Since moving to Barking, I have to travel far for my kebabs now, nothing really beats kebabs cooked over charcoal and from a genuine Turkish restaurant. Its all about Ocakbasi, the days of fast food takeaways "meat and chips boss" are over.
So when I discovered that a couple of Turkish restaurants are opening in the Barking and East Ham area, I was like YES, FINALLY... real food.
The Generals Grill is a new restaurant which just opened in Barking (2016) - Longbridge road, those who know the area. The restaurant is newly refurbished and looks nice, as it should be. Seems ready for business, but not quite, only accepts cash, and when it gets busy, service is very slow. Second visit (takeaway), restaurant was quiet, and they forgot to include my halloumi order, which I had reminded and paid for, they should focus on customers rather than chit chatting. - Just saying. They were friendly at least.
The food: Order the platter for 1 and lamb chops. Unfortunately it did not meet my expectations, maybe I had set them too high. The grilled meats were too dry and flavours was very weak. The bread that usually comes with it, was quite tough also. The platter for 1 which was about £12 btw did not feel like it was value. You see the reason why I ordered platter for 1 and lamb chops, two separate meals, was to see if they serve the same lamb chops in the platter. It wasn't. The chicken wings and Chicken shish in the platter was the biggest let down, wings look pitiful, and shish was just dry. The rice which accompanied it was okay-ish, with the grilled meat, it kind of balanced the flavour.
Overall its an okay from me, could be better. Maybe I will come back to try once its full opened for a while. but until then I will continue to go back to where I usually go for kebabs. Hackney.
