The food is amazing but they never pick up the phone when you're trying to call in a order

My friend who I was with had been there when she was a child, but has not been back since. This was my first time. She took the time to explain the menu to us, and details about the items on the menu. The banana pudding is made with cinnamon graham crackers and dusted with cinnamon. It truly is a great twist on it and I love it. I did enjoy a hotdog with ketchup and mustard.hotdogs are an American staple I feel like, and Hot Dog King nailed these. They are simple, but a variety of toppings. I also had a side of fries. Their fries are nice, crispy and had a hint of grease, perfect. Angie brought out a sample of the BBQ and homemade coleslaw. I loved that she did that. I was nervous to try other things on the menu and she nailed it with a sample. The coleslaw was great. It was chopped up and a little runny, I like it just like that. The coleslaw was for sure packed with flavor. For me what would go well is some BBQ sauce. The funnel cake fries with a dusting of powder sugar so good! They can get hard if you get them to go because of the powder sugar. The shakes were creamy and made with soft serve. The corn dog, big and nice and crispy. The breading had a very mild sweet flavor and was cooked to perfection! Dipping that in mustard was the cherry on top. The interior had the whole hotdog theme down pat. They have been operating since 1972, a classic in the Hampton Roads area!

They also do burgers and brats, fries and exceptional onion rings and milk shakes. I sat at the counter overlooking the hot steel so I could enjoy the show in front of me. Most surprising was the cost for a very good frankfurter- $2.95 with a long list of toppings included. I went with the traditional brown mustard, relish and grilled onion bits put together by the masterful cooks, and added a long squirt of ketchup. Onion rings on the side and Pepsi for cool washdown. It was all a snack that put a smile on my face and a warmth in my stomach. Just enough snap from the dog, and a terrific greasy taste from the house made 'yuns. All the while I watched the cooks do their thing behind the counter and listened to their fun interaction. I even had a chat with Mrs. Gus, who was happy to have a new customer she could convince to become a regular. Loved her Greek accent. But for the fact that I lived 6 hours away in Pennsylvania, I would no doubt be a loyal regular. Still, with family in town, I have yet another great reason to return as often as possible to chow down! Five Stars for the grub and cultural satisfaction of a hot dog emporium than knows the way to keep an aficionado happy.
