I am not against the British, or backpackers for that matter, but the ones who tend to frequent this venue can really be incredibly loud, boisterous and drunk. I have been to the Elephant Wheelbarrow on a few separate occasions (usually when unwillingly dragged by a friend) and my experiences have been somewhat similar each time. A lot of drunk men sometimes sleazy a lot of beer and loud live music. The latter two make the first bearable. The Elephant Wheelbarrow is a traditional pub, it does have some good pub grub and if you are in the mood to meet new people and let loose the Elephant Wheelbarrow is an easy option.

Elephant and Wheelbarrow is just a generally good pub with nice food, a traditional English pub decor and a decent selection of draught and bottled beers. The one thing that makes this place stand out though?? That it is teeming with English people - or more specifically, English backpackers. I'm not sure if that adds to the experience for me or not. On the one hand, the English accents make the pub seem more authentically English, and its easy to meet new people and have a chat over a pint. On the other hand, I constantly get asked about the Ramsey st Neighbours tour, and if I take holidays at Summer Bay. Definitely need another drink or two after those questions, though I would definitely be in the right place for it!

In fact, the only reason you come here is to watch sports, and to be in a bar that is dedicated to sport, but more in its purest form as opposed to a means of making an extra buck. Sure, thus may not be one of my favourite places, but it is certainly better than the other sports bars that I have been to.

Not being on one of the major roads means that this place is a lot quieter than normal, though there was a function out in the beer garden. With a warm fireplace, cozy seating and friendly staff, the Maori Chief provides great service, affordable meals (vegetarian too) and the opportunity to relax amidst a good mix of city workers, artists and local drinkers. Despite this there is probably only one word of warning worth mentioning, and that is that the Chief gets very crowded and equally rowdy when New Zealand are playing Rugby Union, with all matches shown live in the front bar on a huge T.V. Every bite was a mystery of addictively delicious flavors, with crispy yet non-oily chicken, a seasoned breading, and flavorful mashed potatoes--perhaps with added stock. The staff deserves a shout-out--attentive, prompt, and friendly. Despite being a bit off the CBD path I usually tread, discovering a gem like this pub is a delight. Hidden Beer Garden for the layed back client…read more This place is cool, i mean i lived around the corner and sometime you would spend all night there and other just a warm up for the night but either way a cool joint. Good music and a very hipster-esk clientel means its a very relaxed environment and for a smoker like me HEAVEN. They make a mean pizza and the cocktail jugs are a good price and decent. the toilets however were too small and the line a mile long but that was updated recently which is good. it needs a few other things but its a new cool layed back Been Garden which works well. P.s Bring back the Shisha guys!!!
