Time flies by when you're having a good relaxing time! Whoever first invented yelp is an absolute genius! I decided to have a power drink at the city's glorified Elder Park Cafe. I've spent the last few hours yelping my way through crazy Hindley Street, so I needed somewhere to relax and unwind. The more I yelp and get to know Adelaide a bit better, the more I'm going to miss places like these. When Mario P wrote "This place earns its rating for the view", he wasn't kidding because I highly agree with this absolutely delightful view!

I'm a person who's easily pleased with foods and drink. I'm also mostly broke, and consequently cheap. For this reason, I very rarely eat anything at a café. Mostly, I sample the coffee. I really, really love a macchiato, and one of the reasons I love it is for its consistency. In my experience, it's really difficult for a café to stuff up a macchiato. Of course, it HAS happened, but rarely. For this reason it's hard to lay down some reviews, because wherever I go I walk away happy and satisfied. Maybe this is just because Adelaide has a lot of great places to choose from. At the Elder Park Café I tend to mix things up a bit. They do a great macchiato but, as I've said, so does almost everyone else. What I find they do really well is just a good, old-fashioned latté. They steam the milk a little more than usual, which, for me, is just right. One of my favourite things to do in the world (up there with driving fast in the middle of the night with all my windows down) is to settle down to Elder Park by myself, order a latté and settle down to enjoy the view.

A new cafe in an old corner grocery store has breathed life back into a sad little shop…read more We went there for a Friday morning coffee (opens at 830) and 3 hours later we were still there after our 2nd cups/pots of tea that pour seemingly endless cups (ok..maybe 3). It's advertised as a cooking school, cafe and "stuff" venue, and is starting slowly with openings just Mon - Friday until 4pm, but they have events coming up, and have various cooking opportunites, including classes for kids - so keep up to date on https://www.facebook.com/FiveLittleFigs. The breakfasts that were served looked generous and delicious, and they have gluten, wheat and vegan food on offer and it looks fresh and sumptuous...next time! They cater to children, so if you're worried about young people playing (and crying) - don't come! I see this as a refuge for parents who want to meet their friends while their kids can draw on the chalk board or have something to eat at their own table. Support a new local, or pop out of your way for a quirky, delicious cafe.

She greeted us personally and gave us a warm welcome. I love the menus! What a novel idea to have them made out of little children's books. Read a little story while waiting - why not? Or just dwell in the reverie that such an item evokes. The atmosphere is fun and friendly with quirky and lovely decor that has been well described in other reviews. Suffice it to say that there is much to look at, enjoy and also purchase. The food was delicious! I love an all day breakfast option and am particularly impressed with the varied bread and non-bread options. e.g. I had a breakfast dish, called 'smashed' which was served on sweetcorn fitters. Delicious non-bread accompaniment to eggs and salmon. My dining companions ordered the pumpkin burger and apparently that was scrumptious. Really healthy too. It looked amazing. Michelle's attention to detail, atmosphere, quality and presentation of food and ability to create warm feelings and fun, make this a great place to come (they also have cooking classes for children and various other activities you can keep abreast of on Facebook).

What makes it more inviting is the crowd of people entering the place. They must be doing something right to make it that popular. While waiting, I get to observed the place more closely. It's a minimalistic themed place and despite being crowded, they get to maintain the cleanliness of the place. So we've waited and waited. It's been 10 minutes and still no food on the table. Me and hubby considered the busy-ness of the place. I just thought, might as well wait and have good quality food instead of a fast but cheapo finish. Our iced chocolate was starting to melt and that's when I began counting the time. Approximately 15 to 20 minutes passed before food arrived (Iced chocolate no more lol lol). But we had plenty of time so it was alright. Mind you, the presentation was impressive with the seafood platter. The spaghetti bolognese looks simply appetizing too. Unfortunately, the taste wasnt at par to the look. My hubby was really disappointed with the food. You see he loves his spaghetti, and this one frustrated him soooo much. LOL He finds it bland and taste like minced meat caserrole or something. He just can't taste the sphagetti-ness of its sauce. I tried it and it was ok but it reminds me more of a Villie's meat pie filling than spaghetti. Also, the sauce is not your creamy pasta but a watery one. The seafood platter is not bad though but not outstanding either. The ingredients are just the usual fish n chips taste--- not oily but bland. The garlic prawn is ok. I like the pepper squid-- just the right saltiness to it. I like the mayo dip and the salad. Like i said, it's ok but not something I would crave for the second time. If I'll summarize our experience here. It's not too bad compared to the usual fastfood. They have big servings but food is more visually appealing than its taste. If we'll come back, I would probably try their steak. But hubby was pissed with their spaghetti (lol) so it wont happen anytime soon.

But in Elizabeth, it is a welcome change from food court rubbish, or the culinary suicide of McDonalds and KFC. The decor is modern and pleasant, the tables and floor are clean. The food is average, but not bad. Same with the coffee and tea. Nothing bad to say, but nothing pops out as showing exceptional flair to catch a foodies eye or palate. It relies on "all you can eat" promotions to fill the restaurant on slow nights, and for Sunday breakfasts. As already stated, a product of its environment. It does have the advantage of being surrounded by sub-par chain food outlets, and an American pub opposite with a reputation for awful food. Compared to these options, Cafe Acqua does well. An example of the standards is a coffee a friend ordered, the ceramic mug sported a deep chip right where you place your mouth (steel teeth are all the rage in the north it seems....) There is no way the barista could not have seen it when making the beverage, and when I returned it to the bar, rather than make a replacement, the coffee was poured into a replacement cup and handed back. I doubt the mug was thrown out... So, if in the Elizabeth City Centre, you certainly can do worse. Just don't expect much, and you'll be happy.

There are several vegetarian options both in the entree's and mains. The inside is neat and decked out in earthy tones with a splash of colour on the red ceiling. I particularly liked the stools topped with fur cushions. Tables are set simply, with faux-plants. The Pad Thai Chicken ($12.50) was a solid example of the dish, according to my dining companion. My Vietnamese Tofu Salad ($9.90) had a tangy dressing and numerous strips of deep fried tofu, topped with grated carrot and cucumber, corriander and crushed roasted peanuts. Underneath was a bed of mesclun lettuce, which didn't seem to fit with the Asian theme. It almost filled me up but I'd describe it as light, healthy, and carb free. I'd saved room for the Sticky Black Rice with Coconut Pudding ($2) as advertised up at the counter, and after my light lunch certainly had room, but upon trying to order was told that unfortunately it's only available at night time. It was so refreshing to have a dessert that wasn't smothered in cream, chocolate sauce and syrup but was instead light, fluffy and fresh. For $8 I received a generous serving of vanilla ice cream and fresh, juicy strawberries with enough chocolate sauce to ensure the waffle wasn't too dry or bland. The half serving was perfect for a morning tea sized snack. I'm really disappointed this place doesn't open later for weeknight desserts and that is the only reason for a loss of star. But it is definitely worth trying on a weekend or early Friday night after dinner at Cos or drinks at Udaberri across the road.
