how is this not a win win? We are unlikely to drive up the mountain again to roll the dice with this place. read more

I'm not sure what is happening here, because they used to be pretty good, but last night was a disaster. We had a large party, made reservations and showed up a little early. We decided to sit in the bar to wait. We sat there for 20 minutes and had no one approach us, not for drinks, not to tell us the status of our table, nothing. Once we were seated, we waited another 20 minutes before a server ever came to our table. Our food did come out fairly quickly but none of us finished our meals because only one of us actually enjoyed theirs. The shrimp was just frozen shrimp that was fried, salmon was tasteless, green beans had little or no flavor, and my ribeye was so tough I only ate a few bites before giving up. Best view ever! (And hospitality to match.) Alpine Lodge is a collection of five cabins and a restaurant situated just below Alvarado Campground in the Sangre de Cristo range. This review is just of the lodging (cabins) but the restaurant looked like a pretty solid bet (but might be a little too pricey for many, with main courses from $15 to about $30.) The cabins are rather basic, sporting two bedrooms, a kitchen/living room, and a bathroom. There seem to be two floor plans: one with bigger bedrooms and a full bath, but a very small, kitchen; and one with smaller bedrooms, a 3/4 bath, and a much larger kitchen/living room. I recommend the former (cabin 3, for example) if you're visiting with more than three people. Each cabin sleeps up to six (two double beds and a pull-out sleeper) but six would be rather tight. The cabins are also fully equipped with kitchen supplies and some appliances. (Watch out for the coffee maker in cabin 3, though, -- it doesn't turn off unless you unplug it, and may be possessed.) Just kidding about the possession, but not about the not-turning-off thing. The view is spectacular, and stretches over the whole Wet Mountain Valley -- easily one of the two or three best motel views I've ever experienced. There are several good hiking trails within a quarter mile of the site, ranging from easy to moderate in difficulty. Hikers can reach the Rainbow trail, Comanche trail, Venerable trail, and Cottonwood trail from Alpine lodge with no difficulty. And I have nothing but good things to say about the owner/operators. This is definitely a mom and pop operation, and the personality/attention to detail show. We visited mid-week, and when the operators saw our party of five, they let us have an additional cabin for free. He actually said the cabin had been paid for by an out-of-town client who had recently canceled, but I think he just wanted us to be more comfortable. We'll be back. read more

We had an excellent experience at the historic Alpine Lodge in Westcliff, Co. With reservations we were seated immediately upon arrival. Tables were spaced in accordance with Covid rules and hand sanitizer was provided on each table. Our server greeted us within a minute of being seated to get our drink order. The service was incredible. The timing of food to our table was perfect, not too fast and not slow. Warm , pretzel shaped bread was served immediately and it was yummy! I had to stop myself, I could have stuffed the whole thing down it was so good. The potato soup was delicious and salad was crisp and fresh. My husband's meal was ribs and mine the 6 ounce filet. We shared our sides of mashed potatoes and sweet potato wedges. We both really loved the sweet potatoes, both side dishes are really good. Dinners also include fresh veggies. We were too full for dessert but watched it delivered to nearby tables and it looked amazing. The overall experience was perfect. People in Westcliff are very nice and friendliness did not disappoint at The Historic Alpine Lodge. We will go back every time we stay in the beautiful town of Westcliff. read more

Enthusiastic five stars! We went last night. The servers were very friendly, professional, and accommodating and made us so welcome. We arrived before the rest of our group and were promptly taken care of. The atmosphere was upscale mountain comfortable (if I can create a style name here), and the music was lovely -- classic and just the right volume. I loved having a soup and salad bar. It was compact and had my favorite options. Pickled beets too! Husband had the 10 ounce ribeye, cooked perfectly, with baked potato and green beans. I had the alpine fried chicken, garlic cheese mashed potatoes, and green beans. Superb on both counts. The green beans were bright green and perfectly cooked -- how often do you get green beans and wish for even more? You would here. The fried chicken was four large piece, some of the juiciest I've had. Their wine list is limited but they had overall perhaps 10 offerings, which is sufficient especially when you consider the restaurant's remote location. The restaurant has a very nice setup for large groups. We will be back! read more

We all liked what we ordered the waitress was knowledgeable and you won't go away hungry you get two side plus soup and salad bar included in your meal price. This is my absolute favorite place to eat in the Westcliffe area! We just ate here with a group of 11 adults and the service was outstanding. First of all, we ending up changing the reservation 3 times and they were very understanding and accommodating. The menu is fairly simple but everything on it is amazing! I had the baby back ribs and I can honestly say they were the absolute best ribs I've ever had in my life!!! The meat just falls right off the bones...and these ribs have meat...lots of it! The homemade sauce they smother the ribs with is second to none! Others in the party who ordered the ribs echoed my sentiments. Everyone was completely satisfied with their meals...we will definitely be back many more times! read more

This review is for the cabins only. I did not eat at the restaurant, although I heard it was very nice and had great food. There are 5 cabins, which are 2 bedrooms. We stayed in cabin 4, and we also saw the inside of cabin 5. The cabins were very clean and neat. They had just about everything we needed, a fully equipped kitchen (small microwave, small range/oven, coffee maker, toaster, dishes, silverware, glasses, mugs, even wine glasses!), full size refrigerator, towels and toiletries, and two queen sized GREAT COMFY beds! There were also extras of things needed (such as trash bags, paper towels, and light bulbs, even, which we ironically needed when the bulb burned out in the bathroom). There was a small table and 4 chairs, a sofa bed (not as comfy as the regular beds) and two chairs out on the little deck area. The view from cabin 4 was great, I think probably the best of all of the cabins, in my personal opinion. It was quiet there and peaceful. There was some traffic from the restaurant but not a lot (and not bothersome). I really enjoyed sitting out on the deck area. (It would have been great if it also had a small table. We ate lunch outside but there was no table, so we just made due. No big deal for us adults, but more challenging with young kids.) Our cabin could have easily slept 6 people, with two in each bed. The only downside was that there was no electrical outlets in the bedrooms. That was a problem with dealing with a CPAP machine. Next time, we'd bring an extension cord, I suppose. Cabin 4 was a tight fit in the bedrooms, but we were able to move the bed over just enough to fit a pack-n-play into the room, next to the bed. The bathroom was very small - small enough that you could actually reach the sink while you were sitting on the toilet, but we did not have any problems. Cabin 5 had a larger bathroom than ours (and one bedroom had a small chest of drawers), but it appeared slightly more difficult to maneuver if there are any accessibility concerns. (There were also a lot more stairs to reach cabin 5 compared to some of the other cabins.) Also, the cabinets in cabin 5 were a little different, with no cabinet up high, where the dishes are typically kept. Everything was kept in lower cabinets. Cabin 5 did have outlets in the bedrooms, but the pull-out sofa could not pull out into a bed. There was not enough room for it to completely be pulled out due to the cabinets being in the way by maybe 6 inches or so. The sofa was too heavy to move, so not sure if it was turned sideways, if the bed could have been accessed. Therefore, it would be tough to sleep 6 people in cabin 5. Perhaps that is just a temporary issue with the cabinets that is going to change in the future and that issue will be resolved. Just in case you are wondering, there are no campfires allowed at these cabins. In other places I've visited in other areas of the state, I've stayed in cabins that were more like camping (with just a minimal bed, a table, chairs and electricity). I would say that this is more like having a hotel room, but it's still a basic cabin. The price was a little high for compared to I was looking for, but overall we were pleased with our experience there and if we needed a place to stay, would not hesitate to stay here again. Also, it should be noted that the staff was great! Very friendly. We did not have any problems during our stay that required us to contact the staff, but I'm sure they would have been helpful with whatever was needed. read more

I love this place. I owe a cabin close by and find time every year to drop by and enjoy the atmosphere and company.

This past weekend I enjoyed the most wonderful dining experience! And, while Saturday night has lingered pleasantly in my mind for a couple of days, I wanted to take the time to really try and pinpoint the element of my experience which made it so unforgettable. And then my dinner date nailed it: hospitality. Yes! That is exactly what places the Historic Alpine Lodge above all of the rest. Hospitality. "The friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers." Of course. The Alpine Lodge exudes hospitality in a comfortable, intuitive way. From the minute we called ahead for a reservation and directions to the Lodge (which sits at the base of a beautiful mountain on the outskirts of Westcliffe, CO off of County Road 140) until the time we said our goodbyes, we were treated warmly, generously, and, well, outright neighborly. Kendra seated us and waited on us throughout the evening. It was busy on this particular night and yet Kendra maintained an amazing degree of calm and openness as she answered our touristy questions about the history of the Lodge and quizzed her about what venison and elk taste like. And she wasn't just calm. Kendra was kind and proud. We discovered during our meal that she is the owner-chef's daughter and had been working at the Lodge for 5 years. Kendra, smiling, ran down the list of relatives who cared about and worked for her father at the Inn. Each person she named played a part in putting an absolutely delicious and plentiful meal before us - from cutting the meats to making the warm, braided honey bread. Ack! It makes my mouth water just remembering it all. Kendra told us about how her father had recently realized that many members of his local clientele were aging with the business and, to help them access the main dining room (which used to sit 16 feet above the lower level), he raised the lower level up so that his clientele would not have to climb so many stair steps. He also installed a ramp to make the Inn wheelchair-accessible. Our meal was so very good. We selected the venison and elk entrees which came with a baked potato, garlic cheesy mashed potatoes, a salad and soup bar (the soup was excellent), the braided honey bread previously mentioned, and a side of broccoli. The merlot we were served complimented our meals perfectly. Several generous gestures were extended to us during our meal but I will keep those a secret and just simply say, "Thank you, Kendra and team! Your hospitality is appreciated and treasured." I think next time will have to include a stay in one of the Lodge's little cabins. They looked incredibly inviting and cozy in the moonlight Saturday night and, if the lodging experience is anything like our dining experience, it will be our pleasure to return year after year. read more

Sunday brunch is a must if you like comfort food, great service (Rick's fabulous!), and just the right number of items (think: quality over quantity). Arrive plenty hungry because you'll want seconds. Maybe thirds. Fresh, homemade biscuits with gravy or jam (assume "homemade" unless otherwise indicated); scrambled eggs with potatoes, cheese and bacon; and OMG the fried chicken!! You simply must have the fried chicken: quality bird wrapped in crunchy, perfectly seasoned batter that leaves only trace amounts of grease on the fingers. Went for the amazing lasagna in round 2 with the vegetable medley (a guilt selection driven by the mass quantities of aforementioned comfort food) and ended with apple crisp a la mode. Don't be fooled when you pull up - the place doesn't look like much, but the food and the views won't disappoint. Chef, if you get sick of the cold, please come hang your shingle in North Carolina! read more

Have been to the restaurant several times. The atmosphere is rustic but very elegant with lovely music playing in the background at just the right volume. The view out the very large window is spectacular with sweeping viewsof the Wet mountain valley. The food is very good. It is a bit pricey but one can always have just the soup and salad bar at a very reasonable price. If I remember correctly it was about $8. The soup is excellent. The service is outstanding. The staff is very professional and at the same time very friendly. I live in Canon City and when I want to go for a drive in the mountains it is the perfect destination.
