Oldest continuously run hotel in Texas.
Anita C.

Stay here! It's not a Holiday Inn but it is breath taking beautiful Victorian style hotel built in 1898. The staff are great. Although I have never stayed here I am here quite often, downstairs at the bar! They have recently had a change in bar management but before that were offering great live music. The atmosphere in the bar is very different. It is dark but romantic. They only serve beer and wine. So be warned. I have had plenty of tours around and inside the place. Not only does it have the rooms inside the Inn but it owns the stables next door that they have turned into Texas themed rooms, a huge room on the back at was formerly their stables and a little house like room that a family can stay in. It is always clean and inviting. I have spoken to many who have stayed here and they love it! I recommend it to all visiting NB. Stay here! You won't be disappointed.

Love chillin on the patio!

Chill, reportedly haunted, great breakfast. Stayed in the Texas room. Nice staff laid back, had A downtown new Orleans/Paris feel. Great to sit in the courtyard and play tourist in a quaint Texas town with much to offer within walking distance.(boutique shopping/wine tasting, saloon hopping or bakeries). Especially the basement piano bar with a great chocolate martini served in an ice cold crystal tini glass...class! This is right up on a main street, so don't expect a quiet retreat. Within 10 minute drive to most any major store, restaurant and movie theater. Would stay again! Would classify as kid friendly and a great venue for a bachelorette party or gals/guys weekend out!

Carls Suite, where full country breakfast is served every morning.

The front desk staff was amazing--especially Ms. Cynthia, who was beyond kind and truly went above and beyond to make our stay great. There was even a Starbucks inside the hotel. The River is beautiful and the courtyard of the hotel just seals the deal. This hotel was definitely very nice, and I would 100% stay here again. I will definitely be visiting again!

The property and grounds are absolutely beautiful and peaceful. We had a large, fully equipped conference room, the Guadalupe room with a ceiling mounted projector and good WiFi. Breakfast was good and I ordered it because we wanted to start on time and not worry about getting food. They set up breakfast sandwiches and danish and coffee/water and kept it refilled. My room was 311, right in front of the pool with beautiful views of the river. The balcony was super nice and I enjoyed a little time working outside before I had to go to the conference. There was a nice desk in the room to work as well. There are many places to go outside to sit and relax, from Adirondack chairs to loungers and seating areas right near the river. Complaints: The air conditioner kept going off in the middle of the night. Also, there was some smell of mildew in the room from time to time. Otherwise, wonderful place and I will return to stay again.

Yesterday I checked in ahead of time with my arrival time and selected my room as they allowed. Specifically choosing it for its quiet location and proximity to stairs. When you do this you get a confirmation that literally says "you're checked in!" And gives you the room number and then says you can bypass the front desk and head straight to the room with your digital key. 3 pm rolls around as I'm driving into the parking lot as planned and no digital key. I go to the front desk and the gaslighting ensues: yeah they choose poor wording is the response to "I've already checked in my it says my room isn't ready". Then he tried to switch me to 415. 415 is behind elevators. The exact opposite of the quiet I selected ahead of time. Then he says or you have have 20something (this hotel is wood construction and you can hear walking on the floors above.) He says he'll take my number and call when it's ready after I say I'll wait. Nah I'll just sit in the lobby. A few minute go by and I get a notification my room is ready- 415- the room I said no thank you to. I say nothing. A few more minutes. "Your room is ready" and I come up to the desk with my cards. And he tries to give me another room- another one I didn't ask for. In the center of the hallway. And I've had it before and know it has some electrical wiring crossed in the lighting. I again decline and say I'll wait. I don't know why it has to be this difficult and dishonest/gaslit. If you're not going to honor reservations just say that so I can choose to go elsewhere.

It is an amazing location. We walk to our dinner reservations. They also serve wine in the lobby in the evening. The breakfast served in the morning was so good! The view from our table of the pool and the river was just beautiful. At breakfast, we all loved the yogurt parfait. It had crushed pineapple and kiwi. They had sausage, biscuits, and gravy, beautiful quiche, Pastries, so many beverage options. Everyone was so impressed. We all very much enjoyed our stay at the Gruene River Inn.

It always had a welcoming, rustic, hill-country feel to it that matched the surroundings. Our last stay I was really disappointed at the changes that had been made to the decor mostly because they make no sense and did not improve the property in any way. I sincerely hope that the owners did not pay for this decor design. It's pretty awful. (And kind of funny bc it's ALL over the place). What used to be rustic and charming now seems to be modern (gold fixtures, tiled shower, trash cans) asian (black trim, bathroom doors, headboard fabric), kitschy (lasso bedside lamps- that aren't good for reading and don't dim), with a 50's retro flair (the refrigerator and the blue tooth), and modern cowboy art on the walls. Yet, no one thought to include charging ports for electronics! It's so confusing. They pulled out the nice big tub and put in a shower that doesn't have a door and has a shower head with no pressure and no direction to it- so to say it plainly, it's difficult to get clean! Amongst all the changes perhaps fixing the toilet so it doesn't randomly run might have been a good choice. One of the reasons we use to like to stay were the delicious breakfast tacos that were provided. I don't know if they will come back or not as the lobby was under construction, but based on the decor choices my guess is they will make some equally terrible decision regarding the lobby and maybe do away with it all together? Who knows! What it has going for it is that the views are amazing (thankfully they couldn't change that or my guess is they would have)! The bed was comfortable and the towels were top notch. Maybe if you've never been before you won't find it as disturbing but I just had a hard time reconciling the fact that they paid to make the place worse. We might have to find different digs when we're in the area.

After the situation, the hotel manager that day did call to let us know how sorry she was and would work to try to make the situation right. Mr. Patel, the hotel owner, called and said he would reimburse us for the weekend with rewards points (we stayed two nights and this happened at 8 am the first morning). He rewarded us HALF the total for the weekend, meaning we are still going to be paying for this traumatizing experience out of pocket. I understand the rate for points for different locations can change, but when I look up their rate, I can see that we only received enough points to cover ONE DAY. We will NOT be going back.

I've been a loyal Hilton rewards member for a very long time. I travel frequently for work and always opt to stay in a nice hotel, which up until this point has been a Hilton branded hotel. This trip was with my family for a weekend vacation. I prefer clean and consistent accommodations and have no problem paying the price for that consistency. This hotel is hands down the worst one I have been in. It's outdated, run down and the room was dirty. Upon walking into the room we were met with a musty odor that even the kids mentioned. One of the beds had a piece of an onion stuck on the comforter. There was food and candy on the floors from previous guests. The furniture shows hard use and didnt appear to have much more done to it than a partial wipe down. The walls were covered in dust. You could see wipe marks that were not done recently and months more dust had accumulated. I turned on the air conditioner to circulate some air in the room only to realize that it just filled the room with a urine smell. At this point I went to the front desk to see about getting a different room due to the issues. I was informed no additional rooms were available for the evening. The front desk person gave me a bottle of febreeze and told me it was the best he had to offer. We didn't get checked in until 930 pm and were exhausted after the drive. We decided to try to make the best of it since we were not going to be in the room much the following day. There is nothing quite as frustrating as completely dreading going back to the room for rest due to the awful accommodations. I have read other reviews at this point and am incredibly frustrated that you can no longer select a hotel based off of its name and have some sort of expectation met. This is not the first bad review of this location and certainly won't be the last. Especially considering the way management maintains the property and corporate clearly no longer has a standard they enforce. I'd recommend you save yourself the trouble and book elsewhere.
