I paid for a "suite" thinking my experience would be better than standard. Not so much. Here are the things I experienced in my "remodeled suite": trash still in the waste basket, dirty coffee pot, dirty bathroom floor & used shampoo bottle in the shower. It wasn't until after my shower I realized the floor - the entire room of carpet was wet/damp. I never walk around a hotel room without socks on, so after my shower & a fresh pair off socks.... it was only a few minutes until I realized that my feet were wet! Over all, the room was not clean. Why didn't I request a room change? The hotel was completely booked and it was freezing cold so packing up after a shower & going out in the cold was a no go for me. Trust me, I checked the sheets before I got in bed. They were clean.

We got a suite thinking it would be nicer. It was NOT. We walked in and it immediately smelled so strongly of cigarettes. Then upon further look there was a missing light switch. The bathroom light didn't work. The bathroom floor was wet, not in a just-been-cleaned way. There was a disgusting stain on the top sheet. The bedside table had crumbs, dust, and something sticky. The bath mat had a cig burn in it. I'm not asking for much when staying at a quality inn, however, I am asking for the bare minimum of cleanliness. Would've drove the extra 15 minutes for literally anything else.

The main reservation is located on Highway 16, west of Philadelphia, MS. Pockets of their tribe live in the surrounding area, ownership which became part of the reservation. Innovation & vision by a businessman elected Tribal Chief led to construction of the Silver Star Casino & Hotel, which opened in 1994. A portion of the profits went back to tribal members, which immediately raised their standard of living. Choctaw Central, the school system for the reservation, immediately attracted the best teachers with the high salaries. Not only did the casino provide jobs for the reservation, it also provided well paying jobs for the surrounding small towns. Driving down the rural road in Mississippi, as one would approach the Silver Star, it felt like you were entering the "Twilight Zone". (Are any of you young enough to remember that TV series?). In the midst of rural land there stood a glitzy Las Vegas style casino & hotel with a marquee featuring big name talent. Life had changed for Neshoba & Newton counties. Entertainment was provided for east central Mississippi & western Alabama. I remember driving around the parking lot just to see the license plate locations of the people who had come to gamble. Busses were sent to towns for day trips to the casino. Limos were sent to the casinos on the Mississippi River to pick up high rollers. The reservation is not considered a part of the county. So liquor became available in the dry Neshoba County. Upscale restaurants surround the casino floor. But I love the buffet, which offers all you can eat homestyle Southern Cooking. Breakfast is phenomenal at the buffet. Shopping is located in the area between the hotel & casino floor. A Spa provides an additional amenity. Since we own my Grandfather's home & farmland about 15 minutes south, the draw of the casino floor became old. We would go for food & entertainment, some of which was located in stage areas on the casino floor. Once parking behind the Neshoba house after driving back from my Mother's house in town, we could see the laser show at the casino vividly in the rural darkness. My late husband, who wasn't familiar with the area, thought it was a UFO. :) Over the years the area has expanded. The Golden Moon was built across the road from the Silver Star providing new restaurants and a bar in the dome atop the structure where you can view a lot of Neshoba County. Additions also include 2 championship golf courses and a water park. In recent years a smaller Casino was opened in southern Mississippi. Another is planned for Louisville, MS. The complex is now called Pearl River Resort & the reservation is Choctaw, MS. After the majority of the tribe was forced to relocate to Oklahoma in the 1820's by the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, the remaining indigenous population deserves this prosperity.

This hotel checked both boxes and since I have stayed in Columbus many times in the past, I was looking for something new. In the last year or so, I have slowly been reintroduced to the Wyndham brand and furthermore, the La Quinta brand itself. Many moons ago in the '90s, La Qunita was my goto as I had a hotel budget for business trips and often stayed in some rather not so great La Quinta properties around the US. Fast forward to the modern era, I have decided to give this brand another shot and its hotels like the MSU La Quinta that make the decision easier. The MSU location is one of the great examples of where this brand is going. The new-look La Quintas such as this one is modern, bright, with more amenities to cater to the business, conference and family crowd of hotel visitors. I found this hotel had a great welcoming decor in the lobby and the guest areas on the first floor. The fresh complimentary coffee and lemon water were a nice touch. The fitness center was also very pleasing as it had enough modern equipment to get a good workout in. The gym was clean, the equipment newer and functional, with the extras needed for various types of workouts. My room layout was quite pleasing as it had two sections, one where the bed is and two, an archway separating the sleeping area from the living room area, which gave the room the feel of a larger space. The bed was big and comfortable, there was enough room on the desk for a laptop and other electronics. The room had a Cubey in it so, there were some extra ports to plug in my phone and other USB ported items. The rooms wifi signal was strong with very little lagtime which is a must for the business traveller. In the large and spotless bathroom, all the towels and accessories were neatly laid out and tidy. I was able to have a long, hot shower after a workout in the gym. The breakfast area was another great feature as there was plenty of room for multiple guests to sit down and eat. The food choices consisted of hot and cold cereals, oatmeal, and fresh bread, bagels, and pastries. The hot food had many choices as well, so you won't go away hungry after visiting the breakfast area. The staff are very attentive and clean up and replenish the food quickly. To conclude, this was a very good stay, in a well-managed hotel. The money I paid for my one-night stay, it was worth every dollar. This is a great choice if you're in the area, I can't see why anyone would be disappointed.
