They didn't bother to contact me to explain or offer another day, I just got an automated email from their booking system. Emails to the landlord take several days to get a response and he has also not been reachable by phone. The only response from the landlord has been to say that they've decided not to be open Sunday January 1st 2023, but if they're going to take reservations so far ahead they should honour them, and simply block out days on the system for future bookings that they won't be open for. Their website says they are uniquely inhospitable. I agree with that assessment.

My friend and I started frequenting this pub "every couple of Wednesdays" as soon as lockdown rules allowed and I have to say that I've never, ever been disappointed. Their BBQ Pulled Pork Tortilla warps are stunning but the Pork & Black Pudding Scotch Egg that I had with it was stunning - whoever came up with this is a genius!!! 15 out of 10 for the cooking and the atmosphere!

Good food served all day, each day and I would go to say it's some of the best modern pub food you're likey to order in the area. The pub has a decent sized well kept garden to the back and also a seating area out the front, amongst the hustle and bustle of the busy High Street. Staff are very welcoming and while its clear it's a locals pub it's also somewhere that accommodates good pub food and drinks for the odd night out/Sunday Roast. The food menu isn't huge which I think is good to keep the quality, which it does. You can expect in trend meals such as 'Mac & Cheese' & pulled pork etc as well as tradition pub favourites. However I feel the menu could be refreshed more often. I can highly recommend the gnocchi on the current menu. You can tell I've eaten there once or twice! Steak night on a Thursday is great and really popular. 2 good quality steak meals and a bottle of wine for £30. There are various themed evenings to check out and the odd event such as a cider and pork day festival that happened early this year, which was a lot of fun and family friendly to boot. All in all the Cross Hands is a good modern pub in the fishponds area that blends your classic local with good quality dining. It's not the cheapest option of watering holes in the area but is great and also definitely accommodates a wee tipple on a Friday and Saturday night!

The Cross Hands is a superb pub/restaurant and is a breath of fresh air for the Fishponds area…read more I've been in The Cross Hands from time to time over the years, but some friends (and fellow elites) recently move a couple of streets away, so I've been been in there quite a bit recently, and I've had a great time I each time I've been. What I really like about it is that it has a really cosy, proper pub feel to it, while also being a really good restaurant. The food these guys serve up is fantastic! They do a steak night which is every Thursday which is 2 steaks and a bottle of wine for £30, and with the quality of the food its a great deal. They have good outside seating areas at the front me back and have a brilliant hog roast and cider festival in the summer, with live bands and lots of banter. Sunday Lunches are also really good. But it's not all about the food, however good it is. This is a really good pub that feels like you're in your local, even if it's the first time you've been.

The Volunteer is one of Bristol's many hidden gems…read more Situated just on the outskirts of Old Market a minutes walk from Cabot Circus, you probably wouldn't know it's there without a recommendation. It's quite a small pub and while it lacks a decent size for big groups it makes up for it with cozy character. On entry there is a pateoed garden complete with pub benches and what looks to be a stone bake pizza oven which I guess would be great for summer. I'd chosen the Volunteer for my team at work's Christmas dinner as it was a convenient short walk from my place of work in Temple Quay (next to Temple Meads) and i'd heard great things about the quality of the food and service. We had a table of 10 which took up a large portion of the pub, the service was very friendly, can't fault the table service provided. The food was excellent. Starters consumed were pigeon, leak and onion soup and crab thermidor. The hit of the starters appeared to the the pigeon. The Christmas dinner on offer was excellent. Not just first class pigs in blankets but devils on horse back as well (prunes wrapped in bacon). My overall review of the roast on offer is that it's a no nonsense well executed roast dinner that definitely should be a consideration for a good roast in central Bristol. I played it safe for the 3rd course and went for the cheese board, which was also great. All your cheese & cracker classics accompanied with a curry style chutney, pickled onions and capers. There is a good selection of drinks on offer as well. The barman was more than happy to give some advise on the extensive range of ales on offer! All in all a great time had at the Volunteer. I'll definitely be heading back for a Sunday roast at some point and maybe see how it fairs up in the summer as well!

All ages are welcome (within the law) and the owner's dogs are often wandering around. I don't particularly like dogs but they don't cause any offence! They play some of the big sports games on a projector but I wouldn't say it was a particularly sporty pub. You can also hire some of it out for private parties. And as if that wasn't enough amazingness - there's an absolute peach of a sun-trapping roof terrace out the back that feels a bit like you're on holiday!
