I've got a smile on my face just writing about it! The selection of ales was a relatively familiar one, with a tasty exception in Golden Pippen, delicious. They had 5 others, including a couple that have to be brought up from the cellar in a jug (a few places locally do this and boast of doing this..not quite sure why it is such a big deal). Was surprised and happy to see Dark Star Hophead so far from home too. Quite a bit of food choice, including a selection of pies. I braved the game pie as it contained venison and pheasant, neither of which I had previously sampled. This was nice too. The pub really can do no wrong! It was seriously difficult tearing myself away from the Hollybush, to try some other local pubs.

It's a 10 minute walk from the nearest bus station in Milford, a little remote and easy to miss (God bless Google Maps!). Very popular with the locals. There are several good pubs within a short radius (this one, the Strutt-on-Arms & the King Williams IV). Get a zig-zag ticket on the Sixes buses from Derby so you can hop on and off at the various stops of your crawl.

Generally the people in the pub are very friendly and the music selection is good and varied, usually leaning towards alternative rock/metal. The pub is small but nice and both staff members we saw today (young ladies) were polite, friendly and gave good service. We both decided to try the chicken curry which was pretty good, tasty, plenty of chicken and a nice level of spiciness. The mango chutney had a nice bite to it. Two thumbs up on this one. Most nights of the week, the Wheel is full because of its good reputation and the fact that it shows most big sporting events. The pub itself is a fair size, but not huge and has an open plan feel, with a good range of outdoor seating too. On Friday and Saturday nights it is packed to the rafters, especially as most Saturday nights have live entertainment - bands, individual singers etc. Some of the acts attract quite a following, so if you want a seat, its best to get there early. The bar staff are friendly, even though they seem to be permanently busy. A good pub, that serves good beer in a lively atmosphere.

The décor is more stylish than the one you will find in other Spoons, though still easily recognizable. The food of course is the same that you will find in other JDW pubs, with very minor variations (e.g. the selection of small plates is smaller here than e.g at The Babington Arms, also in Derby). The drinks selection is huge and the prices competitive (try and find a real ale from UKP 2,75 at any pub that isn't a Spoon!), and that of course attracts a certain clientèle, especially on weekend nights. If you can accept that, it's a highly recommendable place for inexpensive drinks and (usually reliable) food.

Among the many good pubs in the area (for an even greater choice of real ales, consider The Flower Pot), The Silk Mill is definitely the finest in terms of food. Their menu isn't huge (a good sign!), but varied - it's a modern interpretation of pub food, not so much grub but real food. As you might expect, prices for said food are also a tad higher than the local pub standard. But it's worth it. The only food I had there personally was their signature "pig board," a sharer that included sausages wrapped in bacon, belly pork, pork pie and smoky popcorn. Very nice indeed, and well presented. I talked to other patrons who were trying their imaginative burgers, and they were all delighted by the quality and presentation. This is one of the "hot spots" in Derby, so expect it to get very busy during weeknights and, especially, on weekends. When it's packed, the preparation of the food may take up to one hour (yes, that's 60 minutes). So carefully consider in advance whether you've got the time to linger. Of course, given the variety and quality of drinks, lingering doesn't seem to be such a bad option after all. Service is friendly, if not always competent (beware of flying food trays when things get busy), the decor very appealing and inviting. The Silk Mill is about a 10 minute walk from Derby Bus Station.
