Good experience overall. First, the place is a little hard to find because it's in a large building with lot of businesses- even when you get inside the building it's hard to find lol. They explained the whole process well and let us take our time decorating. There were lots of glass shapes to choose from. In addition, there were lots of glass colors and glass sprinkles. The workers were nice overall (the youngest woman was very accommodating and kind) but some of them were a little too blunt. My friend was taking his glass off his piece (he didn't glue it yet) and one of the women said "you don't want to do that! That's wrong" very suddenly. It was very strange.

So to keep it simple, if you've ever been to one of those make your own pottery type of places (I for one have not as I don't care one bit about art-artsy-artsy fartsy things) this is the same idea just that you're going to be working with glass. While classes are offered and while TGP is on Groupon with a deal we kept it simple by just showing up to do one of their walk-in projects. The basic gist for a walk in visit is you show up, look around at the examples of what others have done, hopefully get inspired, get a brief lesson in how to cut/break off small pieces of glass and away you go. The only real guidelines are that you have to pick a basic pattern/design like a large square which could be used as a bowl or a circle for a plate. There are different sizes ranging mostly from 5 inches to 12 inches. Pretty much it's only needing to pick a size and what colors of glass that are available which are the limiting factors. After that you let your imagination take over. When you're done the pieces are eventually fired in a kiln and if you live in the area you can pick them up in a few days. If not they'll ship anywhere and at least for us that took two weeks until we got our finished products. The lovely wife and I abstained instead opting to let the children do pieces simply because while the process/experience is fun it can get costly in a hurry depending what size you pick plus the shipping. I included the before pictures and somewhere I have the after pictures but their website has a lot of finished product pictures which show you what is possible. So if you go, ignore the fact that the studio is not the easiest to find in the building that they're in, everything can get costly depending on the piece you do/how many you're doing in your party and that parking can be a bit of a challenge because the experience is fun, the owners are both passionate about glass/make sure that you are having a good time and more than likely artsy or not, you'll enjoy the experience. (They're open Tuesday-Saturday 10-6 and Sunday from 10-5.)

*UPDATE* Got our pieces a few days ago and they turned out exactly how we thought they would, beautiful.

Cara and Maria are a mother/daughter team running the shop. They clearly love what they're doing and are super helpful and knowledgeable. Great for a walk in project or sign up for a glass. It's super fun.

We loved making pencil holders, sun catchers and dip bowls by fusing glass. The mother -daughter team are full of knowledge and so helpful.

All they cared about was money and quite frankly didn't care about their staff either. the only thing that kept me in America at that time was the awesome people of Charlottesville that i met while at camp. also, the food that they served us was lower quality than prison food, i wouldn't of fed it to my dead dog it was that nutritionally and tastefully bland!!!! even the cooks which i did like as they were just normal sound people said that everything that came in was the worst quality food they have every seen, we did an overnight once every week to 2 weeks and they fed the kids slop! us as staff would have to pay for are own food most days due to the sickness we would feel after eating the food they had provided for us. i will honestly never do camp America again as Triple C Camp has tainted my view on that experience! i honestly felt belittled and looked down at by the senior management staff at Triple C Camp and would not recommend anyone to work at their camp unless they change their ideas and how they treat their staff. I was so scared to say anything to management about how they treated us as they had the power to fire us on the spot which in turn would cancel are visa with immediate effect which would result in a five year ban from the USA and would make it impossible to get a green card in the future.

Our family had a very poor experience with Aloha Mind Math in Charlottesville, VA, managed by Biju…read moreand Ashwati. When we first enrolled our daughter about seven months ago, they were friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, that changed quickly. After the initial weeks, our daughter was assigned to different instructors, and the quality of teaching and communication declined significantly. We had particularly unpleasant interactions with Ms. Sejal. She often gave feedback to students in front of other parents, which felt unprofessional and embarrassing for the kids. When I politely raised concerns about this, her behavior toward my daughter noticeably changed. She began openly comparing her to other students and making discouraging remarks like "learn from them," which I found completely inappropriate. When we approached the owners to request a teacher change, they asked for detailed explanations--which we provided--but ultimately did nothing to resolve the issue. The pricing is also extremely high: around $300 per month for two subjects, plus a registration fee of about $130. They also charge a "security deposit" equal to a full month's tuition, which is very unusual for a tutoring service. On top of that, they require auto-draft payments--meaning you must be very proactive in stopping payments if you choose to end services. For the quality of instruction and the lack of support, the cost simply doesn't match the value. Scheduling is another major issue. They follow the public school calendar, so if your child attends on Mondays or Fridays, expect frequent cancellations due to holidays. When you ask for make-up sessions, they cite the number of classes "included" in the monthly fee--information that was never disclosed clearly when we enrolled. Despite charging monthly, they cap the number of sessions per month, and you only realize that once you try to reschedule. They also frequently rescheduled our daughter's sessions at their convenience, but when we needed to adjust the schedule, getting a makeup session was difficult. Communication from the owners was consistently poor. There were multiple instances where messages went unanswered for days. In one situation, I was actually waiting for Ms. Ashwati to discuss an issue, but she simply walked away after speaking with two other parents. It felt extremely disrespectful and dismissive. Ironically, the only time they responded quickly was when I emailed to cancel and stop the automatic drafts from my account. Overall, our experience was stressful, disappointing, and not at all what we expected. I would not recommend this center, especially given the high fees and lack of professionalism.

Eventhough he was an A student we enrolled him in this class so he could challenge and develop his mind further. He has been using his aloha math to solve difficult math problems in school faster then his classmates. He comes home with a smile on his face if he beat his opponent in a math challege. His teacher Ashwati N is very accomodating, patient, caring. She takes pride in her students progress and spends more time with them after class if they need more help. I am a former Student at Oakland School. Neither my parents nor I were impressed…read more My Review and thoughts on this school: Dump! Social Services should shut this place down for numerous, obvious reasons upon a closer look at this place or residing or working at this place. I am surprised they haven't yet just well done that. This place couldn't have possibly passed inspections when I was there and was deplorable. I have heard through credible sources there has been no improvement over the years! I attended this school for two consecutive years and it was an absolute joke for a boarding school especially considering the annual price. Student living/residential conditions are extremely poor. Additionally no air conditioning in the hot sweltering southern summers with some students residing in a trailer plus not well vetted dorm counselors or faculty. I have attended considerably better schools following this terrible experience at this lousy place and graduated high school valedictorian with no credit to my experience at this school. I then graduated with a double bachelor of science degree in Communicative Disorders, BS, and Psychology, BS, and I am now a master's degree student at a prestigious university ranked right under Vanderbilt in speech-language pathology. The educational "school" aspect of this place is not any better or any improvement in my opinion from what you can find for your child with a learning disability in a public school special education program, or private tutor. Definitely seek out a better quality boarding school and do your research and take a closer look. I can tell you right now there is no question in my mind and in the minds of numerous people I met and know from here, who have had the misfortune of passing through this place as either students, or employees, this place is an overrated, low quality school. Investigate carefully before sending your children here, is my recommendation. For God's sake, you can find "Wordly- Wise" books on amazon.com and you have been able to for the past 20 years! Please Note: In private chat rooms online there are similar sentiments to mine outlined above and similar rating's to mine voiced. I just thought it was long overdue for someone to be a little more forthright with voicing-writing about or verbalizing what actually goes on at this place. Things simply do not add up..."Where does all of the money go?" was a common question and sentiment of numerous staff members when I attended Oakland School and the staff morale was very low with a considerably high staff turnover particularly in the dormitories, where stability is needed the most. The staff members commonly voiced concerns about how the dormitory staff and teacher's pay at Oakland was low, the living conditions were poor to deplorable for the students who boarded and resided on campus, the cafeteria food was terrible, again, no air conditioning in the dormitories and majority of the classrooms, where does the $30k+annually for each student who boards there go actually? I believe one very positive, good and highly constructive idea would be for the parents of the students who attend Oakland currently and may share my concerns, together and request/demand an annual accounting as to where this money goes. Those are my thoughts on this anyway.

Our child began at Oakland in the summer program---we were looking for a camp-like environment…read morewhich could combine fun summer activities like swimming and riding with academic reinforcement for our child who struggles with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and working memory issues. After a very successful summer session, we decided to enroll for the winter boarding program and have been thrilled with the progress we have seen. Oakland is small, nurturing, and really "gets" kids with ADHD and learning differences. The calming rural setting and extremely small and personalized classes have resulted in our child loving school and making great progress both academically and with executive functioning skills. Oakland focuses on making sure that children obtain strong foundations in reading, writing and math---albeit at each child's unique pace. Perhaps more importantly, Oakland teaches children how to self-advocate and learn to manage their particular learning challenges---setting them up for future success in high school is one of the school's goals. Oakland's summer program is open to students from other schools who need academic reinforcement during the summer, and the regular program also operates on a rolling admissions basis for families seeking an alternative to their current educational situation. Tuition-wise, even Oakland's boarding program is comparable to the tuition of SN day schools in the DC area.
