This little park was not something that I expected to see in this area but when you think about it,…read morethe idea is very smart and really serves a purpose for both tourists and locals. The below page from AB's website shows that this place is only two years old and that its $1.6 million dollar cost was done as a public/private partnership. I've been to many beaches up & down the east coast and I honestly can't think of an area that has something quite like this. atlanticbeach-nc.com/departments/parks-recreation/ ABTP offers the following: Free live music on Thursday nights from mid-June thru August. Free family friendly movies (with the exception of them showing Jaws last month which was an interesting choice with the shark attack that happened in June at Fort Macon) on Wednesday nights June thru August. Skate Park Splashpad Playground/swingset Basketball Court Minigolf for $5 per person and it's free for ages 6 and under The main building which sells snacks & concessions and has restrooms along with free Wifi. The concession area and the golf are open 10-10 daily and it goes without saying that they are closed along with things like the splashpad seasonally. Compared with beaches in New Jersey or Maryland, Atlantic Beach is very understated in the amenities that it offers but I don't think that is necessarily a detriment. If you want all the bells and whistles it's not that much further to go to Myrtle or head north to KDH or OCMD and you'll find what you're looking for. But if you want quiet and relaxed with a very nice small town "homey" feeling then this is the spot you want. A+

I dropped them off in the sand and headed for the sweet concrete love of a Team Pain park. Ledges, gaps, stairs, and goodies for skaters of all skill levels. I'd definitely come back. If the fam won't skate next time, there's a putt putt course just feet away. It's also right around the corner from Finch's Skate Shop, which I was lucky enough to find while we're here. Kudos to the good folks of Atlantic Beach for giving locals and tourists a solid skate spot.

It's the tallest living sand dune system on the East Coast, and the views from the top are amazing, especially at sunset. The visitor center has some neat exhibits about the history and ecology of the dunes, and the rangers are helpful with tips on where to go. People are out there flying kites or even taking hang gliding lessons, which makes it a lively place. Admission is free and it's a unique experience you don't want to miss.

There are amazing sand dunes, where you can literally go fly a kite! Not for the faint of heart or the tired of legs, be ready for the weather and to climb dunes. There is a lookout at the end of a boardwalk area if you just want to take a few quick pictures. If you need a kite, Kitty Hawk Kites has a small shop at the park to grab some essentials. You can also skate down the dunes if you're adventurous. We had so much sand covering us once we got back in the car but it was 100% worth it. They do have a rinse off spot next to the welcome center/restrooms. Pro tip: baby powder will help you brush off sand once you're ready to head home

This year we decided to try something new and I have a feeling it's gonna be our new spot for the next few years to come. The beach is clean, has easy access from the car, there are public restrooms, and it is big enough for many people to share. There are picnic tables, but you may want to bring your own seats. I'd suggest beach umbrellas also if you want any type of shade. Since it is the sound side, there are no waves and it is 1-2' deep almost everywhere. Check out my pictures for how far out we were and we could have kept going. This was a really fun day, we brought inner tubes and did a lot of floating. People were also jet skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and sail boarding as well. The place is big so we never felt crowded at all. A+ day.

You can head to a couple different areas, but the most popular is the trail right by the visitor center. Sometimes parking is difficult because people park to go to the beach, so bring some patience. The bathrooms have flush toilets but no sinks, so plan ahead if you'd like a nicer bathroom experience. The visitor's center has tons of educational information along with very informed staff. You can learn about where to go and even borrow binoculars to look for birds. There's a small gift shop as well. The path leading from the visitors center passes two large marshy fields and ends with a large tower overlooking more marshes. Bring binoculars- it's so fun to be able to watch the birds poke around in the sand, interact with each other, and sleep. The beginning of the path has a small pond filled with turtles as well that are fun to watch. Even if you're not a big bird fan, it's a beautiful area for a nice walk. You can spend time going to more of the refuge and, of course, you can go to the beach as well.

Without question, the boardwalk and piers are the centerpiece of the property, measuring over 4,000 feet long and ten feet wide. You can take some beautiful photos of the boardwalk hovering over the water or silhouetted against the sky. The scenery along the boardwalk is gorgeous with pretty views of the Sound, sand dunes, fallen trees, and seagrass. We saw plenty of people taking advantage of the beautiful weather and simply strolling along the boardwalk or ducking into stores, bars, and restaurants, or relaxing on one of the twenty-one benches. I even saw a large bird (maybe a hawk or eagle or condor?) sweeping along the tree line and walking in the woods. anyone know what this is? https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/duck-town-park-and-boardwalk-kitty-hawk?select=JptpdCQdvEtdn_g0CL2tpw&userid=cVrM2BvOvPV0Vi_rC8kepQ We had such a nice relaxing time just wandering around the boardwalk and ducking into the occasional store or shop.
