Bedside table with coffee service lacking coffee!
    Holly T.

In celebration of our 35th wedding anniversary, we decided a trip to New Braunfels was the perfect way to commemorate the occasion. Because we're in the time of The Plague, we made sure to do some research before committing to the trip. Since our top five places to visit appeared to be open for business, we contacted The Faust (a place we've stayed many times) for accommodations. While the price seemed quite reasonable, our experiences made it less so. We knew going in that our room would be small which is not unheard of in historic hotels. We were made aware that the bed would be a double which was okay, although we generally hope for a queen. The trip to New Braunfels was delightfully uneventful and even though we'd gotten a late start, it was still light when we arrived. Now this is a small thing but I do like getting an actual key which is what The Faust provides -- the only problem is the lock mechanism was persnickety so getting into the room usually took a few tries. The room itself was tiny as advertised with an almost laughably small bathroom. The toilet was right next to the shower stall and had no lid, so it was virtually impossible to bathe without getting the toilet seat wet. The towel rack was right over the toilet, too. The sink was in the right corner of the bathroom and a small ledge ran from the shower stall to the doorway. Some items could be put on this ledge, but not many. There was also a slightly slanted glass shelf under the mirror that held face towels and toiletries on it, or it tried to. The Faust supplies lotion, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner in tubes that have an unfortunate tendency to roll off of whatever surface they are on. A lot of bending and retrieving went on... A plus, and there were not nearly enough pluses, was that the bed, while small, was extremely comfortable. Yay! There was a bedside table on one side of the bed, but not the other. Grrr. A lamp for my husband, but none for me. It was a dim room already, and the lack of a lamp on my side did not help. The one bedside table had the coffee service set up in the form of a single serve Keurig machine (dusty), cups, packets with sugar, nondairy creamer and stirrers, but no coffee! This was discovered in the morning when you really need coffee to function. Because I am not really trying to write a short story or novella, I'll get to the main issues that we had with The Faust on this visit. The person, a woman, that we dealt with most often failed to provide basic, useful communication about the hotel and its COVID protocol and projected a decidedly don't-give-a-s**t attitude toward us as guests. Things that it would have been nice to know at the beginning of our stay include: for safety reasons no maid service of any type would be provided and all toiletries, towels, or whatever else might be needed could be obtained at the front desk. Seems like an easy thing to say to a guest when he/she is checking in. Not only could it be said, it could be communicated in a friendly, maybe even slightly apologetic way as hotels/motels usually provide such services as a matter of course. Were it my hotel, I'd even go so far as to ask guests if they wanted fresh towels brought up to them each morning. Yes, I know we shouldn't kill the planet and I probably would have said no, but still... Two more pluses!! When we checked out, there were two very nice people who displayed all the cordiality and pleasantness that had been lacking up to that point. And... we left something behind at The Faust which of course we discovered when we were almost home. I called and talked to a very nice guy (one of the people at check out) who carefully took all my information so that he could reunite us with our possession. Two days later our Clef du Vin (look it up, it's cool!) arrived unscathed. Final note: Yes, I know these are difficult times for everyone and to a degree we are all dealing with some unknowns. But this the hospitality industry we're talking about here and if your protocols change to fit the current situation, it's pretty important to communicate those changes to your guests. My suggestion to The Faust is to update their website to reflect COVID procedures and to train staff to provide this information at check in.

Stop by the Faust and enjoy a Spicey Bloody Maria to warm you up. Good food, great service and trivia to boot!

We always enjoy our Thursdays at Faust! The food is really great, not everyday bar fare! Drinks are tasty and the staff is very friendly. All of this in a lovely setting! #SanAntonioTrivia#FaustHotel

A room at the Faust gives you the feeling of going back in time. For a specific kind of jaded business traveler, or a couple who don't want to bother going all the way to Europe, this hotel is super cool. The bar has character, Dana and the staff are just quirky enough to remind you life isn't all about money. (In case you forgot.)

The property and grounds are absolutely beautiful and peaceful. We had a large, fully equipped conference room, the Guadalupe room with a ceiling mounted projector and good WiFi. Breakfast was good and I ordered it because we wanted to start on time and not worry about getting food. They set up breakfast sandwiches and danish and coffee/water and kept it refilled. My room was 311, right in front of the pool with beautiful views of the river. The balcony was super nice and I enjoyed a little time working outside before I had to go to the conference. There was a nice desk in the room to work as well. There are many places to go outside to sit and relax, from Adirondack chairs to loungers and seating areas right near the river. Complaints: The air conditioner kept going off in the middle of the night. Also, there was some smell of mildew in the room from time to time. Otherwise, wonderful place and I will return to stay again.

Yesterday I checked in ahead of time with my arrival time and selected my room as they allowed. Specifically choosing it for its quiet location and proximity to stairs. When you do this you get a confirmation that literally says "you're checked in!" And gives you the room number and then says you can bypass the front desk and head straight to the room with your digital key. 3 pm rolls around as I'm driving into the parking lot as planned and no digital key. I go to the front desk and the gaslighting ensues: yeah they choose poor wording is the response to "I've already checked in my it says my room isn't ready". Then he tried to switch me to 415. 415 is behind elevators. The exact opposite of the quiet I selected ahead of time. Then he says or you have have 20something (this hotel is wood construction and you can hear walking on the floors above.) He says he'll take my number and call when it's ready after I say I'll wait. Nah I'll just sit in the lobby. A few minute go by and I get a notification my room is ready- 415- the room I said no thank you to. I say nothing. A few more minutes. "Your room is ready" and I come up to the desk with my cards. And he tries to give me another room- another one I didn't ask for. In the center of the hallway. And I've had it before and know it has some electrical wiring crossed in the lighting. I again decline and say I'll wait. I don't know why it has to be this difficult and dishonest/gaslit. If you're not going to honor reservations just say that so I can choose to go elsewhere.

It always had a welcoming, rustic, hill-country feel to it that matched the surroundings. Our last stay I was really disappointed at the changes that had been made to the decor mostly because they make no sense and did not improve the property in any way. I sincerely hope that the owners did not pay for this decor design. It's pretty awful. (And kind of funny bc it's ALL over the place). What used to be rustic and charming now seems to be modern (gold fixtures, tiled shower, trash cans) asian (black trim, bathroom doors, headboard fabric), kitschy (lasso bedside lamps- that aren't good for reading and don't dim), with a 50's retro flair (the refrigerator and the blue tooth), and modern cowboy art on the walls. Yet, no one thought to include charging ports for electronics! It's so confusing. They pulled out the nice big tub and put in a shower that doesn't have a door and has a shower head with no pressure and no direction to it- so to say it plainly, it's difficult to get clean! Amongst all the changes perhaps fixing the toilet so it doesn't randomly run might have been a good choice. One of the reasons we use to like to stay were the delicious breakfast tacos that were provided. I don't know if they will come back or not as the lobby was under construction, but based on the decor choices my guess is they will make some equally terrible decision regarding the lobby and maybe do away with it all together? Who knows! What it has going for it is that the views are amazing (thankfully they couldn't change that or my guess is they would have)! The bed was comfortable and the towels were top notch. Maybe if you've never been before you won't find it as disturbing but I just had a hard time reconciling the fact that they paid to make the place worse. We might have to find different digs when we're in the area.
