I visited this pub after a fantastic afternoon exploring the north coast of Anglesey, visiting ancient neolithic monuments. Red Wharf Bay is a shallow, sandy bay between Moelfre and Beaumaris (the nearest town Qype recognised was Menai Bridge, but it's about 8 miles from there). There are fantastic views across to the forested penninsula just north of Beaumaris. You're thinking, sounds lovely, what a great place to stop for a well-deserved beverage, right? Wrong This pub, though on paper seems perfectly pleasant, if slightly average, in reality was below average and disappointing, which is a real shame considering the breathtaking surroundings.
To quote the website: ''The whole place exudes charm and warmth and the friendly, helpful staff just reinforce the feeling of calm and relaxation'' - Ahhhhh! Talk about false advertising! Admittedly the pub itself was nice, the building was old and rustic, with quite cosy interior, but it is situated behind a huge, ugly and faceless carpark that has been built directly in front of the place, a truely terrible planning decision. The tables outside the front are not attractive to sit at at all and the ones further round, on a grassy area and right next to the bay are broken, the grass was uncut, no glasses were cleared during our brief stay and it was right next to some ugly public toilets. There are signs everywhere, understandably covering their backs, but horribly off-putting - '' don't play on the fence'', ''we accept no responsibility for customers using the beer garden''. The staff were not exactly rude, but certainly did not ''reinforce the feeling of calm and relaxation''. Admittedly barking ''we don't allow dogs inside'' didn't help, what's wrong with, ''excuse me, please could we ask you to sit outside with your dog''? To top it off, a pint of local bitter and a diet coke cost £5.04 which is extortionate. They do food. I didn't eat there, so can't comment on the standard. The menu was standard pub fare.
I wouldn't recommend this place, try the Kinmel Arms in Moelfre instead. read more
