Despite having neat animals and friendly workers....this place is a dump and should be condemned. If you think I'm lying....go see for yourself. It is a cross contamination disaster waiting to happen for it's workers, clients...and saddest yet...the animals. I guarantee the food you by there is contaminated by either foul feces or rodent droppings. This means risk to you the handler, and to the one you feed with it. Yes...the place is old. But there is just NO excuse to keep a business this filthy. The animals are all crammed into cages too small for them and covered in their own waste. The food for sale is mostly open to collect bacteria, the floors are disgusting and HUGE dust webs/bunnies cover all ceiling and fixtures. Hasn't been cleaned in decades for sure. You buy from this place...yes...you save the animals. But you also encourage and support a terrible act of bad business at it's finest. Very gross and disappointing...clean up youe act over there! Update...the owner says "Dust, dirt, rodents and bad smells, are part of our business of dealing with animals and feed". Not true. If so, why isn't every pet store and zoo getting reviews like mine? read more

I've been coming here for the past three years for my chicken and dog supplies and I wouldn't go anywhere else! The staff is very knowledgeable and courteous. Not only do they stock traditional "big store brand" feed like Purina but also organic options as well so you can buy exactly what you want. Im also grateful that they will take in your chickens as well if you can no longer care for them. I've had to take several roosters here due to city noise ordinance, and I feel that my roosters were safe there (but not without a sad goodbye ). They carry so much in the realm of small animal supplies so anyone with a pet will find something for their fur/feather baby. read more

I went around October to buy my little budgies and they layed their eggs already and I'm so excited about that. They also have a variety of different animals here I'm going back to buy a baby duck if they have any! Lastly the prices for the animal food you buy is super good! I love the Feed Store. I dropped in last fall to pick up some pumpkins/corn stalks/etc and found so many fun and yummy things for my dogs. They have any feed you need. Premium dog foods - wet and dry, cat too. All sorts of bird feed and any other feed you want in sacks all over the store. As far as dog treats, I get the different types of jerky, pig ears, bones, and assorted treats by the pound. Collars/leashes/harnesses galore. They have chickens, pigeons, ducks, and assorted pet birds in the back. All for sale. Rabbits too, all kinds. Always friendly, no-nonsense service. Competitive pricing. Always check your receipt if you buy items because they will over charge you. they are very sneaky !!!! Too bad, I came today all the way from Arlington Heights and the lady tried to over charge me two separate times ( 2 separate visits). they also rush you to pay. when I tried to check my items they ignored me. i checked items myself and saw the overcharges. I went back and they changed it but they were acting upset. Imagine how much money has been stolen. the IRS should investigate them. especially, if you have a foreign accent be careful!!!! I have always had feelings they were double taxing or overcharging me, but today I caught them red handed!!! read more

Gross. This place is dirty and messy. This place claims to be a feed store but apparently they can't decide what they are because I noticed they sell animals too--and they don't seem well cared for. Birds and rabbits kept in tiny cages without food or water. How shameful. Not sure if they breed these animals themselves or just buy them from breeders, but either way they're only supporting the abusive pet trade and it's disgraceful. Don't come here unless you want to support cruelty and get overcharged. Do not recommend. read more

I had been going to the Feed Store for almost 20 years and have always been treated courteously and the staff was always very helpful. They have an amazing inventory. It reminds me of a real out in the country general store for farmers. I am a bird person and I study Ornithology and am an Audabon member so I have been buying my various kinds of bird seed there for my feeders on a regular basis. However things seem to have changed there in the last 6 months to a year. The people @ the counter never make eye contact with me anymore and have an indifference that is almost borderline rude. Then one day I went there to make a purchase of some safflower and custom birdseed and the guy who took my credit card was extremely rude and wouldn't talk to me, thank me for my purchase, or even say hello. When I asked the guy who was putting the merchandise into my trunk what was wrong he said that I ignored him when I first drove up when he asked if he could help me and said that I was ignorant. I honestly didn't hear him and I certainly would have responded if I did. Then he proceeded to block my path to get to my car door and started criticizing me and calling me names. It's sad that I will never go to that place again because I really liked that place in the past. They have a good setup: they just need to change the personnel. I honestly thought I was going to have to call the police if he didn't let me get into my car. read more

Wonderful! I love this place. I'm Indiana born and raised - that's a state where they have something called FARMS and LIVESTOCK and FEED STORES :). Feed stores were a normal everyday thing to me so when I stepped in here I felt like I was right back "home" :) Its funny how you get to miss a simple thing like a Feed Store but let me tell you, you do. I love that it's a family run business and they talk reeaaalll slow, which always make me feel like I'm not in Chi town anymore and ya gotta love that. Awesome and excellent. If you have kids you should def take them here so they get a feel of what's it like to NOT be in Chicago for a bit. They have chickies and rabbits and all kindsa feed here plus very knowledgeable about bird feeders and such. Great people; great store; hope they are always around. read more

Family run for years and the service shows.. they are very friendly and greet you right away and get you started on the right path. I have been going to this store for a few years now. It seems to be under new management. Children perhaps? I regularly buy bird seed, peanuts, and other feed for animals as well as other items. Decent price I thought. I visited and bought custom mix bird seed on Aug.16 2021 and bag felt light. When it was weighed by the store it was 2.5 lbs. light. They had a pallet full of 40lb. Bags which were seperated into 20 lb. bag I was told. The store representative said the scale was broken but would be fixed. I was given a small bag with he difference. No harm I thought just an honest mistake. Since then my wife has picked up bird seed and peanuts for squirrels twice. Today I returned to purchase the same items. Again the custom mix was light so I had them weigh it and it was 1.5 lbs. light. It turns out they all were. And were to be pulled off the shelf. I was told again by manager that the scale was broken. I was given the difference in feed but how many bags had they sold in that time knowing there scale was bad? All my items purchased today feel light. I had no idea I was getting ripped off all this time. POOR BUSINESS read more

I do not have pets. I do, strangely enough, have a need for bales of hay and straw on occasion (what girl in the city doesn't?). For $10 a bale, it's the closest place I can find to downtown Chicago to fill my farmer needs. In a former life, did have pets - rabbits, horses, dogs. If I still had said pets, this would be my jam - everything you need for any kind of animal. And I love the smell of a feed store. I walk in, they guy holding the door for me what I need, and I tell him about how I just moved to OP and have some new feeders and want some better food than what they have at Menards. He says, they can't get cheaper than Menards, but they were pretty comparable as far as I could tell. And here they even carried the bag out to my car. The guy was a wealth of knowledge, and helped me pick out a good thistle feeder that the squirrels won't destroy, hopefully. Only thing was I wish I could have browsed, but I didn't say I was 'just browsing.' Definitely will be back. read more

This place is great. I used to live right down Harlem from here and would get things for the yard. Their prices are amazing. I have a red bellied parrot that goes through a decent amount of food and is picky. I can customize what food she gets and get about 4lbs of food for less than a small bag at the pet store. WOW, what a great place... It was so nice to shop at a smaller feed store. Great Service, Great People... they can think outside the box. It was very refreshing to walk around and look at all the interesting items in their store. My grandson loves to go and look around. In the Spring they have all the chick babies. They a I purchased 15 ISA Brown 2 day old female chicks in April/2008. They are great layers, giant brown eggs, great tasting. My hens are just so sweet and affectionate. read more

Found this place by accident after reading about it online. Drove by and turned back around and drove down the alley to get to their parking lot...of the most gorgeous chickens or hens I've ever seen. It's the cutest most eclectic country store that seems to take you back in time 100 years. The gentleman that helped me was phenomenal and gave me samples to give my super picky baby American Bully Pup. Although I went in right before close..I never felt rushed and was helped with the utmost of courtesy. The items are fresh and of the highest quality. 100% UNIQUIE I happened across the feed store after moving into the neighborhood just NE of it (Forest View). Driving down Harlem, The Feed Store is located just south of I55 on the west side of the street. They have their own farm-y looking parking lot. Upon entering the feed store I suspect you'll be cheerfully greeted - as I have been the last three times I was there, by no less than three people all asking if I needed any help, etc. The feed Store has an amazing amount of animal food & feed! If you have the pet, they have the food (& the pets...more on that later): Horse food Monkey Food Duck Food Pigeon Food Bird Food Outdoor Species Specific Bird Seed Dog Food Cat Food ....way too much to list! So far I have bought Bird Food, Wild Bird Seed, and even grass seed to repair my lawn. I think the prices are competitive and I enjoy the information they provide regarding birds and seed. I even had a strapping young man carry my bag to my car for me...nice. Animals!!!! If you would like to raise some yard egg laying chickens you can find them here very affordably! They seemed to have a couple of different breeds as well as ducks, homeing pigeons, carrier pigeons, dove pairs, parakeets, finches, and bunnies! They will encourage you to ask your municipality if you might have 2-3 chickens in your backyard for eggs. (You do not need the rooster for this & Chickens are quiet w/o the rooster). If you have a free afternoon stop by the feed store and checkout what they have - you forget how close you are to the city...until one of the young men says: "oh no, the chickens are out on Harlem Avenue again!" read more
