I dont go downtown I go to the Flying Walrus! The Flying Walrus alone is the only bar in downtown 17th street that is worth visiting. Amazing pizza, great (strong) drinks, and properly kept. My boyfriend and I consider ourselves regulars, we go at least once a week just to enjoy a night out with live music or for when I want a pizza cheat day.. (totally worth it!) I don't know what Greg was on the day that he went but trust me minors don't come to the Walrus, it is just not there scene. And the live music outside can be heard perfectly fine.. This place is pretty big and has a back patio. There's often a live band. It's a super casual place that's pretty popular with 20somethings. I tried their lemon pepper wings and one of their signature drinks. I thoroughly enjoyed it all. They adjust their pizza prices accordingly to the time of night, which I guess is a smart business move based on supply and demand (the later it gets, the more limited your food choices). So, if price matters to you, come sooner rather than later. read more

The Walrus sticks out in McAllen for its uniquely "Austin" feel. There is typically live music on the back patio and plenty of space: 4 bars, pool tables and multiple stages. The set up is refreshing as there are a top and bottom seating areas on the patio each with their own bars. The prices are very affordable and the food is amazing! Always fun at Flying Walrus. The outdoor setup is great. There is an upstairs patio which is a perfect place to watch the band play.

This place is awesome they have great drinks. when I go there with my friends we always get this drink called "The Flying Strawberry " the drink taste delicious. It's a fair price. They also sell pizza here it's really good. They remolded it and it looks awesomer they now have pool tables and the outside patio is bigger now. Also there's always a live band outside. And I think on Wednesdays it's karaoke night. Totally recommend this place. read more

We moved to the Valley one week ago. Last night we decided to go check out the nightlife. I picked the Flying Walrus because it sounded like a cool place. And it really is a cool place. There are three separate rooms, a bar, a pool table room and outside in back there is a two level patio with a stage. The music was really good considering they were local and playing cover tunes. All and all it was an excellent night! We had the deep fried portobello mushrooms and they are super good with a spicy ranch sauce. I would definitely recommend the place and will be going back. I am a transplant from San Antonio to Brownsville and wanted to try something different than what is in Brownsville. I found the Walrus on Yelp and decided to give it a try. We got there around 9:30 but apparently it was still too early as it was pretty dead. We walked down the strip to compare to other places and ended up coming back as it seemed to be the most interesting. We went upstairs to the outside patio and there was a live band playing and the bartender was friendly. We drank some beer, listened to the music and ordered a couple of slices of pizza. All in all it turned out to be a good night. I hope this place stays open Long enough to make it back a second time. read more

The walrus is a laid back live music establishment. The crowd is kicked back and easy going. The drinks are delicious and moderately priced. They serve late nite pizza that's more on the drunken remedy side of things. All in all a cool bar. read more

I love this place! This is the by far the best bar/live music venue in downtown McAllen for rock/international/alternative college music. The bartenders are very knowledgeable and on top of their game! They just expanded and made another area for music. Now they have two music stages and 3 bars. The patio is one of the best places on 17th St to enjoy music and some drinks while under the stars listening to music. This place does get packed on the weekends...and that is because this place is great hang-out. Not to mention they also have some of the best pizza around! Walking into this bar reminds me of the live music bars on 6th St in Austin. Very fun place to let loose for the night! read more

A bar should be cleaner than this!! I noticed that the bartenders have to walk around to the back patio to get ice, which means they are carrying uncovered tubs of ice outside where who knows what could get in it. Then it goes into your drink, ugh no thanks! I just stuck to beer after seeing that. I also notiiced some dust in other pllaces around the bar. I think the fact that they have a smoking area is great, but they need to keep the ashtrays clean. They have live music going on out in the back, but it's hard to hear it wiith all the noise coming from the gangs of minors that seem to frequent the place. I guess that's the price you pay when you hire musicians that are still in high school. read more

This place sucks, the manger on duty he stated his name is Fred. Over charged me. He made it seem that I needed to purchase a pizza to be able to get a slice. When a "community pizza" came up and slices were still available for purchase she stated they were sold already. When I asked a different employee he sold me the slices. Now 25 dollars in. Only then did "Fred" try to help. I ask for his supervisors name repeatedly and refused, I asked for contact Info to be able to voice my grievance, he refused. Ended up voiding my food transaction, so I left the establishment with a 5-8 day hold on my funds, no food and poor service. Apparently a "Kevin" is his direct supervisor, I will attempt to contact him, but this place was shady. And during the covid pandemic, no one had masks (employees) and ppl where sitting at the bar. Not sure if this was totally a gross failure to abide by the rules to reopen, and aside from that, a very poor costumer experience. read more

I just moved to McAllen and this is probably my favorite bar. Prices are standard for 17th street ($4 a beer after happy hour), but I like this place over the others because of the live music and the nice upper deck. Great place to chill and to enjoy the music. Downstairs bar is a bit more hectic, but they often play funny videos on a projector and I enjoy this. Also, I've never had a problem getting a drink and the staff is friendly. this is a really great place with great music, pizza and drinks. alex the bartender is very personable and makes fantastic drinks. the only improvement i can say is the service in the patio. it's a bit slow....there is a young woman out there and i see alex helping her out but she needs to get her wheels moving or get another server out there. other than that i would totally recommend this place read more
