This review has been a long time coming but at least I am writing once my anger has had time to subside.
I also note this is now closing (NOT SURPRISED!) so some might say this is pointless... but important for me to leave this review for what was a really horrible experience.
My wife and I LOVE our food and visiting restaurants and the Foxhunter looked right up our street. Beautiful location and an enticing menu. We lived in Kent and so travelled 5+ hours to eat and stay in their "accommodation". When we booked, we thought nothing of the price of the accommodation as we really wanted to treat ourselves and were happy to pay top whack for what we thought would be a really luxurious weekend.
Shown to our accommodation, this is where our dream weekend became a nightmare. We had been advised to book a particular apartment because it had a bath and we had a newborn baby. It was not advised however that the plumbing to this apartment basically did not work and you could only fill the bath with a couple of inches of hot water to bathe our sun... I had an unpleasant, sit-down, cold, shower and my wife (first round of tears) had a stand up wash at the sink... this was only the first afternoon/evening and we still had another one to come! For the cost of the accommodation, this was disgusting BUT, being typically British we sucked it up and got ready for Dinner.
The food was pretty bad but honestly, this was not the upsetting part of our visit. We had travelled a long way though and the food was meant to be the main event. The starters were both cold and pretty uninspiring... and had no real flavour. The mains, for us were not as good as some of the beautiful pubs we visit back home in Kent and the deserts were equally as poor.
Our biggest issue at dinner was the service. We were greeted by a very young girl, who didn't really know what was going on... "what beers do you have" was greeted with "ummmm not sure, I'll just check" and then "what wines by the glass do you have" was greeted with.... "ummmm, I'll just check" again. Please don't get me wrong - I know everyone has to work, but it was clearly her first day but she was just left by the management to get on with it, not really knowing anything about service or what people need. NOT HER FAULT but for us it was terrible. We had to ask for anything we needed repeatedly throughout the meal: drinks; drinks again; salt (main under-seasoned); to order out desserts; where are our desserts; we ordered our coffees to come with dessert; can we have the bill; you were going to bring us the bill?
We complained at the meal but nothing really other than to say we were disappointed at the standard. The lady (Mrs T) was very unimpressed when I nervously said we were happy to pay but that we were very disappointed with the food (we didn't mention) the terrible service. Her attitude here was pretty shocking but this was just the beginning. We retreated somewhat miserable to our room (second round of tears from my wife).
In the morning (post-cold-sit-down-shower) we (and certainly my wife) had had enough so I went to the main building to tell them we wanted to leave (we had another night booked). Spoke to Mr T, which was unusual as we had been told he wasn't there and therefore was not in the kitchen the previous night. Mr T's attitude was VERY aggressive. Maybe I caught him at a bad moment but he MUST have been able to see I wasn't that comfortable telling him we wanted to leave and that our dining experience was terrible, even miserable. He said "the accommodation is fine" and that we had been "purposefully given the room to help us with our baby". It may be fine as a bolt hole for someone to lay their head overnight but NOT as a two night minimum stay £150 per night room. In the end, he actually apologised for the poor meal and said he would look into it but not after really insulting me and my wife by suggesting we knew nothing about food... I explained the potatoes on my wife's meal had tasted too fatty and he said "yeah, they are cooked in duck fat!". Thanks, we get that, but they tasted like they had been sat in duck fat for 24 hours and then served luke warm... not nice! Anyway, he accepted we weren't happy (albeit begrudgingly) and that we wouldn't stay the second night. Another retreat back to our room to pack things up.
The REALLY upsetting bit was when I went to pay. This time Mrs T. I was pretty shocked (given how upset we were - travelled 5 hours, couldn't really wash, terrible food, and even worse service) at how aggressive she was. I asked her what we owed, expecting to perhaps pay the meal (although I think they should have discounted this) and receive a refund for our second night. I was presented with a +£100 bill for our food. I said you need to take our second night of the bill, I won't pay and that I thought it was poor that they wanted us to pay for a terrible meal but that I would anyway. She was extremely rude several times in the next minutes... read more
