Cheap drinks as well, and it's 50p for a game of pool. You can also play darts if you want, or just sit there, relax and have a brew. They have a beers garden, and in the afternoon there are a lot of people around smoking and chatting. It's a Joseph Holt pub, so of course, some Manchester Ales can be found, like Maple Moon for instance. Very good beer, I recommend it. All in all, the staff was really friendly. As long as it's not busy, this pub is actually nicer than I've expected. Yeah, I'll probably go there again.

Lady behind bar was friendly, played the football scratch card which helps for the free food at half time. Only one screen with limited volume. Cute girls sat around pretending to watch the game and plenty of regulars you will most likely see on a regular basis. A crazy landlady who obviously doesn't take the slightest s*** from anybody. Would I return again ? ABSOLUTELY. Pubs like this are a die'ing breed. If people don't visit them and give the support they should have then it will just be another apartment block for developers. Sam Platts delivered. It was a ticketed event and was sold out, but the fellas at the door took a liking to my friend and I, reckoning that we'd be the only foreigners inside and impressed that we'd made the trip, so they let us in. Two hours before the game, the chants were already deafening. We stood in the tented beer garden, where the game was projected on a big screen. When Rooney scored, the explosion of hollering and beer was truly deafening. The only shame was that Barcelona had to go and win (leading to a lot of beers being thrown at the screen). Chant of the evening: "He'll shag who he wants! He'll shag who he waaaaants! Our boy Giggsy, he'll shag who he wants!"

Its actually (just) my least favorite of the three, but still deserves its five stars. I have seen football matches at many a stadium across the country but these three United pubs have definitely the most passionate fan-base that I have witnessed. Every game from several hours before the game to five minutes before kick off these pubs are full of fans chanting and celebrating in advance in passionate style, with hilarious songs, chants and banter. Sam Platts has got the best garden area of the pubs around here, so perhaps in the summer months this would be the pick of the United pubs. This beer garden as got a little bar where you can buy cans of beer and get plastic cups, saving those less fussy from the extreme queue inside. Its also very close to a different side of the stadium to The Trafford and Bishops Blaize, so depending where your seats are, it may be the best place for you to ensure maximum drinking time pre-kick off. Quality.

First of all, how loud does the music have to be in order for them to legally have to provide free ear plugs? I guess I'm showing my age now but I just couldn't hear myself think in here - so I was unable to decide what I wanted when I walked in (aside from the nearest exit). I used to drink in here several times a week, when I worked at Rock Radio round the corner. This was an institution to be reckoned with, back in the day and it was known as the Exchange Bar and Grill. Now I don't know what to call it as there are signs saying both 'Matchstick Man' and 'Hungry Horse'. Don't think the staff know either but it's turned into some sort of chav-den better suited to the back streets of Blackpool, full of women wearing underwear two-sizes-too-small and blokes with tattooed faces. It's obviously become a haven for the deadbeats drifting in from the nearby estate. So yes, it was an unpleasant half hour, while I waited for my pal to drain her glass. The DJ talked over most of the horrendous tunage that was blasting through the speakers and my tram couldn't come quickly enough. If you want a relaxing drink and conversation where you don't have to shout across the table, just keep walking and head to The Dockyard.

In fact, my personal preference is this one, though being a huge Manchester United fan, I give all three 5 stars. This is a Wetherspoons pub, though you wouldn't know it on a match-day. Its jam packed with passionate Manchester United fans chanting and singing fantastic and hilarious Manchester United songs for the few hours leading up to kick off. Here they even have a famous guy who leads the chanting, standing on a table bellowing out the tunes to get everyone started. Great cold beers as well, perfect for the pre-match banter! You can have a swift one or two to celebrate the inevitable United win after the game too, but only till 11pm. Its got a history too, as The first Bishop Blaize inn, named after the patron saint of woolcombers, was recorded here in the mid 15th century. Though this was demolished in 1863, it still bears the name today. The only thing is, you have to show your season ticket to get in so you can't come in if you're not a massive fan!

The surrounding new build flats aren't the prettiest but it's worth making a special trip to enjoy a pint and a bit of culture in this charming boozer. A grand looking, red brick building with several floors, The King's Arms has been lovingly nurtured and restored back to life by current manager Jon Cooper. There's a community theatre company and a collective of visual artists and photographers based on the top floor and a performance area for local and visting bands on the first floor. There's free folk and jazz gigs every Wednesday and Greek /Klezma musicians every Thurs. There's also occasional film screenings, poetry readings and community benefits. The reason I love The King's Arms so much however, is for their gorgeous bar with comfy leather seating, high ornate ceiling and worn wooden tables. The bar staff are as welcoming as the decor and whenever I've been there's always been something cool on the stereo from Serge Gainsbourg to The Shangra Las. The fact they also serve great ales, beers, spirits and warm drinks at reasonable prices is what makes it one of Manchester's coolest drinking dens! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-52UnhQhu8
