Even though we didn't see many butterflies this time, the visit was still wonderful. The greenhouse is full of beautiful flowers and the landscaping is very well done. It's such a peaceful and relaxing place to walk around. We also bought a lemon tree, which became a lovely gift for our daughter. Highly recommend visiting. It was challenging to concentrate with the frigid room temp and the poorly lit room. All food and drinks were brought in by separate vendors, so there was no water or warm beverages available on site. There was an old water fountain that barely spewed water, but it looked sketchy. The location was gorgeous--both inside and out. Restrooms were clean and well stocked. Several areas were off limits to viewing, but the mansion was in great shape for being built in 1900/1910. The only downside was poor insulation. Also, after spending four hours shivering alongside my coworkers, I noticed that an employee had left an exterior door opened about 2-3 inches right outside our meeting room. Also, the chairs we sat in for eight hours were very uncomfortable. For 30-40°F outdoor temperature, this was completely unacceptable and very uncomfortable. If you have an event during the colder months, wear lots and lots of layers and bring your own food and drinks!

So a quick Yelp search (and a perusal of a DrinkKY brochure conveniently kept in the car) we figured out we could make a stop at Castle Hill Winery on the way. As we were walking up, the gentleman on a riding lawnmower hopped off to greet us and take us inside for our tasting. He is the owner and the winemaker and a regular Chatty Cathy! Super friendly and ready to talk about anything and everything. Including his wines! The wine tasting costs $1 per sample (you try 6 of the wines, it costs you $6). And the wines run $15 per bottle. Which is pretty reasonable, in my Kentucky-wine drinking experience. I tried several wines and enjoyed them. I ended up also buying a bottle of the strawberry wine to take home. The fruit wines are sweet without being syrupy. I really liked them. The venue is lovely. Nice outdoor space with a lot of green and seating options. It looks like a lovely place to have a wedding or private event. I would highly recommend a visit here. The only draw back is that I don't think they have a working credit card reader. They accept credit card payments, but will be processing them the old fashioned way...hand-writing out your receipt, taking your card information down, and processing it all....later. So, if you are planning ahead for a visit here, I would recommend bringing cash.

We recently attended a…read morewedding here, and were stunned at how beautiful the house and property were - perfectly suited for a ceremony, reception, and a number of other events one might one want to host. The exterior feels like a combination of The Secret Garden and Alice in Wonderland, but the curious historian in me would love to know the story of the gorgeous Italianate house. I hope to return for a better look around someday!
