The landlord is very friendly, welcoming all his customers when he can.

I used to go to Bath Spa Uni, just up the road, so I got to know this place pretty well over the course of my degree. There's a range of good quality beers, ales and wines available from the bar and in the summer the pub garden is a great place to relax. They also serve a pretty extensive menu of posh pub grub, which is a little on the expensive side, in my opinion. The last time I ate here I was served some raw chicken. I hate complaining, but I just asked if they could replace it, but instead they just shoved it back in the oven for a bit and gave it back to me a few minutes later. Not so great. Still, it's a lovely place for drinking.

The downstairs is a traditional pub with wooden booths that are good for hunkering down in for a drink and a chat. The upstairs, which is normally the dining area, can be cleared out and (if you supply your own decks, soundsystem and lights) turned into a quirky but surprisingly effective venue for a party. There's also an upstairs balcony for smokers. It's free to hire if you spend a certain (very attainable) amount behind the bar and, if memory serves, you can keep going until 2am.

Last time I went with a group of eight and only heard one person with a bad word about their meal. It's not cheap, but there are lunch deals, so maybe go and research these before visiting. Whether you visit the bar or the restaurant (that's if you've got the cash to do it) Severn Shed will bring a dash of class to your day.

And it's back with BIG food. Although pulled pork is 'in' at the moment, the Hobgoblin do it very well. Huge rolls filled with Mexican marinated pork with slaw and pickles on the side. As well as the big pulled pork rolls they do mountain sized burgers that look deliciously threatening; cheese rolling down the sides and buns shining from the grease. But the best thing on the menu is the 'Dirty, dirty fries' which were 'born out of a hangover'. The Dirty, dirty fries are a huge mix of fries, pulled pork, melted cheese and spicy sauces. They really are amazing! The Hobgoblin has a food challenge called 'The Kraken'. I can't remember everything that's on it but it involves lots of meat, dirty fries and chicken wings. I don't think anyone has completed it within the hour yet. Their pulled pork is smoked on site, burgers homemade and meat locally sourced from a Gloucester Road butcher. Probably bought with Bristol pounds and wrapped in an evening post, too! The decor is casual and the bar serves your normal lagers, beers, ciders, cocktails and shots. While the emphasis is on the food at the Hobgoblin, you'll still find a few groups just there for drinks. This isn't a first date place but it is a great place to meet mates and tuck into great, dirty food.
