The customer service is what will keep you in this store. They are wonderfully attentive and understanding of everyone's jewelry needs, asking all the right questions and never being pushy or too sales-y. I was a total novice walking in the door and left each visit feeling more knowledgable about the process. We originally came in for an engagement ring design, meeting with Paul to discuss options. Be prepared for a few meetings and email communication -- they are very thorough and design most rings from scratch. They have bands that you can customize and you work with him or their team to pick out the right stone to fit your needs and wants. After designing the ring, we decided we wanted to go in another direction. I was worried to change ideas, but Paul was wonderfully helpful, assuring us that people change direction all the time. In our case, there wasn't too many man-hours invested yet and we were able to pivot easily. From there, we looked at different diamond bands, I wanted something simple and low profile. We found the right fit and it didn't take more than a few days to get the order in for the sizing I wanted and they had it ready a few days after I made the decision on the band and had it resized for me. I also worked with them to resize and add a new small diamond chip that was missing from my Great Aunt's platinum ring, along with a thorough cleaning --it looks brand new. They encourage their customers to visit every 6-months for a steam cleaning. I will surely be back for that and at any point for future designs. Several years ago my husband made the wonderful choice of purchasing my engagement ring at The Gem Lab. The location is small and quiet but they help you customize and make jewelry exactly how you wish. They are very careful about skin allergies and sensitivities and know how to make a diamond look beautiful and sparking. We also purchased our wedding bands here and they came out wonderful and my band compliments the engagement ring perfectly. I come back at least every 6 months to have my rings polished and they look good as new (Included when you purchase the rings here). I have never made an appointment just walked in and they were able to help me. Staff has always been helpful, courteous and friendly when I have stopped in. I've never written a Yelp review in my life, but the experience I had with the Gem Lab warrants one. Especially since it is very underrated here. My fiancee and I used the Gem Lab for both her engagement ring, and our wedding rings. We worked with their jeweler Paul Cassarino throughout our entire experience. We were looking to get the best price on a diamond for the engagement ring, so we went through an online wholesaler. We brought the first diamond in to Paul, and he examined it for us. He noted that there was some issues with it that would cause it to be very difficult to insure. Seeing this, we returned that diamond and sent out for a new one. In the mean time, we had Paul show us their collection. While we were comparing prices, he recognized that the online wholesaler would be a better deal, and told us to go with them for the diamond and come to them for the setting. I've heard stories of other jewelers refusing to help in these situations. Paul was more than helpful, and even made sure that our online deal was legitimate and exactly what we paid for. The build quality of the setting itself is very high, it was perfect when it came in, and we've had no issues since. When it came time to pick out our wedding bands, we came back to the Gem Lab. We talked with both Paul and another assistant at the shop. Over the course of our decisions, there was a miscommunication in the designs that we wanted, and the rings that came in were different from the designs that we wanted. When we brought this to their attention, Paul immediately did everything he could to help us get the rings we actually wanted. Which included putting a rush service on the rings (our wedding was only a few weeks away). He told us that even though the original bands could not be returned, he was not going to charge us anything for them, and the shop was just going to absorb the cost. The customer service here is spectacular, and Paul is easily the best jeweler I've ever dealt with. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for quality service and jewelry. read more

My wife and I have been going to the Gem Lab for many years and have always been pleased with the customer service and knowledge of the personnel. It helps me out tremendously that their computer knows what I've purchased in the past so that any new gifts are complimentary to previous items and definitely not duplicates (although gold and diamonds are never out of fashion). i brought a travel clock in thinking it was broken and it was just a battery problem (byw, they don't do watch repairs, but will recommend a watchmaker). While I was waiting for the clock, four salespeople asked if I needed help with anything, so it must be that in a small store they can be overwhelmed with customers at times, but try their best to please. I think their prices are competitive and there always seems to be something new to buy. They do custom work too and are expert at jewelry repairs. Recently, my engagement ring got caught in a door and the middle diamond fell out. I was able to recover the diamond, and brought it to the Gem Lab to be fixed. They did an amazing job on my ring and it looks even better than new. It's not the fanciest ring (but it still means the world to me), but they took the time and care to make it look amazing and didn't look down on me for not having the best ring in the place. They even called me after looking it over for a day to suggest a cheaper fix than originally quoted, but a better quality one. They put in stronger, better quality prongs to hold in the diamonds and it really pops better than it ever has before. They also cleaned my wedding ring when I picked up the repair, and said that any time I'm in the area, they would clean my rings for free. Paul did an excellent job with our apprasil and Cathy was an amazing help with picking our setting and continued customer service. They put my ring together beautifully! And then... I had only had my ring for a few weeks and accidently knocked it pretty hard, I took it back and they fixed me up, free of charge, and within a half hour or so. I have been going to the Gem Lab since they were in the Sibleys Building in downtown Rochester which is over 35 years ago. This is by far the best jewelry store in and out of town. The quality and selection is amazing and like no other jewelry store I've ever been to. They will custom make anything you ask for also which most places will not do. The people who work there are very professional and caring about your needs and very knowledgeable about their merchandise which is so very important.
