October 4-6, 2024 We came to this Inn as it is owned and operated by my friend and former work colleague Michael Gilligan and his lovely wife Jeanne. It was an easy as well as beautiful drive here from our home. Once we reached Downtown it was a block off the Main Street. Parking was free and located in the rear of the property. Luckily on the Friday evening we arrived we were able to get dinner at Harvey's which is onsite as well. The drinks and dinner was superb. Look for separate review on the Restaurant. After dinner we walked downtown to stretch our legs after being in the car as well as get an after dinner drink. Back at the Henderson as we got ready for bed hubby exclaimed how comfortable the bed was as well as everything about the Henderson. The next morning we went down to breakfast. Note it is included with your stay. We thought continental breakfast but this was a freshly prepared meal. Well I was still full from our dinner so I had some toast and tea. Hubby had the crepes and he loved them. After breakfast we enjoyed just taking in the place and sitting on the rocking chairs on the porch. Later we did leave and checked out the local sites Jump Off Rock with beautiful views and hiking trails. As well as miniature golf across from the high school. We did catch a nice nap before dinner as well as checked out the bees located on the roof on the second floor. Note you can buy the honey to take home with you. After another wonderful meal at Harvey's at the Henderson we were ready for bed. The next day a different menu for breakfast, we were sad to be going. It was a wonderful restful and peaceful stay. We stayed here through FEMA after Hurricane Helene. Michael, Jeannine, and all the people we met at the Henderson Inn were so kind and welcoming. The inn immediately feels warm and inviting, with a cozy fireplace at the entrance and thoughtful nods to classic cinema with Alfred Hitchcock-inspired decor. Hollywood movies constantly played at the bar adding a nostalgic touch. The food we had was excellent and there is tea and refreshments on each floor. The inn is a Historic Building and be prepared that the rooms can be a bit chilly this time of year in the mountains, be sure to pack warm. We're so grateful for the kindness we experienced during such a difficult time and deeply appreciate all the generosity and care we received. Leslyn and I want give a loud-shout out to our hosts, Jeanne and Michael. We had a relaxing two night stay at theIr B & B, the Henderson. It's a B & B, bar and restaurant--a one stop shop! We chose the Henderson for its location. It's just a block off of Main Street in down town Hendersonville, NC, where you can visit a wide variety of shops and restaurants. Of course you wouldn't stay here without reading about it first. Yes it's an old building built around 1919. Though there is mention in the write up about a renovation around 2000, this building retains much of its original roaring 20s charm, such as a large wrap a round porch, a very cozy, well lived in lobby, and slightly slanted bedroom floors! That's the charm, right? And if you are a movie fan, you'll enjoy the Hollywood movie memorabilia, both downstairs and up, as well as observing the bee hives on the second story roof. Back to our hosts. Janine is out going and friendly; Michael a bit more reserved, but I enjoyed talking food with him; Michael is the chef end of the team, and as such does a better than average job of offering delightful small plates for dinner, as well as some wholesome and filling breakfast faire. I've prepared meals at home for over 40 years, and have some formal training in the culinary arts, so I'm a bit of a tough critic on food. Some of his dishes, such as the avocado toast, need some more seasoning and acid. I can say the same about the mushroom empanadas. The filling and dough was just okay; I did enjoy the Louisiana fried oysters and we also loved the salad with the crispy goat cheese on top. We made several food/beverage related requests during our stay (without going in to detail) that some hosts may have had problems with; not Jeanine and Michael; they were more than happy to oblige. In sum, we recommend staying at the Henderson for accommodating, easy going hosts, 20s ambiance , and friendly staff. We ate two dinners at Harvey's (the porch restaurant) at the Henderson, and while we're not blown away by the food, the 4-5 small plates we ate were well presented and enjoyable. read more

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Henderson. Everything was clean, owner/operators were friendly and generous, a pre-ordered Charcuterie board was interesting and well appointed. Breakfast portions were small for a big eater, the food was good and the service friendly and efficient. Pros: Friendly service (thanks for the help with luggage!) Clean room and bathroom. Lots of towels! Very nice linens on bed (good pillows!) Great porches, lots of seating Note: had it been any warmer our room on the third floor would have been too hot. Today is Mother's Day , my father had made a reservation on their website for a family of 6 to dine at their restaurant. When we get to the place one part of the restaurant was closed off so we had to go around construction, get in the middle of the road just so we could go around the corner to the other side of the restaurant. Then as we stand outside a lady greets us & we tell her we have a reservation . She then has someone else come outside to talk to us & we tell them the same thing as we told her . She then comes back outside & tells us "she can't find our reservation " . Like I said previously my father had made the reservation online on their website, my father tells her that & she then goes "oh we don't do online reservations " . What do you mean you don't do online reservations ? You have a whole thing on your website stating you can book & get a reservation online , but now it's only "over the phone "? We then asked if we could still be seated because the place was EMPTY but she then said no. So now me & the family have to scramble to find a new place to enjoy Mother's Day because of their mistakes & because they don't know how to update or fix their website. read more

While the food was fine (and by that I mean okay, nothing special), it was ridiculously priced for the portions. We often order, then if still hungry, order more. That was our plan til we saw the price/portion and opted against. We're local, work in the food industry, appreciate the challenges of semi-post COVID supply chain, and know prices are higher. The owners were very nice and welcoming. Decorated nicely. Our main concern was the price compared to other B&B. Really seemed too high $$$. We had a group of five couples and were ask if we could come to breakfast in shifts. They could see our concern because we came as a group and wanted to eat together, they did a very good accommodating us and breakfast was served as close as possible which made it very nice. Parking is bad to have so many rooms but not much they can do about that. So all in all nice place just expensive. read more

Wonderful! B&B is in a great location in the middle of quaint Hendersonville. The building was constructed in the early 1900s and has always been a hotel. Awesome wrap around porch. Wine served 5-6pm and they offer delicious cookies. My room was decorated with sweet colors and antiques. Bring your own toiletries. A/C unit and fan combo kept me cool at night. The owners are very friendly. Breakfast was SO good! They always offer sweet and savory options and both looked good! I'd def stay here again if I'm back in the area. read more

My husband and I just returned from a wedding weekend staying at The Henderson and we could not have loved it more! The entire inn was booked with wedding guests for the event we were attending and the staff went above and beyond to keep all of us comfy while celebrating. The beds were brand new and sooo comfortable- I haven't slept that well in a hotel in years! Every surface was freshly painted and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was made to order each morning and I'm still dreaming about the pancakes with homemade blueberry syrup. Our group spent the *most lovely* afternoon on the huge wrap around porch- it was a perfect way to gather as a large group! The location was fantastic as well- so many great spots to eat and drink all within walking distance! The Henderson is a historic gem and it's owners are fantastic hosts. I would love to live inside this bed and breakfast, that's how much I enjoyed it. I've had the chance to stay here twice. The owners are super friendly. You'll feel right at home with your own key to the front door for when you come "home" late afterhours. The rooms are beautiful and have a very small town country-bumpkin appeal to them. They are tastefully decorated. Very clean, and well kept. The stairs creek as you walk up to the second or third floors but it has a cutesy appeal to it. If I was going to die tomorrow, I'd want to eat their breakfast here for my last meal. It is that good. Home made, the menu changed the second time I returned. In season fruits garnish your plates and real maple syrup on top of cinnamin waffles. It is a block away from the main street, and there's plenty to do over here. One Friday night I saw square dancers at a street dance and the next day there was an art walk gallery set up along the street. I believe they do serve wine on the front porch even if you aren't a guest, as well as dinner, but I never had the opportunity to try it. Plenty to do, and plenty to see. Give this place a try, even if it's just for one night! read more

This review is for the "3rd Avenue Bistro," located in and operated by the Inn on Church. Four of us had Sunday Brunch here. The table on the verandah was pleasant (Sunday traffic being lighter than midweek) and the service was excellent. Oh, and the iced tea was very good. From there things were at best middling, and my two star rating reflects the fact that for their prices and their presentation, we had reason to expect more. Pros: 1. Spouse enjoyed his scallop dish (the special) - he's seldom met a scallop he didn't like, but these were particularly well prepared. Grilled, with gentle seasonings. As to the rest of the plate, more about this later. 2. I tried the white gazpacho which was served in a tiny glass teacup complete with saucer. It was well seasoned, creamy, with little bits of . . . ?? . . . something that added a bit of texture. All told, a good choice. 3. My companions opted for peach crepes and the omelet which were pronounced acceptable, nothing great. Now, the cons: 1. The bread (of which we were each served a single teeny sliver) was Very Stale. The butter, served in 3/4 tsp blobs for two persons, was fresh from the freezer. 2. I chose the "smoked trout and eggs". Have eaten smoked trout many times, I know it comes in many formats. This one was simply a mistake. The flavor was total sugar/caramel, with the taste of trout almost totally masked. The dish was served with an egg -- cooked, and cooked, and cooked. A little moist yoke would have been a blessing. All rested on a bed of Extremely Ordinary (and not terribly hot) cubes of fried potatoes. 3. And then - the garnishes. Here's where the two stars rating really kicks in. The Bistro is trying too hard. Every dish on the menu has several cutesy things listed, in all their French glory - and on the plates, what you find is this teeny garnish here, that little blob of decoration there, not particularly related to anything else other than the opportunity to be pretentious. To cite just one example, Spouse's plate had on the side a wee fried quail egg, cute and tasty but not related to anything else by placement or palate. Would I try this restaurant again? Maybe, just out of curiosity to see if they handle everyday meals more lightly. read more

This review is for the restaurant only: My family went here for Thanksgiving dinner and was very disappointed. To begin with, instead of eating in the original inn, we were taken to the much less charming annex area, which set the tone for our meal. Dinner was a four course meal and I started with the duck. The meat was tender and flavorful, though cold. My parents had the soup and seemed pretty satisfied. Then the salad came. I had several wilted greens in my salad, but my mother's was full of rotten pieces! Though our waiter was defensive, we did have a second waitress as who was extremely friendly, responsive, and professional- wish we could have just dealt with her. The main course (turkey, stuffing, greens, and two types of potatoes) was good. The stuffing, in particular, was very flavorful and moist. I enjoyed it. We each got a different desert and, although they weren't homemade (and can't touch my mother's pecan and pumpkin pies), they were tasty enough. Most importantly, my mother- who is still recovering from a life threatening illness- was up all night with an upset stomach and bathroom issues.... I blame it on the salad. This was our only meal for Thanksgiving, so it couldn't have been anything else. Beware! And all this for a $200 price tag! Overall, the atmosphere of this historic inn probably makes it worth a stay... but book your dinner reservations elsewhere. Hendersonville and Asheville are packed full of wonderful restaurants. The food our party pf 5 indulged in for Sunday brunch in January was very good, but disappointedly incomplete, except for my Crab cakes Benedict, which was a nice portion and included the English Muffin underneath. An omelet at our table came with no side except fruit cup garnish. Toast, grits, etc. were not even offered or mentioned when ordering so that it could have been added. The breakfast wrap was tasty and a good portion. The special scallops were not served with a side to compliment them. The waitress may have improved her service if the lack of standard sides would have been indicated up front, by "would you like toast, grits, fruit or hash browned potatoes with that, sir?" We will not return for a meal. Sitting by the fire in the lobby was delightful, with Bloody Mary and mimosas. read more

The air conditioner is a window unit that doesn't cool the room. The floors of the room were slanted and the furniture was tilted as a result. The linens were polyester, the bathroom had peeling paint. Windows didn't close and the windows were single pane, and peeling paint in the sills, not to mention the filthy blinds that covered them. Poor lighting, inadequate seating in the room and the description of the room as a suite was a sham. It was a bedroom with a tiny foyer leading to a bathroom. The food was not true to description either. "Avocado" toast was guacamole spread thin on a slice of "brown" bread which was supposed to be "whole wheat". The bacon was supposed to be "applewood smoked Bacon" but it was only thin strips of regular bacon. The ac was noisy and so was the traffic noise from the street from the windows that wouldn't close and that were in need of replacement. read more

The Inn is "an original" in every way, from the beautiful decor to the friendly bar and lounge. But, the restaurant is the best in the whole town - soups to linger over, appetizers you'll never find in any other restaurant and main courses that are delicious. We've been eating here for 9 years, but this was the best. The drinks are refreshing and imaginative. The pork belly appetizer was 4 large pieces, enough for a dinner. The duck confit with the potato gnocchi was like eating little potato pillows. The duck was tender and not greasy. The cucumber gaspacho was like summer in a bowl. The scallops were done perfectly. The desserts, watermelon panna cotta and s'mores dessert were a perfect end to a great meal. Our new favorite place in Hendersonville. Freezing!!!! Stayed there on 11/10/18, very dissatisfied. This biggest issue was that the Inn is not heated, no central heating source. What?!?! Seriously, there are space heaters in the room but it could not keep up with the 30 degree weather we had that night. I was sure that the breakfast dinning room would be heated, but it was not. We were told it was an old building; which didn't cut it because there were radiators in the rooms, so at some point there was a heat source. I had to go back to the room to get more clothes to put on. had we known there was no heat in the rooms we would not have wasted our money. Also, there was no warm welcome. We showed up early and were told to come back at 3 to check in; they were hosting a private party and seemed overwhelmed. I had to change my clothes when we got there so I used the restaurant restroom but it was clear we were not welcomed to do that. Oh and the shower head was shot and only dribbled out water. First time dining at Harvey's Restaurant in The Henderson, for our Thanksgiving meal. Very pleasantly surprised! A traditional, very tasty meal served family style (no buffet!). Loved it. The food was very good, staff was great (though very busy, hustling). We even had a guest teenager playing the piano for a bit. There are new owners here! And everything is better -- the ambiance - there's a little bar area in the parlor that guys particularly like because the tv is set to the game of the day - and there are beautiful fresh flowers everywhere. I've had lunch there several times recently and the crab cakes were some of the tastiest I've ever had and the portion size was so large I had to take some home. There is no finer place in the area in which to dine outside altho traffic can be loud on one side. I found it to be more $$ than $$$$ but I don't know about dinner. I'm local so I didn't stay at the inn. I've heard in the past that the heating system is loud and over zealous. read more

We were the first customers for lunch at the very charming Bed & Breakfast "Inn on Church Street" and were delighted when we walked through the old fashioned drawing rooms to a lovely dining room with sharp white tablecloths and antique atmosphere. The soup of the day based on the freshest crops was a really creamy Butternut Squash & my fresh salad topped with chicken salad with bits of apples also at their peak) with apple vinagarette dressing was just perfect. I believe there are 20 rooms upstairs The new owners shared their plans & I wish them well! We arranged to have our wedding reception at The Henderson in December. What a perfect decision that was for us! The Henderson is a beautiful historic inn located within walking distance of downtown Hendersonville. Michael and Jeanne, the owners, were friendly, helpful, and pleasant to work with while planning our reception. I really felt at home from the first time I met with them. They took care of all of the details which made our day very special and relaxing. Michael prepared an outstanding meal from the appetizer to the dessert...received raves from everyone there. My husband and I had read an article in "Our State" magazine about Hendersonville, and it sounded like a perfect weekend getaway during some extremely stressful times. I called the Chamber of Commerce for some more info and suggestions on places to stay and the very nice man I spoke with named a few per what we were looking for. Then he added "oh, and there's also the Inn on Church" that was built by his grandfather (not pushing it whatsoever). I decided to check out Inn on Church first because of our lovely conversation. I called and spoke with Joe, the who co-owned the Inn with his wife. He seemed friendly enough and the Inn was in a good location, so I booked two nights for the following weekend. He asked for our credit card to hold the room and I gave it to him with no concerns. The VERY NEXT day a major issue arose with a newly adopted dog, and I called to alert him that we might have to cancel. His answer was "I'm sure you read about our 14-day cancellation policy" and I said "NO, I did not and since we booked those two days just yesterday, seven days in advance, that would have been impossible". His response was "see what happens with the dog and call me tomorrow". OK, for all you animal lovers out there, the dog is fine, but we could not have made it that weekend so I called the next day to cancel. Joe said we should bring the dog, but that was not possible nor the point of our brief getaway. On that note he maintained he was charging us for two nights. What was planned on being a stress reducing weekend induced even more. He had no compassion for our situation and I reported him to Hendersonville's Chamber of Commerce. They said he evidently had become problematic again, the wife was far more understanding (but she never answered the phone). I called him again before I began a credit card dispute. Second call & he said he'd refund one night only, so we filed a dispute and won. Stress, stress, stress. The Chamber of Commerce in Hendersonville kindly asked that we don't let our experience with him influence us on visiting there. Whole experience left such a bad taste in our mouth we decided we never would. read more

My husband and I stayed here when I was in town for business. The owners are lovely and not pushy at all. Our room was wonderful with all the little quirks and charm of an old inn. The bed was comfortable and breakfast was delicious! If I am in town again I would definitely stay here again! read more
