PJ O'Brien's Irish Pub was a short walk from our Southbank Hotel in Melbourne and after a long tour…read moreday, we were ready for a nice meal in a convenient location. Another couple had been there a few days before and raved about it, so off we went. Although we were seated relatively quickly, ordering was slow, and delivery from the kitchen even more so. OK, the drinks came quickly, although I was served a Heineken (Lager), when I clearly ordered a Kilkenny (Irish Red Ale). That's kind of embarrassing for an Irish Pub to mix up those 2 very different beers. The wait for our dinner so long that a couple just finishing up at the next table offered to try to find our waitress who had disappeared. We found her later at the bar with a friend, probably just off work, and with a poor handoff. Someone else eventually delivered our meals, which was pretty good, particularly Gayle's Chicken Parma. My issue was that half of my Mussels were "welded shut", despite my messy attempts. After several minutes of trying to find someone, I basically told that flustered person to take the plate away because I was done with this place. To the restaurant's credit, they took the Mussels off the tab with a half- hearted apology at the cash register, not our table. A much need snack at the local 7-11 finished off my evening meal. Let's just call it a bad night from a franchise Irish Pub that failed these customers.

But the food isn't bad either, not bad at all. In fact, it's pretty good. They've got a $20 lunch menu that includes a drink (house wine, beer, cider, or soft drink), which is a pretty good deal considering the portion sizes here are on the larger side. I came here with some former colleagues of mine and we all enjoyed our meals. I love that this place offers not one but TWO vegan options, and both are clearly marked on the menu -- the zucchini and macadamia burger, and the quinoa and black rice salad. I'm almost always in the mood for a burger over a salad, so I went with the burger. You have to specify vegan, so they'll take the cheese off and put it in a pumpkin-seed vegan bun ($2 extra -- their regular buns are not vegan). The zucchini and macadamia burger was delish. I really enjoyed it and would happily go back and order it again. Not wild about paying $2 extra for a vegan bun, but given the owner of this place also owns Father's Office and their vegan burger didn't even COME with a bun (sorry lettuce wrap, I require carbs) -- really, I didn't mind paying the extra two dollars. Staff was knowledgeable and accommodating, but the food was painfully slow to come out. That's my only real gripe with this place. The atmosphere is amazing (thanks to the historic charm of the building), the food is tasty, the service was nice enough, but the food was way too slow to arrive. Not great if you're in the middle of a work day and just wanted a lunch that would take around an hour or less. This lunch took closer to an hour and a half, and I'd say the restaurant was about 60-70% full, not completely full. So I wouldn't advise coming here when you're in a hurry to get back to the office. Other than that, though, we really enjoyed our meals and the experience. I'd definitely recommend it.

I do think I like it MORE than Bistro Gitan. From the outside, you could be forgiven for thinking this was a pub, rather than an elevated casual french restaurant. Inside it's really nice and right off the bat the waiters and staff were friendly and greeted everyone warmly. We sat at a table right near the open kitchen, and it was fun to watch the chefs preparing the food. Practically everything we ordered was delicious. I had the Tuna Crudo which was soooo good, and the Duck for main (which was the only negative of the night) with the Gratin Dauphinois and for dessert (yes, three courses since the food was so good), the Bomb Alaska, which was a special of the day. The negative for the duck was that the two of us that ordered it, found it to be very gristly, fatty and hard to chew. I just couldn't face another bite. But the entree, the rest of the main and the dessert were incredible, and the service was fantastic. Food came out all together in one hit (something I love about a good restaurant), and they didn't clear the plates until everyone at the table had finished (also top service) and they knew who ordered which dish when it came out. Prices are a teeny on the high side, but I guess most places are these days. I would DEFINITELY come back here again. Parking is easy, nice ambience, great food and I highly recommend it!

I ate upstairs at the steakhouse and found the atmosphere nice and warm. I started with an order of onion rings (and of course a drink, a Negroni) and found the rings to be a good flavor. I then had a 500 g bone in ribeye (and ate every bit of it) along with an order of brussels sprouts. The steak was spiced perfectly, was generally tender and had a nice flavor profile. The brussels sprouts were excellent. I opted for the peppercorn sauce on the side and didn't use much of it. I was offered a selection of mustard and chose a spicy mustard that had grape flavor. Overall, this was a decent place to eat and worth the slightly high price that good steakhouses command. Isn't the best steakhouse you can go to in the City, no, but it is better than most. I would recommend anything from a business meal to a small gathering of 6 to 8 people. It was a nice meal and experience in a historic building.
