We ended up in this restaurant having gone to the Victoria Park firework display (review on that later!) and needing some food afterward. Having tried to escape the crowds we headed over to Broadway Market to find that many people had had the same idea... With most places full we ended up at the last restaurant on the strip, Solche Cilician. Not knowing what to expect but hungry, we went in and grabbed a table. The place was packed and everyone seemed to have sat down at the same time.
The staff were a little unprepared for the rush, and it took some time in order to order and get drinks, by some time, I mean, our drinks did arrive with our starters and turned up after our main course had arrived, but only because I walked over to the bar myself to get them. That said, the order was actually ready when I got there but the single bartender was having a tough time (as were what seemed like only two servers). While the service annoyed us, it was easy to see what happened, as we were right in the middle of it. Every table filled up at exactly the same time and they weren't prepared. Unfortunate but it happens. The kitchen was opposite us and they were champions, food appeared and it was good, it looks like every couple of minutes an order was up and being sent on it's way. And in that respect the servers did an admiral job, hot food was given a priority and didn't seem to be on the counter for long at all.
The food is a mixture of Turkish/Greek and Italian, grilled kebab meat shared the menu with pizza. We opted for Turkish with a special meze followed by a moussaka (unfortunately a veggie one was delivered but was good so no complaint was made) and the Solche special - available for a minimum of 3 people. The special made up for the lack of meat in the moussaka - A metre long plank of wood, with a bowl of salad at one end, a bowl of rice at the other and the middle covered in meat, chicken kabob, lamb kabob, chicken wings, lamb ribs and a spiced lamb sausage.
The food was really tasty, spiced but not hot and cooked well (although the chicken kabob was slightly too well, but better well than pink in my opinion). We finished off everything (well, one of our party did, the rest of us were stuffed) paid up and headed off into the night, 1 sharing starter, 3 meat specials, 1 standard plate and a bottle of wine - £80 inc service.
Not bad for a last ditch meal when everything else was full (they're at the end of the strip which filled up from one end to the other) and if I was in the area, I'd head there again. While I'd normally knock off a star for service. I think this was a special circumstance that wouldn't normally occur. read more
