This is a tough place to review because it's a bit of a wildcard. As home to a hostel, the crowd can be mellow or party-like. There's not much of a locals scene, so it all depends on the travelers in house. The pub does host comedy acts and karaoke, so they help. I have, hoever, found some of the staff to be unfriendly. It could be 20% cooler with a bit more management.

The special we missed out on.

Decent pub that was fairly packed with people drinking beer. Some of our group wanted fish and chips, and upon seeing a fish and chips burger decided they could most likely get it without the burger. However, upon closer inspection, it was baked fish, not fried. The burgers were fairly small, which was OK with me. It was a good burger on fresh bread. I upgraded my fries to the spicy with blue cheese sauce, but there was so little blue cheese sauce, it was hardly worth it. The peppers were very hot, so I pulled them aside. There were an assortment of beers and a full bar. What was sad is that we did not see the small sign listing the daily special at the register, so make sure to check or ask. At least 2 of us would have ordered it instead. It was called the Sloppy Bastard, with chili. The seats were not the most comfortable, most having no back. There were TVs and earlier in the evening, I noticed no one else was eating, which made me wonder if we were in a good place. In the end, we were all happy with the choice. You order at the bar. For our group, they took all orders from each of us lining up at the bar. We then paid separately when we were done. It worked out very well. For a bit extra, you can have a bowl of peanuts. For a beer and a cheesy burger, I was set back just over 14 GBP. Also affiliated with this property is a youth hostel, so be prepared for a lot of young people coming and going with luggage. It was not an issue, and added to the entertainment!

I have been walking by this pub on my way home every day for over a year now but I never got in (mainly because no one else is around this area with me). However, I decided to give it a go on Sunday for lunch/dinner. The menu is very straightforward, half of it is burgers and half sharing platters. It also boasts one of the top 5 burgers in London. I decided to try the farmyard burger with beef, ham hock and duck egg. It is not possible to eat it with your hands so get those knife and form skills working. The burger also came with skin on chips which were quite nice. I have to say it was a challenge trying to finish it off because it was very filling. And I didn't need to eat anything else for the rest of the day. I will definitely be going back to try their christmas menu as the burgers with stuffing and venison sound awesome. In terms of drinks, I know that the pub gets quite busy in weeknights with people having a pint after work but I still think I would not go to it after dark. As I pass by it every day I have seen a fair amount of rowdy people so it's better to be there in the morning when the patrons are sober and won't start saying things as you walk by.. #girlproblems

The Juicy Bastard

I stayed in the Pub Love hostel with friends, so we decided to try out the pub below us. I ordered the juicy bastard burger, which was rated as one of the top 5 burgers in London. It was good, but I wouldn't say it was one of the best burgers i've ever had. The fries were good, as with the pale ale. If you stay in the hostel, you get 10% off your check which is nice. The service was very friendly, but you have to order and pay at the bar. I'm not sure if this is normal in London or not.

Mac and cheese burger

This is a great little pub close to where In was staying. I tried the mac and cheese burger with fries. They got the order slightly off, no biggie, but the mac n cheese was awful. I think it made the burger worse. The service was outstanding and the beer was fantastic. I highly recommend bringing your mates here for a pint, but skip the mac n cheese.

Great burgers. Nice ambience. Beats burgers and brew in a hotel (Metropole). Try the Madri lager. Quite good

Meh selection of beers, sub-mediocre staff, but convenient location to the tube. There are far better pubs in the neighbourhood, sorry.

It reminded me a bit of the fun days when I was living at a hostel for some time.

Flew in on a Sunday and arrived at my hotel around noon. Remarkable, he scored and I literally walked around the corner and saw the long line to get into the pub first. I was seated immediately, however, and proceeded to enjoy a traditional Sunday Roast. Room was very pleasant (there are so many I got lost returning to my table from a bio brake. Roast was very good ( but no Lawry's) and the sides excellent. Could not decide if my favorite was the roast potatoes (crispy outside soft inside) or the glazed carrots. Yorkshire pudding was good but again, I am to used to the Lawry's and this is a different style. Peas were, well, peas, but very fresh. The sticky toffee cake was excellent and the Guinness fresh, creamy and a proper pour. Good thing because the selection of winners by the glass and half bottles of wine were both a little thin. Overall wine list was good but I was alone and not up for drinking a full bottle by myself. Overall, very enjoyable and to judge by the crowd and difficulty in getting a reservation, one of the more popular in town.

The history alone makes it worth visiting, and the location is perfect if you're exploring the area. It feels very classic London in the best way. We stopped in for a pint and honestly... the whole after-work beer culture over there is something I really need to bring back with me to the States. The beer was great, the atmosphere was lively without feeling overwhelming, and it just felt like one of those places where people naturally gather and stay awhile. Definitely worth stopping into if you're in the area.

Two story space - the ground floor feature the bar and handles walk in lunch; the upstairs is a dining room for those with reservations. Fun fact, as part of the history, the pub used to be the host of bare knuckle fights and had regulars like Charles Dickens. Wildfarmed sourdough - served with whipped salted butter and Guinness butter. Well toasted bread and the butters with salt were well made. Fuller's London Pride marinated steak and ale pie - served with seasonal veggies and red wine gravy, as well as either mash potatoes or triple cooked chips. If there is one dish London does really well, it's their pies. It was beautifully made and loaded with steak. The red wine gravy was decadent and added a perfect amount of moisture to the pie. Triple cooked chips were perfectly crispy but fluffy on the inside. Corn fed chicken breast - served with garlic and sage butter, mash potato, cavolo nero, and crispy onions. Only took a bite of this as it was my partner's dish but the bite of chicken I had was very juicy and well seasoned.
