I hired the Fluted Mushroom for my daughters wedding at the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden on July 22, 2017. Although they were more expensive than any other caterers we considered, they had unbelievable reviews and I wanted nothing but the best for my only daughter's wedding. Although they were great to work with throughout the entire process, and they did a good job with most aspects of the evening, there were two major mishaps at the wedding that were just inexcusable and pretty much ruined what would have otherwise been a perfect review. The GOOD: Very helpful during the planning process, food was beautiful looking and well presented, servers were well dressed and very professional. The BAD: Although all of the food was beautiful and displayed well, there was a major failure when it came to the Filet Mignon. The Filet was to be served "Luke warm" or "room temperature" as it was a hot July wedding outdoors. Unfortunately, I found out the day before the wedding that the filet would be prepared at their kitchen, then REFRIGERATED before it was brought to the Pittsburgh Botanic Gardens to be served. I was immediately concerned and asked Amy how they were going to bring this filet back to room temperature since there was only one oven at the venue. Amy's exact works were "Don't worry, We do this all the time". I took her at her word and was satisfied they knew what they were doing and everything would be fine. UNFORTUNATELY, as my guests were eating, and I began to make my rounds, the first table I went to I asked how the food was. The guest said "It's good......but the Filet is REALLY cold and I was a little thrown off by it". I couldn't believe it. This was just what I was worried about. I was hoping that this was an isolated incident, perhaps his filet was on the bottom of the tray and did not warm up sufficiently. Unfortunately, as I made contact with my guests after the wedding, one by one, every single one I asked agreed that the Filet was REALLY cold. IN ADDITION: I was assured that Fluted Mushroom always makes sure there's plenty fo food and there would be plenty of leftovers. That was not the case. Not only was there no Filet or Salmon left over, There were guests that wanted more Filet and there was none. My own brother asked for an extra piece as they were serving and the server told him "No - we have to make sure there enough for everybody". Before the dinner was served, I noticed a server in the kitchen eating a plate with filet on it. But our own Maid of Honor did not get any as there was only a few pieces of salmon left when she went to eat. Since I am unable to survey every one of my guests to see if they got any filet, I still am left wondering how many others were forced to eat salmon. And as for the leftovers, we were given one tray of salad, one tray of grilled veggies, and one tray of hummus. No Salmon, No Filet. Now, given that the catering bill (food and servers) was over $17,000 for 175 people, I am left VERY feeling very sick about this whole experience. For $17,000, you would think they would play it safe and order a couple extra filets for a hundred dollars a piece and make sure they had plenty. This is a reputable caterer and I'm sure that 99.9% of the time they do a perfect job, but on this occasion, they failed, and I am left feeling like I paid way too much for not enough food and Filet Mignon served ice-cold. I did call Amy after the wedding to voice my concerns and she seemed to understand. However, I have never gotten an apology and was never contacted explaining how this could have happened. I have considered sending a letter to all of my guests explaining that this was a mistake and I did not intend to serve them such cold meat, but at this point, I just want it to go away, so I'm writing this off to a lesson learned. Unfortunately, you only have one chance to get a wedding right and there's simply no way to undo this. read more
