The location is in main area of Carmel in an older house converted to spa/salon. Just a great place! I followed my hair stylist, Britt, here from another salon. She always does a great job with my hair and really takes her time. Having moved from a very busy and loud salon, I love how quiet this salon is. All the employees were very friendly as well. The parking is on the street and I had no problem finding a spot. It's been a while since my last review, so I thought I should give it an update! The Ginkgo Tree is all sorts of awesome. Britt is my hairdresser now and she just gets my hair. The color always looks amazing and she deals with my thick hair with a smile on her face! Ha! I also have seen Jenny (the owner) several times for massages. Man, she is good! I went here for the first time the other day. My hair dresser had worked elsewhere, but convinced me to follow her to this new place in Carmel when she switched locations. She did an amazing job with my hair the first time, so I didn't hesitate to head to The Ginkgo Tree this time. The inside of this building is cute and clean. Yes, cute and clean. If you know anything about the Arts and Design District of Carmel, you know that each boutique is unique and fabulous. This place is no exception. Though it's a lot smaller than other salons in Indy, you feel a lot more important when it's a smaller scale. Britt was my hairdresser and I highly recommend her when you're searching for a great stylist. I had had long hair for the longest time and was hesitant about cutting it short. I started going here to go to Britt. She has done my hair at different places through the years. The salon is a nice house converted into a salon. Smaller feel rather than a busy hair salon. I will start off by saying I love to support women owned businesses! Heather is a masseuse who works out of a room in the Ginko Tree. I have been a massage client with Heather for over a year. She is incredibly thoughtful and knowledgable. For her massages she truly listens to your body and respects your wishes. After the massage, she does a short assessment of what she found in your body and recommends specific stretches. She is thorough and thoughtful with a flexible weekend schedule, reasonable prices, and outstanding attention to detail throughout the entire process. The facial I got with her was incredible. She told me things about my skin that I didn't know and recommended a plan for us to fix some areas, without making me feel uncomfortable. I would whole heartedly recommend Heather for massages and facials. She has the hands and a heart of gold! read more

I purchased a Groupon for a haircut and highlights back mid-June. I called the next day and the first available appointment was not going to be until the end of August. I needed to call and switch my appointment because in the past 2 months, something came up on the date I made the original appointment. I have left 7 messages, all of which have not been returned. I understand you do not have a receptionist, a lot of salons don't, but at least get an answering machine that works! Thanks to the Groupon promise, I was given a refund for this Groupon since I fear if they don't have time to call back a client, they will not have time to provide quality services either. Very disappointed and will not even get a chance to try out the salon. read more

The massage therapist is amazing! Knew spots that needed attention without me saying a word. I felt so much better immediately upon completion, it was shocking. She's very strong in hands and arms, and can really get in where she needs to get to. But also had a very light touch when I asked for it. Brit does a great job and is fun to talk with. She recently moved to The Ginkgo Tree. I really like the ambiance. It feels clean, fresh and relaxing. This review is in regards to Beth, the lady who does the eyelash extensions at this salon. There is a lady that does hair that was very sweet to me & seemed concerned that I had sat there for so long. She actually knocked on the door of the eyelash room to let her know that her next appointment was here (I had been there 30 minutes, I was 10-15 min early out of respect of appointment times). I should begin by disclosing that I had a Groupon for 1 Full Set (90 minutes) w/ a follow up 2 week refill (60 minutes) to be used for my bachelorette party and then my wedding, I made my appointment over months in advance. I was excited. My appointment morning arrives & I awake to find a text message that Beth has to cancel for a family emergency. I get it, I'm not mad about that. I'm upset that she wouldn't convert my next appointment to the 90 minute appointment that the groupon covered. She ignored 2 texts (the same way she cancelled so I know she communicates that way), a SMS message through her booking ap, & a phone call. She didn't care, clearly. I was sympathetic to her situation, but she was not to mine. So basically I got a 60 minute Fill on bare lashes...they fell out in 4 days! I've had eyelash extensions before & they've lasted 2+ weeks, I know how to care for them & get them to last. And these fell out in clumps! She attached/built eyelash extensions to each other rather than each individual real lashes. So when they fell out, they literally left huge, unnatural gaps in the hair line. What a huge disappointment this experience was. I actually drove from the southside thinking I would get higher quality in carmel...boy, I could not have been more mistaken. I felt like I was duped & robbed. I would have been better off putting on strip lashes from the dollar store. Oh, plus I'm assuming she smokes b/c her hands smelled of it (her hands were in my face for an hour) & she answers her phone during the appointment - unprofessional x 2. read more

I purchased a LivingSocial deal for Full highlights. It took 3 different attempts to schedule with Ellen, but I finally managed to find something that worked with her schedule. When I got there, I had to wait 20 minutes after my appointment time before I actually got in the chair. I have very long hair that tangles easily and I told her this before she started. When she took the foils out of my hair she couldn't get it brushed out and asked me to brush it for her. I brushed some of it and gave the brush back to her, expecting her to finish brushing it out. She just started cutting, with large tangles still in my hair. Her phone kept going off while I was there and she kept telling me how she needed to get home to her kids and that she doesn't take appointments this late, but made an exception for me because I was so hard to fit in. It was 5:30. She finished cutting (with a large tangle still at the bottom of my hair) and asked if it was ok if she didn't dry or style it because she really needed to get home to her kids. I knew that my haircut was not going to be even, but I didn't know what else to do, so I just left. I got home and brushed the rest of the tangles out of my hair and it was uneven all over. I tried to call the owner the next day, but she stated that Ellen was an independent contractor and she had nothing to do with her. Really?? The owner of the salon has nothing to do with her employees?? I told her that I wanted my money back and she again told me that it was not her problem and I had to take it up with Ellen. I called back 7 times over the next three days and finally Ellen called me back. She proceeded to tell me that it was my fault that she couldn't brush my hair out because it was too "compromised." I told her that I didn't want to argue and I just wanted my money back. She first tried to tell me that I would need to contact Living Social, but I informed her that I already had, so them she regretfully agreed to send me a check. I finally got a refund a week later. read more

My phone call was returned promptly and I realized I wouldn't be able to get an appointment the next day, but was more than happy to wait a couple of weeks to get in and she was able to work around my hectic schedule. Before I decided to go there, I took the reviews on here for face value since it's gonna be my first time in months to get waxed again. Gave it a try and was really impressed. The place itself, The Ginkgo Tree, is in a low-key, but pleasant location. It's in a semi-residential neighborhood, and it's not all flashy like most spa/ salons are these days. It looks like you're just going to some friends house for a visit. The vibe is friendly and welcoming. Even the brief wait was a pleasant experience since the lady at the front desk was very pleasant (sorry I forgot her name :( ). Nicky did a really great job and changed waxing for me. I was used to stingy wax sessions that I had to do tedious preparation to lessen the pain yet didn't really help that much; but, with her, she made it a nice experience. I agree with Alexandra G. that it's quick and nearly painless. Plus, Nicky is a cool gal! I love the 'wax' she uses -- no bumps, not much itching even when hair starts to grow back. I'm sure to go back there and bring some friends with me soon! read more

I was looking for a new salon and purchased a groupon for a haircut and color with Erin. The service was absolutely terrible. She was on her cell phone the entire time she was coloring my hair and barely acknowledged my presence. She did not greet me when I came in or ask me my name the entire time I was there. The other two employees in the salon were doing each other's hair and acting very unprofessionally. It's a real shame, as I really used to love that place (years ago!). If you are looking for an enjoyable experience, this is not the place for you. read more
