Located in the village of…read moreCapelulo at the base of some pretty spectacular topography with a sweet little babbling brook nearby (and stunning ocean views), the Fairy Glen is a proper pub with good ales on tap (I liked the Crag Rat) and decent (extremely filling) food. On my visit, the folks behind the bar were friendly and the locals didn't seem to mind me rambling in with a backpack and SLR. It would be an ideal pub of an evening with friends by the fire and then a wobbly walk home to a nearby cottage. As I only popped in for lunch and a pint, I can't comment on the accommodations. But I will say that, given the awesome location, I wouldn't be against staying here for a night or two.

The welcome from the knowledgeable staff is also warm and the locals are very friendly to we incomers. There are no TV's, no juke-box and no food (other than bags of Tyrrell's crisps) so that conversation dominates. Upper Gate Street is also the road which leads directly to the Youth Hostel, making this the first pub hostellers encounter heading into town a definite plus for us!

In recent years it hit hard times and was eventually closed down. However there has been a recent development that will be of interest to proper beer drinkers. The pub has been purchased by a mysterious London based banker with roots in North Wales. He's re-opened it partnership with four local breweries The Conwy Brewery, the Great Orme Brewery, Bragdy Nant Brewery as well as the Purple Moose Brewery from Porthmadog. The pub is now a dedicated real-ale boozer with a particular emphasis on locally produced ales. There won't be any food (apart from crisps) as the premises doesn't have a kitchen so it will still be a drinker's pub but hopefully one with a more discerning clientele than of days gone by.

Before going I checked out the menu on their website and was a bit surprised by the prices, which are quite expensive for what at the end of the day is a pub in North Wales. I'd more or less decided in advance to go for the Welsh steak & ale pie which at £12.95 was just about a fiver more expensive than the steak & ale pie on offer at my more familiar haunt, the Afon Conwy which is just a few miles away. I was hoping for a very special pie! First things first the pub has a large car park so parking was no problem. The interior is very nicely done albeit in a fairly predictable gastropub decor. The dining area lives up to the venue's name with several tables along the side of the building offering views of Conwy Castle just over the water. The staff were friendly and efficient although there weren't many other customers to keep them occupied so they weren't anywhere close to being kept busy. Foodwise I went with the steak and ale pie which was fortunately very good and very well presented. My wife had a Caesar salad which was also excellent. The kids opted for chicken goujons and fish and chips from the kids menu, which at £7.25 each were two of the priciest kids meals we've encountered in this part of the world. Again though they were excellent, the goujon meal came with the two biggest goujons I've ever seen and the fish was a generous portion. The best compliment I give though is that both plates were cleared, something that doesn't always happen with my kids. As always there had to be someone who ordered something I ended up wishing I'd ordered and in this case it was father-in-law whose beer battered cod turned out to be a huge piece of fish which looked to be have been perfectly cooked. As this is one of the cheapest meals on the main menu I think if I ever go back that might be the one to try. All in all the food, and accompanying drinks, were all excellent and every plate was cleared. It's just a shame it's so expensive in comparison to other places in the area. It was noticeable that the place was very quiet when we visited, in fact it was almost deserted apart from the staff. It's a real shame given the quality on offer and I was left wondering if maybe they'd get more business if they knocked a quid or two off the prices? Certainly I'd more inclined to revisit if this were the case.

We saw the bartender (whom I didn't catch his name) & we had a couple of questions but he kindly answered each & every one of them. Having two vegans from my party & myself being vegetarian, the chef & bartender were helpful in providing us their options. Once we placed our order my sister brought to my attention that they open at 12 though we were inside at 11:50. It was so kind of the two gents to help us & provide us with extremely great service. The food was simple yet hot & delicious; vegan/vegetarian all day breakfast.

There are a few pubs surrounding the market place that gives the city this reputation, but one pub that's the exception is the Albert Inn on Segontium Terrace. I live on the same street and have been into this pub more than any other in the city, and walked past it most nights as well, and my opinion of the pub is that it's an old-fashioned quiet but friendly little pub that's full of character. The pub is old-fashioned in style but nicely decorated - with wooden floors and beams and wooden tables and chairs and bar. There's a pool table that takes up one half of the front of the pub, and a cosy area in front of a real fire in the other half. The bar itself is towards the back, along with some more seating. There's a variety of drinks available and prices are reasonable. There's a smoking area outside the back door which is excellent as it means there isn't anybody stood outside the front door smoking - I think even the nicest of pubs are affected by this image. Despite being English, I've never felt threatened in here and the regulars are all really friendly and chatty towards me.

There was also a bar in the area where we ate, which was handy since we both enjoyed drinks with our meal. For our entrees, I went with the cottage pie, and my wife selected the Creamy Chicken, Mushroom, and Tarragon pie. Both were absolutely fantastic. Every single bite was full of flavor and delicious. The staff there were friendly and engaged us in friendly conversation. The restroom was clean and well maintained. I'm thankful for the recommendation we received to eat here, and I would absolutely pass on the recommendation to anyone else who's in the area. After exploring the beautiful Castle Conwy, you should definitely check out the Erskine Arms for a hearty meal.

The food they serve is typical Pub Grub but prepared in a Gourmet style by properly trained Chefs. Much of the produce they use is local, try the Conwy Fish soup, locally caught mussels or the Angelsey Scallops. Whilst its not the easiest place to get to its well worth the extra mile to taste the gorgeous food they serve.
