Yes, the recent room renovations seem nice but what you don't see is the homeless shelter next to the property. When directly asked about it, the management will tell you it's a homeless outreach program for women and their children but there is also a homeless encampment adjacent to the outreach program for the folks and their friends/family who don't qualify or comply with the program's rules and policies. Man, we dodged a bullet seeing the two reviews warning potential visitors on TripAdvisor about this issue!! Photos looked fine online and this hotel offered a summer long rental for interns coming into the area needing a 3 or 4 month rental. Thought this was the answer but thankfully we saw the reviews and found a different summer rental in a safe area. Yikes. I am accustomed to many hotels adjusting room cleaning so that it's not every day, or by request, or once a week. But this is the first instance in which I experienced the policy adopted as once every two weeks. You can pick up towels or linens at the front desk, but 2 weeks is really not acceptable. This site unlike other Sonestas does not include breakfast but unlike other does offer free laundry. And I appreciate that. But only the policy of room cleaning I am dropping my original review down one star to 3. I sincerely think management needs to re-evaluate that policy.

The gentleman at the front desk in the evenings was terrific. He was personable and informative. I wish I remembered his name. Parking in the underground garage was handy with the elevator available to get us up to the second floor. No issues with the garage. We did struggle after dark to make sure we were at the right property the first night, because the building's signs weren't lit up and not where we expected them to be. "Breakfast" is out of packaging similar to a vending machine operation, albeit with more choices than a typical machine. Still, nothing fresh or hot was available other than some fruit. The room had a kitchenette, so we could microwave items. Not what I was expecting, though, for a "breakfast included" kind of hotel. There were issues with the shower. The door didn't work properly, and the control handle was broken. Not ideal. The main bed was comfortable and had an assortment of different kinds of bed pillows from which to choose. The sofa bed came in handy when our grandson came to spend the second night with us. He's a young man and slept like the dead in that sofa bed, so either it was comfortable, or he was so tired that he didn't care. The configuration in the closet and vanity area allowed for lots of storage, so this could be an option if you were in the area for business and needed some space to spread out for an extended stay. There isn't a lobby to speak of; tiny barely covers it. It's a good thing that the rooms are suites, because the public spaces aren't a feature of this place.

Let's start with the good - - Location: 5/5 Not too far from freeways & there are several businesses that are within walkable distance from the hotel. There is a Korean mart across the street and there is another plaza adjacent to the hotel with a Safeway, Michael's, Starbucks, & many other businesses. Considering it was on a street, it was decently quiet, which was nice. - Parking: 4/5 Parking on site & paid, not free. - Cleanliness: Not quite a 4 out of 5, not quite a 3 out of 5, so 3.5/5? If you're expecting 5 star cleanliness where everything is top notch, sparkly clean, then this probably isn't your place. However, for the most part, everything seemed clean. There were a few details in our room that could have used some extra attention. The shower for example, had some dirt & grime that should've been cleansed a bit more thoroughly. However, overall - it was pretty clean. We noticed people were outside constantly cleaning, taking out trash, etc. Alright, now let's get into the details & not so-pleasant aspects of our stay - - Room: Not quite a 3 out of 5, definitely not a 4 or 5 out of 5, so 2.5? 2.8 out of 5 perhaps? From first glance - it's not bad. It was a studio suite with a kitchenette & small balcony. There is a small sofa bed, TV, small dresser, chair, coffee table, work table, & small dining table with 2 chairs, along with the bed. There isn't really any separation, it's just one studio space, which is fine, but do take this into consideration if you're booking the room for more than two people. The kitchenette had 2 induction stoves, with a microwave above it, but our induction stove only had one of the two working. When we discovered that, at that point, it was too late into our stay to try & get a different room so we made it work with the one induction stove. There were basic necessities: a couple of small sauce pans, skillet, toaster, coffee machine, small cutting board, and some basic utensils in the drawer. It'll get the job done for some quick meals. The bathroom is right next to the bed/sleeping area, which we thought was an odd layout. The bathroom, which has the sink, toilet, & standing shower, has a sliding door. And perhaps due to faulty or being poorly designed/maintained - the door doesn't fully close, at all. The closet is also right across from the bathroom & that has sliding doors as well, & dare I say - the closet doors closed more tightly and closely than the bathroom door did. The bathroom doors have gaps on each side of the door; meaning - everyone in the bedroom/living room area of the room can hear everything that happens in the bathroom. They can also slightly see into the bathroom as well. Again, a very odd design choice or needs to be better maintained. This was a slight issue for us because others would be trying to sleep, but due to the lack of door closure of the bathroom, the noise kept everyone up. Perhaps this was a modern take on a remodel, but a normal, regular door that closed would have sufficed. There is also a small vanity area right in between the bathroom and the closet, which again - an odd area as there wasn't very much light in there. There also isn't really anywhere to hang your clothes/towel(s) inside the bathroom except for the one towel rack. The standing shower also doesn't have any ledges to put your personal products on either. There's a built-in with bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, but other than that, if you have your own products, you'll just have to put those on the shower floor. On the bright side, the water pressure was great, if that's something that is important to you. The AC in our room was so loud. It would rattle the AC grates every time it turned on. This made sleeping incredibly difficult as it would make noise all night, but it would be too warm for us to completely turn it off. Unfortunately, because of this, we didn't get as much sleep as we would have liked. - Service: 2 out of 5? 1.8 out of 5? Unfortunately, this was due to one particular staff member. The low rating, unfortunately, is due to one of their staff members. He runs the front desk as part of the night staff & all of our interactions with him were extremely unpleasant. He was dismissive, rude, and overall an unpleasant person to interact with. One of the evenings, we asked for an extra blanket and he told us to open the sofa bed to use the comforter as a blanket. If we wanted a comforter, then we would have done that, but we were requesting a blanket. That was one of several unpleasant interactions with that staff member. We overheard him speak to other guests in the same manner, so it seems this is his normal demeanor, which is unfortunate. Overall - 3/5 Not sure if we'd return, especially if that one night staff member is there.

My biggest complaint is regarding the hotel in Paris, which we were told was in Montmartre, but which was actually right by Gare du Nord station - and in fact, if you look up our hotel it is listed as being in Gare du Nord; an apparently notoriously shady area with tons of pick-pockets. After 5 nights, 1 stolen wallet, and 1 stolen cell phone, we requested to be relocated by our agent. Within an hour, she told us it was impossible. Perhaps she checked every hotel in Paris in less than an hour, and truly there were no options, but she never should have put us there to begin with. Her advice was to take a cab from then on in order to be safer, avoid the graffiti-ridden, shady-looking character littered streets, and nearby metro (adding a great unplanned expense to our trip). When the cab we ordered didn't come in time to take us to a scheduled tour, and I tried to reach her for help, much too late, she said we should have ordered the cab 48 hours in advance (we didn't even have 48 hours notice that we couldn't move hotels) - that since I spent some time in Paris with my daughter 20 years ago, I should have known that. Every single person who found out where we were staying gasped, and said it was a terrible and unsafe location, no surprise we were robbed...twice - restaurant owners, the police, our friend who lives in the countryside in France, fellow travelers on tours. So, why would our travel agent not know? I wouldn't use this agency again, because I feel if an agent is unfamiliar with an area, they owe it to clients to insure their safety by finding out which areas are best, and which are dangerous. That seems basic to me.
