Pastrami (8oz), $17 (^ both of these had about 12 slices, and to be honest, tasted a lot like similar deli slice options from Tofurky, Lightlife, Yves, or Field Roast - all of which are *much* cheaper.) 3. Pepperoni (8oz), $15 (^ the best of what I purchased; it was nice to have a thicker pepperoni option for our vegan charcuterie board that wasn't super thinly slices or fig salami!) 4. Dill Havarti (8oz), $20 5. Brie (10oz), $25 (^ both of these were misses for us; the dill havarti was really soft and had the barest suggestion of dill. It melted well, but it hardened back up quite quickly in our paninis. The brie wasn't anything like what we were expecting: it was completely flavorless and felt/tasted like a brick of extra firm tofu). I have had some delicious items from this place. My biggest grievances are 1) that there are no samples offered (even way before the pandemic). If you want to "try" something you must place a whole order, which sucks because if you don't like it, you end up throwing it away. Now you're wasting food and money. Shame on them for that. 2) no modifications on their sandwiches. Almost all of their sandwich specials come with cheese, which I don't eat (Yes, I know it's vegan. Every Friday during Orthodox Great Lent there is a gathering and a speaker. It was my turn to bring the group a meal. I made a chili with the ribeye and everyone just gobbled it down. This is the only company I know that offers DELICIOUS meat-free meat AND cheese-free cheese. In January 2020, we started phasing out animal protein and dairy from our diet. We did it for a variety of health reasons and taste preference. When covid hit, we had even more reasons to back away from animal protein. We've never eaten so well! So we took a chance and ordered a pack of Herbivorous Butcher pepperjack cheese from an online vegetarian food company. WOW! The cheese had flavor and easily melted - it tasted great! So we went to the Herbivorous Butcher site and quickly ordered brie, garlic pepper havarti and more pepper jack cheese. We love that their cheese and meats are cholesterol-free. Welcome back cheese! We missed you! Soon after we tried their Italian sausage. We weren't dazzled by the supermarket brands and figured if Herbivorous figured out how to make great cheese, maybe they were more than a one hit wonder. After my first bite of their Italian sausage, I was drawn back to my childhood and realized they are the REAL DEAL. This brother and sister team figured out how to make meat-free meat and cheese-free cheese taste delicious. So now I have two Porterhouse steaks in the fridge - my husband actually ordered more cheese and the steaks as we were tasting the sausage. Grilling season is here and we plan on continuing to eat great food. We'll eat the steaks with homegrown purple sweet potatoes and San Marzano tomatoes. After that, we'll raid the garden's sweet peppers and onions and serve them with more of the Italian sausage. I only wish we lived nearby their store so we could pick up one of their delicious-sounding deli sandwiches or visit their soon-to-open Herbie Butcher's Fried Chicken restaurant. I was hoping to be reviewing restaurants in Spain and Portugal this week -- but COVID-19 changed my travel plans and now I'm stuck at home -- and cooking every day -- so we ordered a package of "meat" from the Herbivorous Butcher. So far I've cooked with three of the items we ordered and I'm impressed. The texture and taste of each product (bacon, Korean ribs and pepperoni) were excellent and they are easy to work with. Their meats are proof that you don't need animal products for a tasty and satisfying meal. I used the vegan bacon in my baked beans. The bacon brought a maple smokiness comparable to the best maple smoked bacon I've previously used. I used the vegan Korean ribs in Bao buns. The flavor and mouth feel were identical to the best bao I've eaten at a Michelin Bib Gourmand rated restaurant. (I did need to make and add a bit more sauce for the right amount of sauciness but that was easy with some vegan hoisin, a bit of soy sauce, sesame oil, gochujang and some brown sugar.) I used the vegan pepperoni on my traditional thin crust pizza. The texture and spicy taste were perfect. The biggest difference between I noticed between these vegan meats and animal products is "less fat." For those used to animal fat it might seem like something is missing -- at first bite -- but the intensity of the seasonings more than compensates -- and your heart will eventually thank you for eliminating all that cholesterol -- as will the animals who aren't butchered for our gastronomic pleasure. I'll also add that as good as their "meats" are, their "cheese" needs some work. I found the "Swiss cheese" lacking in sharpness and way too soft. Hopefully they will elevate their cheese to the quality of their "meat" and I'll add the fifth star to my review. I'll be ordering more from the Herbivorous Butcher and looking forward to visiting in person after things return to normal. read more

I would give this place a 0 if I could for their customer service. The cashier made a mistake and was supposed to provide a $1 discount for buying 2 bags of Herbie Butcher's Fried Chicken; in their promotion there was no mention that someone could not mix or match at all. I even asked the cashier if the price of the 2 bags of the Herbie Butcher's Fried Chicken would be $22.99 and they informed me that it would be, however, after I obtained the receipt from the purchase, I was not able to view the total, until after the purchase was made. I complained to another representative who was on his computer. One important point to mention that there was no other customer in the store and I was told I had to wait 10 minutes for a sandwich, an additional product that I purchased. The representative, who I disturbed from being on his computer, smiled and smirked with joy at me and said that I had to buy 2 of the same kind of Herbie Butcher's Fried Chicken and said to me that next time I would know better. This "Fake Meat" Shop is extremely overpriced compared to many of their competitors and the quantities have got smaller and smaller over time, they used to have the product out and now it is all shrink wrapped or already packaged. So this shop was the thing I was most excited about when visiting Minneapolis. Unfortunately, they're only doing online pick up right now and the meats are in 12oz packs that are around $10-15 each. I was hoping to get a little of everything to try, but they don't have any kind of sampler pack you can buy. The Herbivorous Butcher is a landmark in the Twin Cities vegan scene and also a worldwide pioneer, spawning vegan butchers and cheese shops around the world. I feel lucky to live in a city with an awesome place that's simultaneously fun (it looks like an old-school butcher shop!) and also a staple in my monthly food purchases. From their store, you can buy a dozen-plus meats by the pound or get pre-made sandwiches and other meals. They also ship around the country. On a recent visit, I got their hot breakfast sandwich ($12) which is a solid choice: eggy tofu, sausage and cheese. My only gripe is that the bread is too thin and the red pepper spread doesn't add any flavor (but does make the sandwich soggy). The Forager hot panini ($12) was savory with a mixture of roast beef, mushrooms, kale, gouda and mushroom mayo. The bread on this was great: crispy and thick, with a nice array of textures from the meats, cheese and mushrooms. The mushroom mayo didn't add any flavor, but did make the bread soggy, so that's the one drawback. The hot brat with chips ($8) was perfect all-around: a delicious brat (similar to Field Roast, but higher quality and fresher) with fried onions on a bun. Can't go wrong. Lastly, their hot mapo tofu ($11) was a monthly special and was fabulous: savory, spicy and authentic. It might be the best mapo tofu in the Twin Cities and it was a treat to have a version with seitan meat. I only have two gripes about Herbivorous Butcher: they don't allow modifications to sandwiches, which is annoying, because almost all their sandwiches have mayos/spreads/aiolis that add no flavor, but do damage to the texture of the bread. Also, they tend to sell-out quickly of the most popular sandwiches, so you have to order early to ensure your lunch or dinner. If you're a foodie in the Twin Cities, Herbivorous Butcher is a focal point. If you're a visitor, make sure to stop by. read more

Old school delicatessen, always personable staff. I highly recommend the ribs here, but generally any cut they serve is high quality. Great attention to crafting flavor and texture, wide variety of "meats"... just great stuff all around. They also have a shelf of things like marshmallows, honeys, or other snacks and ingredients people often don't think of but can be missed in a vegan life. I always come here when I'm going somewhere I want smores! But the meats are the star and are well made! Do note: almost everything is gluten-based, if that is an issue for you. They do have jackfruit, and the place is always obviously clean, but I'd steer elsewhere if you're celiac. read more

I can't remember exactly what real cheese is like, but the two I got seemed spot on in flavor and texture to real cheese (these are pretty mild flavored). I got an AMAZING breakfast sandwich which was like $13 and filled me up all day. It had gluteny meat, generous eggy tofu chunks, sauteed vegetables, and a sauce. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. The korean ribs were good, but the jerky or the ribs came off kind of sweet to me. I can't remember which one as I kind of tried them both at the same time. Anyway, I love the queso cheese but I didn't use it fast enough so half of it went bad? It became watery looking, and so not having any experience, I threw it away, regretfully. Five stars! I've waited two years to try Herbivorous Butcher and the day finally came where I could try one of their delicious sandwiches. I got the turkey with dill havarti cheese and my mouth is water thinking about it! The cheese and meat tasted spot on that I felt guilty that I enjoyed it's close resemblance to meat and dairy based flavors. The price point was reasonable and it came with chips. I also opted to get a vegan pop tart that melts in your mouth! I'm going here EVERY SINGLE TIME I'm in Minneapolis. Fun fact! OK, so first of all, mad props to the folks who opened and run this place, who seemed to me at least to have really cracked the code on this whole thing. You'd pretty much have to be living under a rock in the Twin Cities to have not noticed that Herbivorous Butcher meats are pretty much the go-to vegan meat of choice on restaurant menus everywhere. It must be good, right? So it was cool to actually go to the source and check i tout. The store is modest and small but well appointed. I loved the decorations, which scream butcher shop -- from the cleaver-shaped door handle on the front door to the actual wall of knives embedded on the side of the store (I pulled one -- they're good and stuck in there). They have a small selection of vegan products for sale and a little merch (Meat-Free hat anyone?). And then there are the big deli cases full of vegan meats and cheeses. It works just like a regular butcher shop -- you belly up and tell the friendly person behind the counter what you want. They wrap up your items in butcher paper and weigh it to slap a price sticker on it. Everyone was friendly, the store was clean. In our crew, the Korean BBQ ribs and the brats were the winners.
