Low quality haircuts. I don't normally post reviews, but twice now have I had two of the worst haircuts of my life from the same stylist at this location who says they are one of the managers. She says she is "self taught" which is not a good sign. She uses thinning shears for the whole cut which hides the inconsistencies, but ultimately makes for a bad and lumpy looking haircut. She also doesn't shape the sides at all. I had to take trimmers to my own hair to fix what she missed. The attention to detail just isn't there. Very disappointing Go elsewhere. Some stylists are fine but this particular stylist gives a really bad haircut. read more

This was my first visit, and didn't know what to expect. After I left, I saw the things included in a haircut from the website: 1. An excellent haircut: Yes, the haircut was good. 2. Shampoo and Conditioner: No. I was asked "do you want to add a shampoo?" and it sounded like it was extra, so I declined. (paid full price at the register though) 3. Relaxing Hot Towel: No. I was asked "if you want a hot towel let me know" as I was getting up to leave. Out of context I had no idea what she meant. 4. Eyebrow & Mustache Trim: Eyebrows, yes. Mustache, no. (was not asked) 5. Shoulder Massage: NO. NOT EVEN MENTIONED. This is why I chose to try this place, and it wasn't even mentioned. First time at TGP and it might be the worst haircut I've ever gotten. I signed up for an appointment to try it out because at a base price of $25, I would definitely be a returning customer with a good cut. Turns out, I'll never be back. For starters I asked for a 3/2/1 fade on the sides with different trimmer guard lengths, then blended into the top with scissors on top. Pretty standard cut with the current style, and stylists should be cutting this 1000x a week. You'd think most stylists would know what a 3/2/1 mean. She starts on the top of my head with what feels like a no guard, and 'clicks' the default length down for the mid and bottom. I don't even think she changed guards on the clippers. Since she went in 100 mph starting on the top of what should be the blend, it was already too late. No point in getting upset when it's off your head already, and she has to cut the rest of your hair. Well, I look like a jarhead - there is absolutely no fade/contrast at all, it's not blended into the side, and the clipper cut is way too high on my head. Not to mention she did a half ass job on the top with scissors. Even somehow managed to gap up the back neck line. She ended by putting a butt load of product in my hair to make it look like less of a trainwreck than it was. Pic is next day washed without product. Besides the cut, the washout and the 'massage' was absolutely pathetic. I'm talking less than 1 minute for washing out my hair, and spraying the back on my head with cold water as she was waiting for it to warm up. Shoulder 'massage' consisted of pulling out a crappy massage gun and running it once over each should for no more than 10 seconds. Don't even bother. You can go to another chain that rhymes with "shorts chips" and pay 5 more bucks for a much better haircut. They will even give you a half decent wash and massage with the MVP cut. It's still a budget haircut and depending on the stylist, you may get the usual wham bam 20 min haircut without much individualized care but this place makes SC look like royalty. I still tipped because I felt obligated, but left furious. This is the LAST time I cheap out on a haircut, and talk about a blow to my confidence. At least it will grow out and I learned my lesson. If you want anything more complicated than a no-guard cut all over, take your money somewhere else because this place is a joke. read more

Been going to the location on 54 in Durham for over a year and started with a new stylist recently bc my old one left. My old stylist was fantastic and friendly and efficient. I should've known something was wrong when the new person who cut my hair started telling me the franchise gossip about my old stylist and dragging her name thru the dirt. That was just tacky. And this was a manager, too. But in a town with so few decent barbers, I decided to give them a chance. Today, I arrived on time, nobody was in the waiting area yet she ran 20 minutes late. Okay, things happen, I get it. (The place is always understaffed and they don't have a receptionist.) But not even an acknowledgment like "hey thanks for waiting, sorry about the wait" whatever...it's a pretty easy win. So, today was my 3rd visit with her; the previous 2 cuts with her were great. I knew she was chatty but when you find someone who can cut your hair to your liking, you become loyal. Today though? WORST haircut of my adult life (also the most tedious to sit thru). My hair is easy to cut, and usually takes around 12 minutes. It took FORTY-FIVE (that's 45) minutes today because all she did was TALK and TALK and TALK and TALK about herself. And watch TV (actually stopped cutting at one point to TURN THE CHANNEL so she could watch Iron Chef). The worst part? She just kept cutting...and cutting... and cutting. I tried to interrupt to tell her to stop but NOPE. She cut my bangs straight across like Dumb and Dumber but WAY shorter so I had to ask her to blend it. She was going to send me on my way until I pointed out that she didn't cut the left side of my head. I told her I had an important meeting coming up but she just turned it around and started telling me the next thing on her mind. By the time I got out of there, I looked like I'd been on chemotherapy. Only thing I can do now is let it grow. NEVER going back here. F this place. I've tried 3 other stylists here and each has been nothing to write home about. I thought I found someone reliable who would get my business every 3 weeks. I'm so disappointed. Girl was in her own little world just talking about herself, jumping from one topic to the next....and the next....and the next. 45 minutes of torture but nothing compared to what I have to look at for the next 4 weeks. Hey Benya, a word of advice: just STFU and focus on your job because you actually are capable of giving a good haircut. NOT on what's on TV. NOT on your love of UNC. NOT basketball. Because CUSTOMERS (especially men) do not care. We just want you to FOCUS on cutting hair so we look good and you actually DESERVE our money. I don't mind being social but you were in your own world and my hair is proof. I thought I found a good stylist in a town of crap stylists. You let me down. I know you said it was busy and you were short handed but if that was the case then it should've been a quick visit. Not one where I had to listen to you talk about Beyonce tickets. This is my last resort for my children's haircuts from r some time but I am now taking it off my list. If 0 stars were an option I would give them that rating. The haircuts are hit or miss but my boys are 13 and 5 so it won't ant too big a deal. We stopped going often because they charged us for full service but skipped many of the standard services with my bbolder son, even though they were part of what we paid for. Today I had scheduled an appointment for 4:30. They sent a text yesterday asking to reschedule for 4:20 or 4:40. I was happy to do that. I received a confirmation for my 4:20pm at 2:00 so headed there after rearranging my schedule to accommodate them. When I got there the person at the front desk told me they had tried to call me that morning (they had not) , said I had scheduled with a particular stylist (I had not) and said they were told when I came in to reschedule my appointment for later in the evening (something that would not work for me). I told them I had not received a call, I had received a confirmation text at 2:03pm, and I could not come back later in the day. Instead of apologizing or trying to work my son in or offering to compensate us for the inconvenience they kept insisting I'd been called earlier in the day. I'm done with this place. There are plenty of places I can get my kid a cheap haircut. All they had to do was text so I could try to get one somewhere else and didn't waste my time driving over - clearly they had my text and instead of sending a confirmation text (see picture) all they had to do was send a cancellation and reschedule text. I don't mind having to reschedule, but to have complete disregard for my time - I don't need to go to a business like that for what is typically a substandard haircut anyway. Places make mistakes but this was easy to fix or do right and they couldn't be bothered. I'll take my money and generous tips elsewhere. They were lovely over at the great clips less than 10 minutes away in Meadowmont. I'll be headed there next time and won't be returning to this business. Too many times where I didn't get what I paid for and wasn't treated well. I've given this place many, many chances. read more

Mediocre haircut, terrible service. Have gone here a few times, it's close by and finding places that are open after the workday is a pain. Pretty sure they just leave the phone off the hook rather than taking calls for appointments. Have been trying to call off-and-on for 90 minutes and it's been busy every time. Today makes the second time I have tried to "walk in" and get a haircut. Again I was told the first available APPOINTMENT was at 6. Today is Tuesday. 330pm. First available haircut is at 6 o'clock tonight. I came in here last Saturday morning, and was told the next available haircut was 2 1/2 hours away. I was on time (and signed in) but they had some kind of a miscommunication and gave my appointment away. They made me wait with no real explanation for more than 30 minutes before they were able to work me back in. The haircut was good but the customer service was lousy! Now the owner is claiming it is my fault--saying the receptionist told him she was not there when I signed in and that I stepped out after sign in. Neither of these is true. She was there when I arrived but was on the phone. I signed in and sat in a chair in front of the reception desk. After the the appointments before and after me were served I asked how long it would be since I also had an appointment. I never stepped outside and was in front of the reception desk the entire time. Not only was this handled poorly but now they are lying about what actually happened. read more

Bree and her staff are not only friendly, but they can do an incredible job of giving great service and the price (especially considering the quality of the haircuts) cannot be beat. If you pay cash, haircuts are $11.00 and that includes a shampoo and shoulder massage; with credit cards the total is about $2 more. Great service in a wonderful location and the wait is pleasant as they provide coffee and peanuts and the daily paper with other reading material available. I want to update again to shoutout to Jenna who is a great stylist. The haircut remains consistent and good value after another year plus. Making an appointment is always easy and it is worth it to skip having to wait. They have a lot of time slots. As long as you're fairly flexible, you can call the day before to get an appointment--that's usually what I do. Went for a haircut and beard trim. At $17.75 (hair) and $7 (beard) it was an ok cut. I'll be trying other shops before I come back again to try someone else. After going to this place for over a year, I can confidently rate it 3 stars. Many of the haircuts I've received were okay to fair, but the experience is really inconsistent. Today I went in for what may be my last haircut in a while (I'm moving), and it was actually the best cut I've received there. The hairstylist (I didn't catch her name -- she's White, petite, and has purple-dyed hair at this point) did a fantastic job and actually reproduced what I had in mind. She managed to translate the confused looks and awkward hand-pointing really well; and she even told me what she had done so I have a new set of vocab words that I can use for my next cut. If you decide to get a cut here, find out what her name is and request your appointment with her. Totally worth it. The only problem today was that I made an appointment and then had to wait 20+ minutes to see the stylist. The haircut was definitely worth it, but I'm not totally sold on waiting for a while, especially when they suggest you make an appointment (even the day of) to be seen on time (overbooking much?). In my other experiences, I had a stylist who did not agree with what I wanted, then succumbed to my desires only to change her mind, and then finished off by nearly buzzing my hair off. That is the exact opposite of what I wanted: I actually wanted to grow my top hair out and get the sides buzzed. I don't like, so I normally don't go for, the faded sides and she clearly did not agree with my styling choices. By the time she had changed her mind, she had already buzzed the sides and was compelled to take off the top to compensate. In a different experience, the stylist used some homophobic language to describe a particular haircut and then guess what? I'm gay. It wasn't directed at me, but I don't think that makes it any better. Needless to say, I just wanted to leave as soon as possible. To be fair, there are other stylists who are pretty good and have gotten pretty close to what I wanted or had in mind. The problem that I've noticed is that there are a lot of different stylists. I've been seen by maybe 8 or 9 different ones throughout the time I frequented the place. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe that's a bad thing: but the only thing I know is that the quality varies greatly. Aside from that, the shampoo and conditioning are great, as are the coffee and free peanuts; the massage, I feel, is unnecessary and kind of makes for an awkward experience. Does exactly what it says on the tin. If you pay cash, it costs $11 plus tip, if you use a card, it's $11.50 plus tip. For that, you get a haircut from someone who actually does what you ask, a small TV to watch during the cut, hot towel treatment while you have your hair washed to get all the trimmings out, and it's followed up by a quick shoulder massage. Person who cut my hair was utterly apathetic to my preferences for my haircut. I asked for her to trim my sideburns and they were left untouched until I asked again. She additionally left the neckline uneven. The shampoo and condition was good but the massage thing seems like a gimmick. I'd get rid of the massage part and focus more on haircuts. I'd prefer to pay a few bucks more for a decent haircut. I will not return to this place. read more

I'm a pretty simple guy when it comes to haircuts, and as a result I have resorted to Great Clips for the majority of my hair-shortening needs. After moving to Durham last year, however, I decided it was time to try something new. Having frequented The Guys' Place for over a year now, I'm glad I gave them a chance! At a comparable price point to Great Clips, it's really the additional features that keep me coming back. After a long day at work, the last thing most people want is to go sit and have your hair cut. However, when your trim is finished with a thorough hair washing (basically scalp massage) complete with a soothing hot towel on your face, you'll want to come back every week. Wonderful place for the money! I have been a Great Clips guy for years, but when they raised their price to $14, I figured there had to be a better place. On s whim, I tried A Guys Place. My appointment was for 5:40, but they didn't take me until almost 6. I was kind of irritated but my wife assured me that it is typical to wait 15 minutes or so. After that, everything was perfect. Nicole was my stylist and she was great. Great cut, great shampoo, nice little massage at the end. For $12.50, you can't beat it. I'll for sure be back and would recommend to everyone. I have a very basic cut, but they never have the cut follow the shape of my head. However, for $12, I usually just suck it up and enjoy the pampering. Okay, let me start off by saying that I am a female who was tired of my boyfriend's typical $10 cuts at chains. I wanted him to have a good experience without having to wait a long time for an appt at one of the more "fancier" shops in the CH/Durham area. So, I took her to the Barbershop after reading the reviews at Yelp. There was practically no wait time. The cutting area is very private and the lady who did his hair was FANTASTIC. Her name is Holly and I highly recommend her. She was very accommodating and plain sweet. For $11.50 (if you're using a debit card) a man gets a hair cut, facial trim, hot towel, massage, shampoo and condition and gets to watch whatever they want on a personal TV in the station. Pretty sweet deal. I was VERY surprised at the amount of "extras" men get at The Barbershop. The prices and staff were excellent and it will be his go to place for haircuts from now on! When you find the right place and stylist, you go back. Since my work moved me out to Chapel Hill, The Guys' Place has become that place for me. Jenny is awesome and always gives me a great haircut. Consistency in a haircut is a key for me. The price is amazing for what you get. $12 (or $12.50 with credit card) for a cut, shampoo, DirecTv, private cubes, and massage is hard to beat. After my normal barbershop stopped opening on Saturday's, I had to go in search of a new one. After trying several, I stumbled on The Barbershop in Durham and decided to give them a try. I was shocked at the level of service that I received. The waiting area was neat and tidy, and was separated from work that was going on. Nice leather chairs (nicer than at home). Up to date editions of magazines, peanuts, coffee, and TV. It was not what I was expecting from a barbershop. The work areas were clean, and separated. While this cuts down on the amount of chair to chair conversation, it makes it easier to talk with the barber and get to know them a bit better. I forgot to mention it also cut down on the noise so that I could enjoy whatever TV show that I wanted to watch on my personal TV. Having a full beard, I don't get to enjoy that nice hot towel completely, but, I find it a way of relaxing any how. That, the shampoo, and the neck message are things that very nice. I would get my hair cut more often just to enjoy that. During my year long search, the best price that I could find in the area for a haircut was $16. I get a lot more for just $11.00. I've been four times this year, and this is now my "new" barbershop. read more

Essentially Sportsclips for under half the price. Some slight difference, like no giant massage chair in the back, but more comfortable seating up front, free coffee, a personal TV and more privacy at the chairs. It's hard to come close to even beating the price and they did a great job. read more
