The GOOD: Awesome dance space Super air-conditioned Fun Great music Super great crowd Easy parking Affordable The Bad: It is REALLY crowded, sardine style Technique and the safety basics must come first in my mind. Especially with salsa turns. It is key that the lead learn how to safely twirl your lady! This was a level 1 class and there were no safety or etiquette instructions. Both are instrumental in learning how to be a great salsa dancer! We are definitely coming back, but will supplement with more formal lessons with less people. Pros: The classes are great, and the instructor was fun. I tried the bachata class and enjoyed it. Con: NOT a place for single ladies unless you're into the older ( over 50+) crowd of men. The upstairs bachata room is hot and smelly, not fun at all. The salsa area downstairs is nice, but again, much older men will ask you to dance. And the outside patio was small and boring - a disappointment. read more

Parking is abundant. I just took bachata class tonight. Yes, lots of quirky people but it's a good time. Don't come in expecting to leave as Jennifer Lopez. Just have fun :) Classes follow a basic format: Teacher shows basic dance move Class follows Adds something Class follows Adds something Class follows Class forms a circle Girls rotate guy to guy and dance sequence Every complete rotation, a new dance move is added. Around 5 major dance moves to a sequence. Big tip: call in to confirm class schedules. I'm Asian and rhythmically challenged. If I can do it, so can you. Would I return: yes but $15 is steep for one class. Maybe not an "every week" activity but once in awhile I'll return. read more

My friends started coming here for dance class and invited me to join a Bachata introductory class. It was amazing and so much fun. Since then I've been going weekly twice a week for both Bachata and Salsa. They have alot of different classes just look on their website for their schedule. Lots of great and friendly dance instructors. Hector has been a great instructor. He makes the class fun for everyone. Some people are scared to try just cause they're shy and they have to dance with other people. Don't worry, the classes are created so you can dance with everyone but it's not so long that it's awkward. It's important that you get a feel for all differet types of dancer. Also if you just want to dance with your partner that is also fine! You just say pass when people rotate. The best part of coming here is that every Tuesday and Friday the dance studio get's turned into a club at night. So you take a class and then go practice it out with other people. All the people who come are generally pretty friendly and willing to dance with you even if you are new. Some will even teach you some new moves. Theres are 3 bars and 2 dance rooms on Friday. There's something for everyone. There wasn't a really big dress code enforcement. Most people just wear something confortable. If you're trying to impress then I sugguest you dress to impress. :) read more

NOT A PLACE TO LOOK FOR YOUR POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANT OTHERS but other than that the night was fun and I got to learn new dances. The crowd is majority 40+ and they are skilled dancer. Came here with my friends for a girl night out and left wrenched in the heaviness of cologne. The older men are very patient of teaching me, but it gets uncomfortable at times because there are a lot of close face-face or body to body interaction. Maybe salsa isn't for me because I need my own personal space. The cover charge is $10 after 9. That's when they dim the light and turn the place into a dance floor. The dancing classes are different from those other dance studios like Arthur Murry. The teachers actually teach you how to dance and not look like a beginner. I started the beginning salsa classes a year ago and I can now actually dance. Honestly, I am a person with 2 left feet and am not graceful or rhythmic in movement. But I can actually dance and look normal. The teachers for this class is a husband and wife team, Terryl & Enio. They are very patience and excellent teachers. They throw in some jokes (sometimes a little less funny hearing that more than once though) and are good at what they do. They have won numerous awards and are recognized in the salsa and ballroom dancing world. As for the Saturday classes, I am surprised that there are a lot of people here for a Saturday afternoon. There is also a pretty good male to female ratio. On Tuesday nights, there is a good number of people there as well and a fair male to female ratio as well. Each week, you learn a few steps and build upon whatever you learned last week (make sure you practice). The first half of the class, you do the warm up routine and learn the new steps to add to your already learned routine. Then after that you dance w/ the male (or female) you happen to be standing in front of and then rotate. At first, I thought dancing with other people would be scary. I really am intimidated by dancing. But you actually learn to dance better and feel more comfortable dancing w/ someone else. In this class, there are a lot of students that are more experienced and so you dance better w/ them (well holds true for me since I am a female. The female just has to follow. I feel sorry for the guys who have to learn all the moves). Everyone of the students I've danced with have been very nice and patience. I look forward to this new month of more salsa dancing class. Every month, the classes start fresh again. After the salsa class on Saturdays, students are welcomed to stay to practice and dance to salsa music. On Tuesday nights, you can stay and watch the dancing class after and then stay for the practice dancing as well. This place offers other dance classes as well (ballroom, cha cha, bachata, tango, etc) and I'm sure I would learn to dance those styles as well. If I can learn to dance, so can you. So don't be intimidated like me, what are you waiting for? Grab your dancing shoes (preferable real dancing shoes that you buy at a dance store... will be easier on your knees and easier for you to spin) and go for it! Oh and just had to mention that it's a nice touch that there are breath mints in the restroom (both men and women) to help freshen your breath since dancing is for getting close to someone. read more

The wife and I are taking salsa lessons, and this is the perfect place. Vanessa is a great instructor and knows how to teach. We are in the beginners class, and the space is great for some dance studio action. From the basic to the cha cha cha, to the cumbia, you are able to soak up what you learned and hit the dance floor. I absolutely love this place. I come here almost every Tuesday (salsa dancing). The instructors are so patient and talented, which made it a great experience when I first started. I highly recommend taking the class before the night club opens up if you are a beginner. However, no one is turned away and everyone is welcoming. The Granada is known for it's Salsa and Bachata lessons and dances. I'm from Bakersfield and the salsa people here know about it and plan road trips there to dance. I've been there on several occasions for West Coast Swing Dance "Where's Westie" dance parties, but haven't made it down to salsa yet. I found the wood floors very easy to dance and spin on, and the sound system more than adequate to provide music to dance to. There is a full bar downstairs and I believe there was another one upstairs, too. Very few dance studios have bars which can serve alcohol, so this place straddles both categories: dance studio and dance club. I believe that I read that it has been voted best place to hear live music more than once! The floor to ceiling windows in the downstairs room are nice too. They let in a lot of natural light during the day, and passersby enjoy stopping to look in and watch the dancing. My only suggestion would be to turn the air conditioning up higher. On each occasion I have been here it has gotten so hot inside that we are all sweating like crazy. I even noticed water condensing on the inside of the windows, so I know it was pretty humid in there as well as hot. Other than that, I'd probably have given them 5 stars for being so many different things to so many different people! read more

I've been going to The Granada for almost a decade now. I've never reviewed it, but now it deserves it. Last night was the best night in all of the years I've been there. Love La Granada! The music is great on a Saturday night and there's such a fun atmosphere! The only con is that the bachata room feels like a steam room as soon as you walk in. Our party had to skip that room although we love bachata. read more

I have been looking around for a salsa dance studio to attend to practice my wedding dance. Im a student at Sonata Room, la puente recreation center, and trying out latin dance pro in pasadena. So far, the granada is the worst. Typically, these dance studios give you the first lesson free. As I have done my research, this is typically the norm. I called ahead and asked if we can have a trial lesson to see if we like it. The lady says Yes and come for the first session of the beginner series. I went to give it a try. There is a very lady at the front desk who insisted that I pay the cover charge which goes toward the $118 which is 1 free private lesson and 6 lessons. I stated, the lady promised I get a free trial. Then she started yelling and says she will let me have the free lesson but I need to buy the... so and so. so... this is how the day got started. And of course I didn't pay. Then, the intermediate session went over time and into the beginner time ( 20 mins) The instructor said he will make up for the time. And of course he didn't. Then the instructor was nice, pleasant but went really fast for a first series of beginner sessions. Many students were complaining. He said, He will explain it later, after class, and he can do private lessons. Now, boys and girls, this is what I call a tactic. He is heavily pushing for private lessons, giving you a dance lesson and not really showing the details. Then when you ask him, he says he will answer the questions later... then, asking if u want to do private lessons. The overall decor is old school and night clubish. I would AVOID this place at all costs! Unfriendly, dingy, with crappy instructors and pushy sales tactics! On the other hand... my experience at Sonata Room has been amazing, the instructors at the recreation center is methodical... and I found tons of other classes for cheaper and higher reviews. This review is for the "Ballroom Dinner Dance" on Sundays, 9/15/2019. PROs 1) Large dance floor. 2) Can buy drinks and food (food purchase mandatory for those sitting in a booth). Free cool water dispenser with cups. 3) The dance visitors on that night were generally pretty good dancers. 4) Some live music. The musician breaks were DJ'd music. Music itself was decent. CONs 1) For being billed as "Ballroom", it was only about 50% ballroom music to dance to. The rest was a mix of nightclub/social styles--Salsa, WCS, NC2S, Bachata, Cowboy Waltz, Country 2-Step, etc. Not great if you want to stick to traditional ballroom. If that's the music being offered, then change the name to "Ballroom and Social Dancing". 2) The smoky odor coming from the kitchen was overwhelming. It was the smell of cooking oil being overheated to the smoke point, not food actually burning. It was greatest while they were serving meals and made it difficult to breathe. I believe the odor was from the deep fryer being too hot and/or not properly ventilated outdoors. I asked the person at the front check-in if there was something they could do, and she said she was sure it was ventilated, and there's nothing they could do about it, except possibly turn the fans off on the 2nd floor that were being used to cool the dancers downstairs. Well, it was a hot summer night, so I guess no. Also, just because the kitchen has a ventilator doesn't mean it's working optimally for all that deep frying they are doing (French fries, chicken fingers, etc.). 3) The time advertised was supposed to end at 9pm. They stopped playing a bit early. I was hoping to dance until the end, since that's when the crowd thinned out and there's more space on the floor, but I guess they don't care about the dancers who paid for dancing until 9. Also, if you bring a hired dance host, you won't get your full money's worth. 4) No "mixer" dances offered, which usually gets you acquainted with different dancers. Summary--there are better places to go if you want a Ballroom experience, especially without the smell of overheating oil. * * * read more

I've been taking lessons at La Granada for quite a while. The instructors are great and can be comical in class, which puts students at ease when they're nervous or shy. Some students can be uptight as they try to correct you or back lead. However, I've been taking classes long enough were I no longer allow the back lead. I'm confident in what the instructors have taught me. Take a chance and enjoy the teachings of Vanessa, Hector or Bridget. You won't regret it. read more

Great spot to go on a date! Cover is a expensive for me personally ($15-20) depending on the day, but worth it. I really like how La Granada opens up 3 dance floors with different type of music (Salsa, Bachata, Hip Hop and Reggaeton). I believe this is only on Saturdays. Live music is the best. The service sucks, I went the first time for dance class there , and I put my drinks and personal belongs on the table. When I finish my class, my stuff was moved and they throw away my drink. I would maybe go back. I really liked that I didn't feel like I was getting oogled, but then, I am more of a 'gringa' than most of the women there. I dressed in flats because I was traveling and didn't expect to go out, but the women all had stilettos and/or heels. The music was LOUD, my ears were ringing when I left. The Salsa floor can be a bit intimidating a was pretty full, but outside they played some hip hop with a DJ. Reasonably priced from the cover to the drinks, it seems to me, but I only ordered a beer and water. I had plenty of dance partners, so that was fun. Some good looking guys, if you are single, others not so much. Good mix of ages, too. read more

Worse experience ever,the website said they play salsa bachata merengue and cumbia,i thought it was a well balance mix. The bottom floor was playing salsa the top floor bachata, after listening to salsa for 1 1/2 hours we decide to go upstair they were playing bachata for the same amount of time, we ask the dj for cumbias he said we dont play cumbias,we ask for merenguen instead and he play 2 songs and that was it he was not goin to play anymore,we went downstairs the live salsa band was just finishing, then the dj started to play not cumbia not merengue they started with bachata, we were like wtf they have bachata in the 3 floor, my wife decided to go ask the dj to play cumbias, he said i will play 1 cumbia at the end of the night. A place that charged us 15 dollars cover charge an 12 dollar drink really sucks. read more

First time visit. Brought my husband for his birthday, what a great place for dancing salsa, bachata, and merenge. From security, female manager, salsa and bachata instructors all were very professional, They made it a great experience. Unfortunately, I gave it three stars due to the phone staff not informing me that reservation for tables were taken upon request. This was three weeks prior to my visit, the outside patio DJ was suppose to have played top 40 hip hop and never heard once played during the three and half hours I was there. This place is great. I've been dancing for years and this is one of my favorite places. The only reasons it doesn't get 5 stars is because it doesn't always have a great dj. Some times they have djs who shouldn't be djs playing. Another thing I don't like is if they have a bachata room why in the he'll do they play bachata in the main room. Also, little by little they've been raising their prices, I just hope they're paying their bands more too. read more

I took the Salsa I Tuesday class and was a bit nervous at first but I easily met other newbies who were friendly. The instructors, a couple, were really amazing. They made all the steps simple and easy to follow. When it came time to partner up, the instructors made light of how close we had to get with strangers and gave individual pointers for better technique. I can not rave enough about the them. They are both funny and friendly. I really enjoyed how they gave a bit of history of salsa dancing. They really know what they are doing. I will need a lot of practice, as my partner skills were not all that easy for me but I know some of the basic, thanks to the lessons. Plus, the The Granada is a great place to practice dancing since they have a club atmosphere after the class. I danced with 6 different people all of which had very different styles and were patient with my new skills. I will certainly go back to practice practice practice. Maybe one day I will be as great as the 2 couples I saw out there. Wow! They were amazing! Thanks to The Granada, I had one of the best times I've had in a long while. read more
