Not a bad place for a beer!
    Todd L.

Solid English pub that is worth a trip, it's fun, serious old English and a place locals hang out at. It's a funky weird layout so walk around in it to see all the rooms if you can't find a table. Staff is typical stiff local pub types, they don't seem to care if you're there when you walk in but warm up once you get talking. Talked to several locals which was fun. Food was descent, typical pub fare with no surprises. Beer was nice, several local options that were good with some standbys just in case you can't fInd something to your liking. Decor is eclectic and doubtful in authenticity but still fun and it's a cool place to have a beer in.

Aweosme little tavern! We sat outside for a beverage then sat in the room/cavern near the bar with the bull hook and ring! We had a local show us and several others how to swing the hook and land it on the horn. The bar tenders were fun! They told us all about the old pumping style used for tap beer. The food was great! I had the pork belly. This place was built in 1189 the oldest tavern in England. If in Nottingham make time to stop by for a meal or beverage.

You HAVE to have a pint in here if you make the trip to Nottingham! It's the oldest pup in England, apparently, and to sit inside and soak up the history was enough for me.... Great pub. Guinness was perfect! I only had the chips so I can't really write a food review based on those, although they were delicious...

    Bar!

Unbelievable! Built into the promitory on which the old Nottingham Castle used to stand, this old pub has numerous rooms carved into the actual rock. The bar staff is extremely pleasant and ready to offer their recommendations on both food and drink. I certainly took them up on their generosity and had the house ale: Olde Trip. I found it to be a fantastic darker ale which went along nicely with their recommended house specialty: the beef and ale pie. Stop by, choose a room to relax in, and enjoy this AMAZING establishment!!

Awesome pub! Good food, good drinks and a gift shop. I love gift shops! The Trip is full of little rooms here and there, one of which is supposedly haunted. Mysterious breaking glasses and ghostly hands on your shoulder? Yes please! Tours of the cellars are also available for £2.50. But we learned the hard way you have to book 7 days in advance, as we were turned down because the tours were full. The pub claims to be the oldest inn in England, dating back to 1189AD. That is pretty damn old! The food is pretty good too, especially the fried halloumi and chips. This pub is a must if you visit Nottingham.

i really almost don't care about whether or not the food is good...because being able to sit in a cavernous pub that has been there since 1189.. YES 1189... is well worth it! Luckily, the standard pub fare was also good so there wasn't an issue there! phew! it's old, crickety, tons of levels, half levels, cursed model pirate ship (if you clean it, you die), tons of beer, food, and being able to say you ate in the oldest pub in england - - i feel like i've been inducted into some kind of 'cool kids' club. Tons of great ales to choose from - we tried some kind of Robin Hood ale (but of course!) and the Olde Trip. They were both really great. Olde Trip was as smooth as could be. Robin Hood had quite the bite to it. Had so much fun at this kitschy, yet seemingly-authentic, place!

Absolutely loved this place! The pub has a sign saying it's the oldest pub of England! I don't know if that's true but you would definitely say so! The place is very cosy and gives you a feeling like you're back in the middle ages! It looks a bit like you're in a cave with how the walls look and the low ceiling. If you're tall you have to be careful with your head! My partner ordered a pasta and a bbq chicken dish and they were both really delicious! The staff was also very kind and we didn't have to wait long for our food. The toilets are clean and like what used to be common in old pubs, the toilets are outside! If you want to visit a pub in Nottingham I would really recommend you this place! It was absolutely lovely!

This place is great it's the history mixed with the drinking. The foods solid. The beers flowing. And the history is body shaking.

Backstreet Boozer - Lacks Customer Service…read more If you're even considering setting foot in this abysmal excuse for an establishment, do yourself a favour and don't. In a city like Nottingham, brimming with exceptional venues that raise the bar for quality and service, this disgrace somehow manages to scrape the absolute bottom of the barrel. The so-called "customer service" here is nothing short of a shambles--marked by sheer incompetence, an utter lack of basic courtesy, and staff who seem to have perfected the art of being surly and unhelpful. But the real pièce de résistance of this disaster is the landlord, who somehow manages to be even ruder than his staff. Whether you're a first-time visitor, a local, or simply someone with a shred of self-respect, avoid this trainwreck like the plague. Nottingham offers an abundance of refined, reputable establishments where patrons are treated with the professionalism and respect they deserve. Save your time, money, and sanity--bypass this disaster and enjoy one of the city's far superior options instead.

The staff are all lovely and friendly and very helpful. There was a large group of us and the barman brought our drinks over to our table. Also when my friend spilt his drink there was immediately someone there with a cloth to mop up even before we asked. They have a great selection of real ales on tap as well as a good selection of the usual lagers and beers. There is also a selection of food and snacks. I wasn't too impressed with the cleanliness in the ladies toilets but it was the end of the night. One of the nicest things about this pub is that there is no loud thumping music so you can sit and have a relaxing drink in a nice atmosphere and chat easily without having to shout to your friends.

Sure, you'll get the usual array of GK ales, only a few of which can actually be recommended. However, there are usually many guest ales available on tap, too - plus, they're running their own beer festivals. The location itself is just splendid: The pub is subdivided into several discrete sections, with a larger room to the back. Beautiful old wood for décor, a bar each in the three areas - a small outside seating area, generally nice staff - What's not to like? It is a pub full of interesting, wood panelled, atmospheric rooms each with their own story to tell. Keeps a good range of real ales and food. Recently refurbished. Well worth a visit. A group of Carmelite Friars arrived in Nottingham in 1276 and readily obtained lands and property. They established a Friary (on what is now Friar Lane) and their lands extended to include the site of what is now The Bell Inn. By the accurate dating of the building, it's identification as a hostelry with stables, and it's location, it is reliably considered that the building was the guesthouse of the Friary. The Bell originally served as a refectory of the Carmelite monastery then sited on Beast market Hill, just below St James Street Junction. Henry VIII closed small monasteries in 1539 in an effort to tap a valuable source of income, and then it became a secular alehouse, taking it's name from the Angelus bell (Latin word meaning 'the noon-day bell') that hung outside the monks' refectory, which explains how The Bell got its name. Dendrochronology dating evidence from timbers in the Bell Inn gives a date for the building of c.1420. Hardys & Hansons, Greene King IPA 3.6% abv and Abbot Ale 5% abv, plus a wide selection of quality guest ales from an ever-changing selection.
