Harvey ticks the box on every dimension - beautiful setting, great vibe including the music, fantastic service, great cocktails and of course the innovative, unique, delicious food. Our waiter gave us great tips in navigating the menu and experiencing the variety - and it could not have been a more special experience celebrating my brother's 60th birthday with my 91 years old dad. They have 3 Old Fashion options - we tried 2 and they were both rock solid. The ravioli and trout almandine are savory entrees that didn't disappoint. The baked potato is an innovative cloud pleaser but highly recommend sharing. And don't sleep on the onion soup - I've never experienced anything like it. My friend scored a last minute dinner reservation while I was visiting, and I'm glad she did! We came for dinner with a group of 4 on a Sunday. The restaurant was beautiful and the service was amazing. I appreciated that our waitress was very knowledgeable about the dishes on the menu and what ingredients they contained, which is perfect for anyone with allergies or dietary restrictions (like myself). We were seated near the open kitchen which also added to the dining experience. I tried: - Scallop toast - I really enjoyed this. It was mild, not fishy tasting at all, and the brioche was toasted very well. I'm not a huge seafood person aside from sushi and poke, and had never had scallops before, so I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. - Ricotta Raviolini - I was not a huge fan of this, which was especially disappoint since it was my main entree / the most expensive on this list. It was essentially a folded sheet of pasta with a tiny bit of ricotta, topped with barely cooked asparagus and snap peas. The menu also lists lemon infused olive oil, but I didn't taste that at all. The parts of the raviolini with a good amount of ricotta were delicious, but the dish overall was bland and tasted like raw asparagus and peas. My friends also tried it and none of them liked it either. - Baked Potato with The Works - super simple and perfectly executed. It comes with bacon, which we got on the side since I don't eat red meat. Potato was fluffy and salted perfectly, with a good amount of other toppings. My friends who do eat bacon said it tasted more like ham than bacon, and they actually preferred the potato without it. - Dark Chocolate Bread Pudding - Loved it. I love bread pudding and chocolate pudding, but never thought to combine the two. It was delicious - soft, not super sweet, and great portion size. I would recommend sharing, it's pretty rich which can be overwhelming at a certain point. - Flightless Bird mocktail - this was one of the best mocktails I've tried. It has a black tea base but tasted more like a regular cocktail without the alcohol burn rather than tea. Everyone at the table enjoyed trying it too. While I continue to enjoy and recommend the Harvey House there were a couple disappointments last visit. What was once a complete joy to order and something every one looked forward to, the relish tray, has been significantly downgraded. Instead of a variety of perfectly blanched vegetables, deviled eggs, house made crackers, the green goddess dressing we got red and orange pickled beets, some nice sliced cucumber pickle, 4 chunks of summer sausage, the whitefish spread, a garlicky onion dip and skinny breadsticks. We always start with the martini service and the relish tray. Service at Harvey House has always been superior and was last visit. I ordered the Atlantic Roast Cod which was beautifully seared, tender, juicy and flavorful - everything on the plate was delicious. My friend ordered the Ricotta Raviolini which is served as one sheet of what would have been tiny ravioli if they had been cut into individual pasta. It was served with beautifully prepared asparagus and fresh peas in a delightful sauce. But the raviolini were ordinary. The Pavlova was perfection and because it was my friend's b'day we were given a Brandy Alexander to share. We'll definitely be back. We've wanted to get to the Harvey House for some time. We finally made it this evening with another couple who have been there several times before. The menu is not overwhelming, and among the four of us we ordered well over half the entree menu. I really enjoyed the walleye. Walleye can be hit or miss and thins was a hit. Also ordered were the rigatoni and the pierogi. Everything was on point. We also ordered a side of the squash which was quite nice. We started with the relish tray and several cocktails. I was impressed with the whisky sour... properly made with egg whites and dotted with bitters. We also had a sampling of the desserts. I'd say the parsnip cake was overall the winner here. I arrived in Madison late on a Sunday evening after driving from Cleveland. As I started walking to another restaurant from my hotel, I walked by Harvey House and was intrigued. Soon I was seated at the bar and served a mezcal cocktail, a kale Caesar salad, and a walleye filet-o-fish. All were sublime. The bartenders kept my water glass full (I had intentionally under-hydrated for the long drive) and recommended the pavlova for dessert. I was glad I was persuaded. Started with the ice-cold martini - Best martini I've ever had and truly ice-cold. Tiny carafe on ice was placed on the table and our server switched out the glass halfway through to a new chilled glass, timed perfectly, and poured my martini in the fresh chilled glass. Really nice touch. To start, we shared the Sizzling Shrimp De Jonghe. Shrimp and garlic butter... You really cannot go wrong. Then, had the Charcoal Grilled NY Strip with a glass of Sangiovese - Félsina "Berardenga". Steak was cooked perfectly. Potatoes and onions were delightful and cooked to perfection as well. They felt just as important as the steak as opposed to side characters. For dessert, we shared the Strawberries & Cream Pavlova. Now, all of the desserts really speak to me on this menu and I should only be so lucky to one day try all of them... but I do highly recommend getting the pavlova, as it was incredible. A nice change of pace from all of the crème brûlée and NY cheesecake, as much as I also love those classics. It was fluffy, creamy, flavorful, and just had such a nice blend of textures with fresh fruit - A fun way to wrap up our dinner! Both the exterior and interior are very well-designed. Inside the restaurant: cozy (but not sleepy), classy (without feeling stuffy), and lighting is perfect. Our server was very nice and gave us some good recs. My fiancé had an Old Fashioned, I had a Hotel Washington Punch, and we shared the Banana Foster Pavlova which was to die for. The next time we come here we'll definitely have dinner, as the entree options looked enticing. This is not a fault of the restaurant or staff but my fiancé and I felt there was something offputting (and dare I say, judgmental) about the crowd/vibe on the night we visited. A friend recommend Harvey House while we were in town for our 7 year anniversary from Chicago and we were blown away! The Harvey House has won our hearts and taste bud allegiance for all future visits! Second of all, we had the most fabulous server: Veronica. She took great care of us and ensured that we had an excellent dinning experience and 7-year anniversary celebration! Thanks Veronica! Third, and most importantly, every dish and drink was absolutely delectable. Starting with the house roll, to the Brussel sprouts, and the garlic shrimp, our appetizer selection was phenomenal. My husband got the Foggy Geezer IPA from Three Floyds and I got a dirty gin martini. Yum! For our anniversary, they surprised us with complimentary champagne. We traveled in from Chicago, and what was our first ever trip to Madison was made absolutely perfect by an evening at The Harvey House, a schmaltzy, classy testament to Wisconsin supper clubs of old, built into an historic train station! Our server, Kennedy, was simply outstanding: super informative and accommodating while being down-to-earth and personable. The ambience was warm and inviting, plush and quite romantic. We sat in the house's best seats: a spacious booth facing the kitchen, allowing us a behind-the-scenes glimpse as we watched an incredibly talented room of chefs firing dishes left and right, elevating an already cool experience. And the food was absolutely incredible! We ordered the Superior Walleye- a Must if you've never been... the creamy horseradish sabayon they serve it with was an inspired choice. So rich and lovely. And then we also ordered the Herb Roasted Chicken. I never think restaurant chicken will be all that special, but I was wrong this time; it was top notch and sooooo decadently delicious. Couldn't recommend either dish more highly. We were there celebrating an anniversary and also our recent engagement, so they trotted out champagne in addition to the martinis we ordered - ALL of which were expertly crafted (and the martinis were served in generous portions in refill glasses that were transferred by our server into fresh chilled glasses when our first drink got low). And we even received complimentary digestif sipping shots after it was all a memory. We even got a visit from the GM who congratulated us and thanked us for dropping in, making us feel VERY special indeed. We made reservations rather last minute and so sat at the upstairs bar. Usually eating a meal at the bar can be a lesser experience, but I think our experience was greatly enhanced by sitting at the bar. First, it was a bar for six, so it was small and intimate. Second, the bartender was attentive, informative, conversational, fun, and truly improving the dining experience. All that was great, but what truly impressed was the food. We had a group dinner at Harvey House, and they really put out the stops for our group. First we had a private room upstairs, despite away from the open kitchen (my favorite part), it was very nice to have that quiet space. Upon entering the private room, the tables were already set up with our apps, pickled veggies, shrimp cocktail and beets salad. Nicely presented with dishes at each end of the table. Loved the shrimp cocktail and beets salad. I did not enjoy the pickled veggies, perhaps I picked the wrong veggie but the pickles were so strong, I could've done without trying this. Our pre-fixe menu was nicely selected, we were able to get a selected tasting of the menu, which I really liked! We had an option of salad (I selected the kale salad) and a selection of 4 different mains, for which I selected the walleye as this is a local dish. My walleye was delicious and perfectly cooked, it had a layer of cracker on top, which changed the dynamic of the texture. I also opted instead of the spatzle, for a side of veggies and the kitchen changed it to cauliflower (which I was so thrilled about). The desserts were also an option, I selected the lemon pudding, I sadly did not care too much for this dessert, I selected the least sweet option. Also want to mention our waiter Neil was so attentive, I asked for mocktails and he made me two different very delicious drinks! We started with the chicken liver mousse. It comes in a nice jar with toasted brioche strips and small amount of mixed greens. OMG it's quite good. Not as rich as pate but a lighter version. It's an upscale super club with some fantastic drinks (try their dirty martini!) and good food. Luke/Lucas was our incredibly attentive server and overall we had a fun and delicious meal. We definitely ordered a few too many apps so by the time our meal came I was stuffed but it was worth it!
