To start off - the customer service was excellent. We got greeted by two different people, both asking how were and if we had any questions and to let them know when we were ready. We found that to be very welcoming and kind. The case was half empty, this was around noon. Not sure at what time they close because their Instagram just states they open at 11 with no closing time (not sure if that just means until they run out?) The prices tend to run the same for every single pastry from $6-$7 which I find to be unusual and not the best thing because as you can see at the bottom of the case- a small strawberry tart was $7 being the same price as a decent size turtle brownie or almost the same as a $6.50 strawberry scream (donut strawberry whipped pastry) just does not correlate. To have not prices that variate in the sizes of the pastries is a bad sign to me. It felt like the prices were high just because of the "name". The pastries were alright nothing amazing. We got 4 of them, one of them isn't pictured. We got the Strawberry Scream, a Hazelnut Crossaint, Turtle Brownie, and Rasberry Tart. The only thing me and my boyfriend liked to the point of finishing and worth the price in our opinion was the Strawberry Scream and the Turtle Brownie. The Grim Bakers came to be a brick and mortar store after winning a Halloween Baking Competition on The Food Network which is actually how I started following them. My wife and I stopped in to pick up some horror themed goodies to take to our son and his wife on New Year's Day. We got to meet Manny while we were there. The place is in the food court area of Wonderland of the Americas Mall. They didn't have a huge selection because of the holiday rush, but what they did have was great. We bought one of the lovers cookies. I really liked the design. We also bought some cupcakes and a lemon bar. We only got to try the cupcakes. We each had half of a vanilla one and a chocolate one. This little GEM is hidden and tucked away in wonderland mall. I had heard many great things via social media and word of mouth, so it was just a matter of time until I tried it. The location is great, it's easy to access and in the food court there's plenty of seating to devour your sweet treats if you cannot wait to get home. Now the service when ordering is super easy, people complain about the wait, but fail to realize it's only so many people working who are baking making coffee and taking orders, so WAIT people, give them a minute. The staff are really nice and are always more than willing to explain the treats! I've even talked to the owner who was on the holiday baking championship! Really nice people. Now, the pastries are on another level, you can taste the difference from here between mass created knock offs from chain bakeries. I've tried a handful of cupcakes, a particular favorite of mine is the strawberry crunch, it's a strawberry cake lovers dream! I've heard the coffee is not bad, it's nothing super special but hey, neither is Starbucks, besides the label. So give it a shot, support local and try many of their different items. As a lover of all things spooky, I had been looking forward to trying this place since it opened and finally had the chance to go. I was happy to support a fellow San Antonian's passion project. This bakery is in the food court at Mall of the Americas between Vicious Eats burgers and Spaceballs. Just seeing all their creative items was a feast for eyes! I loved the spooky touches to all the sweets, like skulls on top of their tarts or a Ghostface on an orange ice cream waffle cone. I bought a rice crispy chocolate Ouija board, turtle brownie and strawberry tart. The chef's kiss was that the planchette on the rice krispy treat was a separate chocolate piece. There were consistent long lines but they replenished their goodies at a great pace I thought. However, don't be surprised if you go and they are largely sold out, due to their popularity. I did not go in person so I can't comment on their service but only on their desserts. First the macarons.. my daughter loves macarons and she said they tasted like food coloring and they were super tiny for being $3 each. Secondly the cupcake was a good size and it did have filling so I guess that can account for the price point but the cake was just a tad dry the icing was whipped cream which I guess was ok and it had a strawberry on top which was also ok. There was an item that I thought was a croissant with whipped cream and strawberry filling but when I got it in person it was donut..I've never had a donut sandwich and I guess it was fine just wasn't expecting it to be a donut which made it way more sweet of a dessert than I hoped for. A few brownies and cupcakes. I got a strawberry shortcake cupcake and a their triple chocolate ice cream soft serve. Oh gosh. Hey listen, I didn't get a chance to take a pic of our goodies. We ate them too fast! My daughter and I went on a Saturday afternoon and they were still pretty well stocked. She was looking for the black heart cookie, "the lovers" to gift to her friend for her birthday. Upon arriving, we were glad to see that there were plenty in the case. I don't know what that one tasted like, but while I was there, I couldn't resist a "death by chocolate" cupcake. It was SO decadent but not overly sweet. It was perfect. This was the most over priced mid bakery I've ever been at in my life. Why was one ice cream cone SIXTEEN FUCKING DOLLARS?! SIXTEEN DOLLARS?!? As in $10 PLUS AN ADDITIONAL 6 dollars. For literally regular ice cream with food dye. And a giant chocolate mold that fell on the floor and made a mess everywhere within 2 minutes. So incredibly disappointed in this place. I haven't been on yelp in months but I had to jump back on for this rating. Because this was my first visit and I was back on my way home to Houston I played it safe and only ordered three items; two strawberry crunch cupcakes and one chocolate Bloody Mary cupcake. Half way home I opened the box and begin to dig in and hands down those were some on the best cupcakes I've ever had in my entire life. The location is in a dying mall so just be mindful of that and when we found the place, they only had slices of cake (which tasted good btw) and some m&m brownies for sale, but definitely nothing like their IG so maybe call ahead of time to see what they're selling that day before you make the drive and walk around the mall to find it (it's downstairs). Customer service was average, make sure to specifically ask for a coloring book for your kids otherwise they won't offer or bring it up. I noticed other people tried to bring up the lack of items on their social media but they delete comments including mine but it's only fair people like myself who go out of our way to their location have a heads up. This is the second time that I have been to this place. The first time I ordered an iced coffee it was the worst coffee I have ever had. It was tasteless and watered down. I went today. I ordered a iced latte with whole milk and white chocolate flavor.. I don't know what it is about this place. They just don't know how to make iced coffee.. went through the first time and thought maybe it was just my taste so I gave it a second shot this time I ordered a what I believe they call a crons. A fried croissant season like a doughnut.. it is the worst. It's cold. It's stale hard to chew like if it's been there for days. I will not be coming back here this please try to get you with decorations and fancy desserts. It is not worth the money now I see why it's in the mall that it's in other than another place. Do not come here. It is not worth it and the guy behind the counter. He had glasses with shoulder length black hair. I do not like giving bad reviews, however, I took my client there this morning and could not wait for their great croissants which were not ready; I told the girl that if I was still there when they were ready that I wanted one. I thought they were going to be the same croissants like the last time, plain and buttery. What does she charge me for? Two burnt chocolate croissants, even after I complained, her nonchalant attitude left a lot to be desired; she did not even offer a substitute or my money back; she just kept smiling as if I were talking to the wall. If she had shown me the croissant she had hurriedly placed in the box from the get go; I would have immediately told her I don't like chocolate. My only regret is not asking for the Manager or owner. The s'mores brownie was extremely dry and I wouldn't recommend definitely because it's almost $7. The birthday cake flavored cupcake was also so dry and very disappointing. I got every flavor macaroon and definitely tasted like the ones from Costco but I liked the printed design on them. The red velvet cupcake had the moisture but lacked the flavor. The icing was a questionable texture and flavor. I am giving 3 stars because I really enjoyed the iced latte. Would I drive 35 mins for the coffee? no. Employees are nice, its a gothic ambiance for sure, and i love that aspect. I got a $5 cupcake which was pretty good, unsure if $5 was worth it though. I'm all for supporting a small business, and I will come back to try again. My biggest complaint is that I ordered a coffee.. and I waited 30 minutes to recieve it. Miscommunication between the order taking and the making the coffee.. maybe? I sat in front of the shop 30 minutes for a SMALL coffee. While everyone else who ordered after us received their coffees. Was at the horror con today and my family always makes a point to stop by and support the grim baker. Ordered an ice cream for my daughter and the cashier coyly replied "you realize that's a 13 dollar ice cream. I felt judged but kept my optimism, I said sure not a problem. Didn't realize I was going to wait close to 20 minutes for a single order while others behind us received their orders before us. When I finally got the ice cream as soon as I turned around the candy ghost face fell off. I asked if I could get another. The owner came up and said they do tend to fall off but I can get you another but you will be put back in cue. I chose not to wait because of bad service. We've given them a lot of business from hellraiser birthday cakes to splurging on treats at the con.
