I called to see if there were vacancies and left an pessimistic message, so was surprised when the proprietor returned my call minutes later and confirmed rooms were available at $65/n+ tax. Having spent the afternoon trying to find lodging at any reasonable price in the middle of hunting season in Colorado's backcountry, I gave in knowing the price was inflated beyond reason. The room had no less than SEVEN (7) notes stuck to lamps, curtains, bathroom walls, kitchen walls, bedroom walls, and tv explaining aside variety' quirks. I almost found the amusement value worth the 100% seasonal up charge! Gaining an extra star was the simply wonderful addition of two extension cords it the room. I've stayed in many a fancier hotel that did not have the brains to use these in rooms to make plugs accessible! read more

This place surpassed my expectations. There were two beds in my room, but they were in separate rooms, which was super cool! It was like having a living room and a bedroom! There was a TV in both rooms, as well as ceiling fans. A microwave, fridge/freezer, desk fan, and dresser. The place was perfectly clean, with cool arched doorways. I knew that I would be driving 12 hours to pick up the husband and his Colorado Trail partner and ferry cars. We would have dinner in Saquache and then have 4 more hours of drive time on 285 in the dark. I also knew I would not be a happy camper after all that driving and decided that we needed a break and anything with a flushing toilet would do. I called Loraine at the Big Valley (used to be Hillside Motel) to make reservations, I could tell it would not be a rat hole by her friendly attitude. The Big Valley motor court has been in the family since it was built in 1954. Loraine and Ken took it over in 2000 and just like her parents built each set of rooms until there were nine, they are remodeling interior and exterior, from plumbing to trim until the whole building has been completely remodeled. Our room #6 had two queen beds with brand new mattresses and each bed had its own room (I think this would be a plus for parents traveling with kids). Everything was in great working order and clean as a whistle. We opened the windows to let the cool San Luis valley breeze naturally cool the room. I highly recommend this small motel if you are visiting the San Luis Valley or if you get stuck in a storm. It is only 30 minutes from the Great Sand Dunes and Saguache would be a fun place to make as base. Nothing fancy but neither are the prices. read more

The price was great, the service amazing and the place simply charming. Full range of channels for TV, full (though small) kitchen, a ceiling fan, AND they left a table fan in room for me! My room was very cabin (ish) which fit the area very well. Reason for only 4 stars: Only shower, no tub and one bed was really close to kitchen door, making it a snug fit to walk around. If you are are going to Saguache, your only choice of accommodation is the Big Valley Motel. Fortunately, it's a great choice. The Big Valley Motel harkens back to the motor courts of the '50's and '60's. Not fancy but clean and comfortable. I spent 5 nights there and my room was unfailingly spotless every day. The rooms have been recently remodeled. At $48 a night it's a real value. read more

This motel is priced great (less than $80 a night for two queens with a divider wall) and the owner, Lorraine, was very nice. The room was clean and quiet. It is down the street from a restaurant. My only complaint was that the TV was grainy and didn't get many channels. read more

The owner was very friendly and went out of her way to set us up with a room, as we were traveling in late. This is a good place for a quick night's rest, but I would not recommend staying here for longer than 8 hours. The bed / comforter: no telling what might have been on it. I slept with another sheet over this. The room smelled of a retirement home, in some ways that is good--brings back nostalgia, but not so great when laying down to bed. The lack of air circulation in the room needs attention. They do provide a fan, but it is not up to par to handle proper air flow. Good luck taking a shower in the small space provided. Again, great for a quick place to lay your head, but I think next time I'll just drive straight through to my destination. read more

This motel has been run by the same family since 1954, and the current owner, Loraine, makes sure that all is well with her guests. I was working in the Saguache area for almost 4 weeks, and Big Valley was home away from home. Clean rooms, the most comfortable motel bed I've ever slept in, and if you ask really nicely, the opportunity to do laundry :). I would definitely recommend Big Valley if you are in the Saguache area. read more

we stay at Lorraine's place almost every time we visit the valley. The price is great for very clean rooms with a country flair. Lorraine is always helpful and the atmosphere is very laid back. The oasis restaurant is just a block away with great Mexican food. read more

Sometimes you happen upon a place that makes such an impression on you that you have to take time to let people know about it. Big valley Motel is such a place. I was travelling through Colorado on my way to the Grand Canyon and I stopped to ask for direction because my GPS on my phone was giving me different paths to take. When I stopped at the Big Valley Motel I met a man named Ken Williams who I have to say spoke to me in a way that made me feel like an old friend. He gave me some advice that I should take my time when making my path through the Wolf Creek Pass because according to him the beauty there was far beyond what i would see at the canyon. I was in a hurry to get down the road and was not ready to stop for the night so we went a bit further down the road, but his advice kept coming back to me to slow down and enjoy the view. I must say that the scenery I saw the next morning was some of the most breath taking scenery I have ever seen in my entire life. I am so glad I stopped to talk to him and that I took his advice. I will be going back to this area on another vacation Lord willing and when I do I plan on staying at the Big Valley Motel. read more
