The Flask was our last pub stop on our Hamstead pub crawl. The Flask was a very charming pub, but a lot of the beers on tap were unavailable at only 9:30pm on a Saturday. It also appears we came across the one person in England who doesn't speak English. My husband tried to order two half pints, but the waitress couldn't understand the request. After four attempts my husband gave up and ordered two pints. To our frustration the glass was clearly marked with "half pint" and "pint" indicators. I find it hard to believe that no other customers had ever requested a half pint from this bartender before! Since we had been drinking all night and were starting to suffer from jet lag we only finished half of our beers and left. With a different bartender and a better beer selection I think the Flask would have been a five star experience. read more

Spent a fun afternoon in this pub playing Scrabble and drinking cider. A real locals type hangout in tony Hampstead. The food - mmmm. Banger sandwich with carmelized onions, and the ubiquitous chips. Drenched in malt vinegar, as I like to roll. Perfect snack for two to share. Loved this place. Even though I got my ass handed to me in Scrabble (Cheers, CB!), I'd come back to here in a hot second. read more

This traditional and historic Young's pub has just had a refurbishment which, while retaining all the original features, has nevertheless given it a much-needed cleaner and fresher feel. Built in 1874, the pub has two bars, separated by a glass and panel partition, which has been thoroughly restored - on the Saloon bar side are panels painted by the (appropriately named!) Flemish artist Jan van Beers. The rear of the saloon, which is sub-divided into smaller cosy seating areas, is weirdly carpeted with what looks like a huge brown wool travel rug. Most peculiar. There's also a new conservatory-style dining area. The pub is tucked away in a lane of the same name, just a few paces from the underground station. The beers are standard Young's fare, with the odd guest ale, and seemed decently kept on my last visit. Service seemed OK, although they weren't terribly busy. The biggest change is the new gastro-pub style menu. I haven't eaten there, but the prices seem pretty standard for this sort of grub - about £8-£15 for a main course, although there were cheaper daily specials available, as well as 'platters for sharing' and a range of oysters. But then, we are in Hampstead... Altogether, it's not a bad watering hole for a quiet pint, although I personally prefer the Hollybush, up the hill, which has more character. read more

Friendly staff, crazy locals and free wifi. ps they let doggys in There is no such thing as a "proper" English boozer without the local crazy old men sat outside shouting at the locals! Ha, this place is a proper boozer! Don't let this put you off though, they are completely harmless and the rest of the pub is cracking. Friendly staff, fair priced drinks (for Hampstead anyhoo!), nice pub atmosphere, great house wine, dog friendly, free wifi...the list goes on! If you are out and about this place is just off the high street so misses a few of the tourists, making it a perfect spot to spend an afternoon in. read more

Free wifi, smiling staff, chilled white wine that goes down far to easily, Loli the dog was allowed inside and they gave her water, there were plenty of little areas to find space, sit with a group or dine, the decor is traditional wood and welcoming, there is a good hearty menu, plenty of draught beer and a vibe that says the Flask get the simple things right. As the autumn days get shorter and colder, get your mates together and book a table in the restaurant for Sunday lunch. It will be a completely relaxed, leisurely affair where you can enjoy each others company and great food without over-intrusive service. This is a Young's pub situated own an alley near Hampstead tube. It can get quite crowded on Sundays so if you want food book a table. There were 10 and a half of us and the staff were completely unfazed. We had a massive booth to ourselves and our waitress kept us well lubricated and fed for the next 4 hours! While most of us went for a roast, they also had a cracking steak and Stilton pie on the menu, and pigs knuckle with an impressive amount of crackling. And the nut and mushroom wellington looked pretty tasty too. Sadly we didn't make it to dessert - we were all to stuffed (and tiddly). Went to The Flask on Sunday for lunch with some friends and what a gem. It's hidden away on a narrow walkway which is home to some beautiful shops. On arrival the pub has a lovely atmosphere and the menu looked delicious. I opted for the roast beef and I have to say the waitress was fantastic when I explained I needed it to be gluten-free. She made sure I got gluten-free gravy (a nice touch as usually I have to go gravy-less) and double checked the horseradish cream to be sure but most importantly because she understood my needs she gave me confidence in the food. The food itself when it arrived was absolutely delicious. I just about managed to eat it all but opted to abstain from dessert. My friends all had dessert with most having the crumble and one of them having the waffles which they all said was delicious. The service was excellent and we were never rushed despite having a long leisurely lunch. Definitely recommend if you are ever in Hampstead. read more

Love this pub, the front section has booths and barrels and good old English charm. The food is simple but adequate and staff are friendly and helpful. The back of the pub doesn't quite have the same charm if your booking a table. but as a whole it's very charming. Beer and wine selection isn't anything outstanding but has everything you need or may want. Surprisingly good food awaited us at this old gem just steps from the Hampstead stop on the Underground, in the heart of the village of Hampstead. Pan seared hake with capers and olive oil was cooked perfectly (crispy at the edge, moist and flaky and not dry inside) and presented with roasted potatoes and spring greens. A side of roasted squash and beets were caramelized just right. Service friendly. Cozy and hospitable ambience. Just what you want a good gastropub to be. read more

I came in tonight for a light dinner and would have waited for God knows how long had I not flagged down a waiter. I got the celeriac and apple soup with sourdough. Delicious bread and butter, bland soup. There were a few basic veggie options on the menu- mushroom and brown rice burger and a butternut squash risotto- but these aren't exciting and I thought too pricey for what they were. At nearly 12 quid for each respectively. I passed on them and won't be returning here. read more

A decent Young's pub that can be reached from a couple of alleyways off the main streets in Hampstead. The pub looks nice and the beer was good (Sambrooks Wandle in addition to the usual Young's staples). Wish they could speed up the painfully slow service on what wasn't an especially busy night. The Flask is a throw back to another era and yet is entirely in our century. In looks, you will feel like you are in a pub from 'back when'. They offer good beer (though not as large a selection of craft beer as I'd like) and food. Lovely staff and interesting people. read more

Don't bother ordering the food until this restaurant gets new management or chef! We also waited at least an hour to get our cruddy food. Spent over £13 on a meh burger (not even nearly as good as GBK) with a TINY potion of chips. The chips came in one of those little mental buckets they put chips in at gastropubs, only this one was extra small. Seriously? Saving money on chips? That was it. I am not talking a small portion, I am talking a tiny portion. You shouldn't still be hungry after eating a burger and chips but I was. There was no side salad, nothing. The burger garnishing was sad, if I remember they didn't put a tomato on it, I think there may have been a sad bit of lettuce and burger sauce. Also the bottom of the bun was a bit soggy. The plate it came on looked particularly empty. It didn't taste fresh. The person I was with spent £20 on a tiny portion of duck with salad and was also disappointed. The pub itself is beautiful but it is really let down by its overpriced and sub-par food. Just get a drink and go to another great pub in the area for lunch or dinner. Seriously does not live up to the standard for most of the pubs in the area. read more

This pub manages to keep some of its old world charm, minus years of cigarette smoke and smell of stale beer. Today it's more of a restaurant than pub, and the focus is on the food, although people do still go there just to drink! The food is prepared on the premises from what I know, and includes staples such as fish and chips as well as dishes such as lamb shank, which was great. The prices are reasonable considering The Flask is teetering on being a Disneylandish tourist attraction since it's located in the highly Instagrammable Flask Walk in Hampstead, a few steps from the tube station. The staff and friendly. Beware that at weekends at holidays you may have to wait a long time for a table unless you've booked a day or so ahead which I recommend. read more

Into it! Warm inviting place with a cute rounded bar, a few ales on tap and lovely neighbourhood. We took a short walk from Hampstead Heath and gathered round the giant square table feeling very pleased. Vegetarian options are lacking unfortunately and overall, the food is too expensive. The macaroni cheese was lovely though with fresh mushroom and lovely cheesy sauciness. 3 and 1/2 stars really - but they get the benefit of the doubt. read more

Hampstead Heath is sooo nice though I do not know of many lunch spots there. I went for a drink at the Flask before but never to eat and to my surprise the place was almost empty when I got there. Is this because of summer time maybe ? It was def less crowded all around the Heath so that must be the reason. Anyway got to the flask around 13h and we sat down for lunch on a Sunday. We got the sausage and mash X 2 and the chicken. Guys the chicken at 12 pounds is a WHOLE half chicken served with lottts of veggies, pudding and sauce. It is big yet easy enough to go through because it is a chicken after all. Very nice surprise. Crispy chickey skin. Plenty of juice . Yum. Bangers and mash were full plates of either 3 or 4 big sausages. Very serious plates as well. We did our way through those plates and God that was good. Tasty, juicy, yummy. A good spot for sure. Plus it is located in one of the cutest little street of Hampstead Heath. Feels very village and out of the city. Like a country town. read more

Overpriced ales / beers / spirits. It's in a great location, Flask Walk, but the prices and lack of personality hamper it. Great if it's nice outside and you can hang out in the alley but inside they have the TV on, although no one ever seems to be watching it. The other side, which had a refurb, is alright but the pub still feels like it is missing a soul. Which is a shame considering how old it is. Oh, I got charged near £7 for a bloody mary the bartender didn't know how to make (had to give instruction on how to make it) and it was only a single shot of vodka! read more

I heard and read about the Flask for ages and at last I made a point to go there on a tour surrounding the Heath. Very nice traditional pub with Young's plus guest ales as well. It was the first time for a long time that the barman looked at the pint I drank and ask me to return it because it was cloudy. As a member of CAMRA I appreciated it almost as much as I would have enjoyed the (slightly) cloudy drink. It was good to get (buy!) a bowl of cashew nuts to go with the beer, though they were rather expensive. read more

Nice building that retains pub charm, the front bar of which is happily on the right side of ubiqutious gastro makeover. Back room isn't. Saturday lunch was fine; food really lacked flavour though. The celeriac mash was in fact devoid of any taste. There's a bizarre 4 way bar (throwback to previous era), all four sides of which the same staff must serve. Went here last Sunday and had a really good time. The food was really good. I had the roast lamb and my brother had the Schweinehaxe which he described as amazing. The only problem with this place is that it is a little over priced. I know that London pub's usually are but the prices did put me off returning again. Otherwise can't fault it. This was the absolute, hands down, best food I had in London. The bangers and mash was exquisite and the chicken, bacon and leek pie with kale on the side was to die for. SO SO SO good. And top it off with the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. We sat in the back room which felt like we were in an English garden. Overall, a top notch experience. If you are around the Heath, make a point to go to this pub. read more

an interesting model in how not to redo a pub this new makeover last summer put the focus on ridiculous things like oysters and fresh fish when all you wanted was a decent pub. they also got rid of what was once the best quiz night in London. however, the new decor is quite friendly and they do have lots of beers on tap. maybe they should encourage the staff to smile less though - they're incredibly chirpy and when youre going in there to nurse a pint on your own there's only so much banter you can take. as you can see im fairly ambivalent here but i hope this is useful. read more

Shame as the pub art is amazing - there is a spectate sung on the left of the entrance. Also the front part of the other bar is lovely. However its ruined by the modern dining area totally out of character with the rest of the place, and truly appalling food. Great forma drink but don't eat here!! read more
