We stopped in at Herons Landing on Sunday late afternoon/ early evening and sat out on the patio- dog friendly. Great day to sit back and have some of their specials. Good selection of tap beers. Tried the Duck poppers and Cheese curds. Waiter said they were mad fresh. We also had the Dam Burger, Duck PoppersHerons Landing Grilled Chicken Sandwich- all delicious. Waiter was cordial and friendly. He was only one working that evening. Unfortunately he forgot to bring water and then drinks. Needed to be less chatty and more Efficient getting orders in. We ate here earlier this year on a trip to sight-see around Fort Atkinson. And it was a pleasant enough experience. The food was ample and tasted pretty good. And there was a pretty decent weekend evening crowd. We stopped by THL again last weekend on another drive around our beautiful Wisconsin farm country. And it was like a different place. On a Saturday evening, we were the only diners when we started, and all alone when we finished. "Denise" seemed to try as our server. But every step of the process was like pulling teeth. And again, that was with us as the only customers. Our food took forever to arrive, then it was all about puny portions, on smallish plates. And it tasted about as good as school cafeteria fare. There don't seem to be many dining options out in this countryside to begin with. I guess next time we'll just bring our own food. read more

Solid place to eat in Jefferson. On river with nice view. Pedestrian bridge leads across river to a park and the rest of town. I had chicken sammy with bacon, avocado and hot sauce. Very tasty. Wifey had burger with jam bacon. Also tasty. We both had the split pea soup. Also tasty. Split bacon wrapped kielbasa with friends. Can't go wrong with pig n pig. Very tasty. The Herons Landing is a casual, spacious restaurant that has a variety of items on their menu from burgers, to pizza, to filet mignon. I came with a group of family members for Sunday dinner and we started the evening off with the best cheese curds I've ever had. I believe the cheese curds were beer battered. The crust was soft, yet slightly crispy and the cheddar type cheese was really good. For dinner, I ordered the Herons Landing Grilled Chicken Sandwich with Sweet Potato Fries. The chicken sandwich was good, but I felt the pretzel bun was way too thick for the chicken. However, I did enjoy the sandwich, as it was typical but decent. The Sweet Potato Fries were great...not too soft and not too crispy. The service was a little slow, but this is a very laid back restaurant so don't come with high expectations. After attending my boyfriend's nephew's birthday party in Jefferson, we decided to grab a late lunch/early dinner since hot dogs & sloppy joes just weren't speaking to us at the party. My boyfriend had been wanting to try The Heron's Landing so off we went. It's a beautiful riverside space with lots of big windows, rustic decor, and clean facilities. Due to the odd time (mid-afternoon Saturday) there was only one other table so it was pretty quiet. We were told to pick a seat and the bartender came over to take our drink orders. Shortly after a server took our food order and made sure we had been helped with beverages. Our orders were quick to arrive - a bonus of the empty restaurant. I went for The "Heron Chicken" Sandwich (no idea why it's in quotes) - a hand-breaded fried chicken breast, bacon, avocado, garlic aioli, and cheese (I subbed cheddar in place of Swiss) on a pretzel bun. I also upgraded to the sweet potato fries. My boyfriend opted for the The "Blue Heron" Burger (again, the weird, unnecessary quotes) which had bleu cheese and bacon plus their regular fries (the Brew City brand). My fries were great, plank cut and cooked through properly, something that doesn't always happen with sweet potato fries. My sandwich was a bit overcooked and chewy, but I honestly don't mind it that way. The combination of flavors was good, but I could have done with a little less aioli - I'm not a fan of globs of mayo. The biggest thing was everything could have used a little seasoning. I can count on one hand the number of times per year I add salt to my food (aka basically never) so if I think something needs salt, it probably realllly needs salt. My boyfriend enjoyed his dish and the total for two meals and a beer was around $25 - not too bad. I'd return if we were in the area, and look forward to checking out their menu of blended ice cream drinks. Avoid. Overpriced. Made me ill. I was traveling through the area and thought this would be a fun place to have a fish fry. Take-out service was prompt but once the bartender got my money he ignored me -fair enough, I know people lounging at the bar will get him more tips. The price was extremely inflated! I should have known better as there is a sign at the door saying all prices were increased 8% due to inflation. Food portions were abysmal, but that was probably a good thing because within an hour my body didn't want to keep it in any longer. Fantastic!! -but not. At least I got a good story out of it and didn't get any of the extremely unhealthy calories from digesting the food. Do yourself a favor and go to Culver's. read more

IMPORTANT POINT - when your performance is completely inadequate and your customers continually are talking to you to get service of any kind it is NOT recommended to play pretend and act like nothing is wrong and that we didn't have a horrible experience. Is it possible to be in a time warp (distortion of space in relation to time whereby people or objects of one period can be moved to another.) *and* a black hole (a place where people or things, especially money, disappear without trace) simultaneously? If you go to the Heron's Landing you're likely get a little of each. We were in Jefferson for the dog show and were meeting family and friends for dinner on Saturday evening. The Heron's Landing looked like an interesting place and we saw that it was located on the Rock River so it seemed like a lovely location to gather for food and laughter. (At least we got the laughter in... the food over 2 hours once someone actually waited on us which took 1.5 hours.) Reservations were made for 6:30 PM so dog show folks could finish showing and then head to dinner. Our first folks arrived at 6 PM and let the hostess know they were there and would be getting a beverage at the bar. Had they realized this would be their only beverage they may have ordered more than one each. Next folks arrived at 6:10 PM and again let the hostess know we were there and ready to be seated at their convenience. They took us to a table and then all the staff completely ignored us until we asked to join our friends that had a 7 PM reservation in hopes that we might be waited on given their reservation -- that did not happen. You might think the place was packed and busy, but no, there were plenty of open tables, we were invisible along with some other patrons. You know it's bad when you look around the room and other forlorn people hoping to dine nod with recognition that there will be no meals forthcoming. After 1.5 hours with no waiting and looking like fans at a sporting event waving and calling out and getting up repeatedly to talk to the hostess (she was managing the tables and server assignments) we got a server assigned to us. She came to the table and took most of our orders -- she skipped me even with all of us calling out to her, but at least she left me the menu so I could look longingly at it. I had to go and tell the hostess what I wanted and then also tell the server what I wanted... If I had planned to order that way I could have gone to McDonald's. Once the order was in, the service was no better. Empty waters, no opportunity to reorder drinks (is there a 1 beverage maximum for every 3 hours in this restaurant?) Food came past our table and they asked who had it every time and unfortunately it was never us. We did decide that we would take anything that came past in hopes that we would get an opportunity to eat before it was time to get up and show dogs the next morning. Once the food eventually got there it was adequate, nothing more. It may have been better 2.5 hours earlier, but given that everyone was really hungry by the time it arrived I would have thought it would be better. We didn't try dessert because none of us had the time to wait for that! I asked for a manager and the hostess told me she "used to be the manager" I'm not certain that she had the skills needed to manage any part of the house. I asked what they could do to help us given our awful experience and even though you may find this shocking, they did nothing. I've spent years as a Road Warrior and I've seen all kinds of service -- or lack thereof -- and this ranks as one of the worst. When you give a place every opportunity to try and make things right and they opt out it tells you about the people that run the place. As an aside, if you own this joint and you only have a former manager that appears to be unable to navigate their way out of a wet paper sack, you need to be in house. If you are in house and allow this incredibly poor level of performance you should be embarrassed. I keep thinking that this experience could have been better if there was an abusive chef caricature that would have come out and yelled at us -- perhaps like Adam from Northern Exposure... read more

Four years ago when I moved to Jefferson Herons Landing was a family favorite. The last several times I've gone its been eh okay. Last weeks visit was a second choice because we didn't want to drive an hour for a birthday dinner. We should have driven the hour or gone to McDonald's. The menu online and what you're handed is different. They've taken a lot off the menu. The appetizers duck poppers and potato boats were bad. The duck poppers were horrible. Actually tasted bad, as in expired food bad. We all took a bite and the waitress took them all away. The potato boats dispite being loaded with toppings had no flavor. hubs had prime rib sandwich, dry meat which he said also tasted off. My child's $17 marinara and pasta was also spoiled tasting. Other child had a BLT, they even botched that. The bread was bad and she asked for raw onions, they gave her a cooked slice about a half inch long. My sons chicken Alfredo wasn't good either, the chicken also tasted off. The waitress was really slow and there was 11 people there. My family of five, table of two, and a table of four. Never again. The place should close, before someone gets really sick from the food. read more

Have gone here a few times over the years. Not sure what happened but our recent experience was not good. Met girlfriends for lunch. All our meals were overpriced and tasteless and they charge extra for everything....I asked for a lemon in my water....got charged for the lemon!....Ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and asked for mayonnaise to be put on the side since i rarely use it or don't use much. I assume it came with it since who makes a chicken sandwich with just lettuce and tomato dry? Got charged for extra dressing on the side.....?? Extra? Ordered ranch for the fries....got charged for that.....I get the increase in costs and all but don't up the bill when i think the prices were pretty high. The chicken was dry and like a slice of a chicken breast cut thin. Our waitress was very nice but was the only one working the room other than the elderly lady behind the bar that was also the bus boy. One of my friends as we were leaving immediately got sick and we waited for her for over 30 min to feel better. The odd thing is this is the second time she has been there and she got sick the first time also and had to leave the dinner party that night. It could be a nice place again. The Heron's Landing is a nice restaurant/bar in Jefferson. They offer traditional American food such as steaks, salmon, and a few other entrees. They also offer a large selection of sandwiches. All entrees come with soup and salad. I have been to Herons Landing many times and the food is consistently good. I've had a few of the steaks and the salmon. They all have been good. The staff does a good job. Service is always pretty good. The location on the river is ideal offering nice views of the river and Rotary Park. The patio is great on a summer day. They did a lot of work on the building before they remodeled, and they have some great pictures of Jefferson from the past. read more

Went for lunch today. They opened at 11:00 and we (5 of us) arrived at 11:30. The food was fine, tho nothing to write home about. The staff that we saw, our waitress and a bartender/hostess, seemed to be quite inconvenienced by our presence. Perhaps it was the waitresses first day at any job? It was quite a chore to get information from her. The bartender/hostess looked displeased with every table she seated and every request made of her. Will I go back? Probably not. I can't imagine what it would be like if they had more than the four tables and no bar patrons that were there today. read more

The fried cod came out with a nice, brown crust, but it was completely unseasoned, bland and flavorless. It also smelled a bit to "fishy." The potato pancakes had a nice flavor, but were served cold. When I mentioned it to our server, she said she would tell the kitchen staff, but no other remedies were offered. Again, the service was otherwise great. My 2 yr old ate his whole plate of chicken tenders which were lightly coated & cup of fruit. We ate here twice while touring with an old car club. The food both nights was excellent. The service was slow the second night, but the staff explained that two parties of 8 has just preceded us without reservations. With that in mind the wait was reasonable and the staff attentive and polite. Can't comment on the interior other than to say the restrooms were clean. We dined outside both nights on the dog- friendly patio. The landscaping was beautiful, the river view very relaxing. We enjoyed watching the numerous Mallards landing and departing and were glad our dogs weren't with us when the baby bunnies hopped past our table. My husband and I shares a meal each night. We had the salmon salad the first night. A. Very generous portion, perfectly cooked salmon, and fabulous house- made dressing. We arrived 10 minutes early for our 7pm reservation for 7 people. The host stand couldn't find our reservation, but made accommodations and sat us immediately on the deck. Unfortunately the chairs were covered with cobwebs. The server got to our table 15 minutes later and took our drink and appetizer order. About 15 minutes later we had apps and drinks. We then ordered entrees and waited an hour for those to be served. The second half-hour of that period was filled with our inquiries re: our order, various explanations that didn't make much sense, and general frustration. We were informed the order was held up because the kitchen ran out of potato pancakes for four of the orders (no one came to us and asked if there could be a substitution). A wonderful experience for us new-comers! The Friday night fish fry was wonderful, but the real treat was our server, Nick P. He was perfectly attentive and always pleasant. His insights and recommendations were much appreciated, and his uplifting attitude made the experience that much more enjoyable. We will definitely be back! I really wanted to like this place, I really did. We came around 2pm and were the only ones in the place. It took about 10 mins for the waitress to bring our soda and chocolate milk. We got a grilled cheese off the kids meal that was so fat that it wouldn't fit in our 5 year olds mouth. I had to cut the crust and squish it down. My burger was so greasy that it kept dripping with each bite and kept burning me. I am mad that we drove all the way from the outlet malls to try this place off of its good reviews on helps.
