The Fat Cat, a historic pub.
    Thomas M.

The Fat Cat is a legendary old pub in the Kelham Island area of Sheffield, associated with the Kelham Island Brewery. It's one of the city's most recommended waterholes, and indeed people go there for a nice, relaxed pint, or five. It's not much in terms of decor (especially the rather bare guest room to the left of the premises. I'd recommend to sit in the bar room part of the pub. The bar itself has an original design (see photo). The owner is a friendly elderly fellow, and knowledgeable about the beers. When I visited yesterday there was also a spunky, lively young woman behind the bar who enjoyed chatting with the rather "mature" clientèle. This is a bar for old boozers, so don't expect any fancy people here. Which is just as well if you ask me. There are limited food options, but frankly, this place is all about the beers. There's a fair sampling of the Kelham Island range, but there guest ales, too - and remarkably, not one but two German cloudy wheat beers, Erdinger and Schneider Weisse. The Kelham beers are great value at about £ 2.30 per pint, the imported wheat beers clock in at £ 4 and up. The Kelham Island Museum of Sheffield's industrial history is just around the corner, so you might feel tempted to combine the two.

As had been said before there isnt a lot to do here its very limited entertainment wise. Clearly full of beer buffs as it has its only breward next door and to be fair the beer was top notch. Same couldnt be said about the food, in fairness i did go on a busy day but was presented with a cold stilton pasta (should have been warm) and a bit of salad i wouldnt have fed my RABBIT! Beer= YES Food=NO

Bravest businessman I know founded brewery n fat cat. Follow in his footsteps. Study microbrewing at Sheffield university.

What can I say about this pub that has not already been said? In brief: No Sky No television No Juke Box No Music No smoking room (25 years before pubs went no smoking) No pool table No bandits No quiz machines Real ale, 10 of, 4 from The Kelham Island Brewery next door. Real hearty home made food Real coal fires Really welcoming hosts Real patrons Real ale beer garden A real Fat Cat (see if you can spot her hidey hole) It's own brewery next door ! If you like Real Ale and good conversation with your friends in relaxed and comfortable surroundings, then this is a pub you really must try. http://www.thefatcat.co.uk/

As one other poster commented, the place has recently been renovated, so it is very clean and in good order. The selection of beer is nice and I personally enjoyed making my way in trying out the line of Sam Smiths brews. The price of the beer is also "extremely" inexpensive... so a little money goes a long way here. On the down side and due to the prices, this place can get busy and there is a good number of the people who've clearly had a pint or two too many. From the few times I visited here, it seems there was a group of seniors which were getting themselves pickled and if they were to die that very night they probably would not need embalming. I also didn't find the staff to be very friendly. They were not mean, but not overly sociable either. In the end, if you are with a group of people and in the neighborhood, then this is the place to come for a round or two, and then move onto your your next location.

It's probably the only bar and restaurant to also be a maze, its HUGE and other than outdoor seating it surely doesn't feel like you're entering a restaurant. They have 3 sets of two doors but strangely only one is in use and there is no sign for this, once inside you basically go back on yourself into a dark, dingy, horrible corner where they have the lift. After leaving the lift, finding the main restaurant is equally as puzzling and difficult. Admittedly, the decor in the restaurant is unique and innovative and true style of The New World Company restaurants, albeit I preferred the Media City branch, there were many similarities with trees, huts etc. It to me felt like an old bank or barn but refurbished, possibly even a potential wedding venue. I dined here during an ongoing promotion where they offered 40% off the food bill in January and ordered my regular Chicken and Chorizo Hanging Kebab which would usually come to £13.95. I did notice the menu to be slightly stained and sticky however service was reasonable with the waitress (Becca), seems to do a lot, despite not being overly busy she seemed to have a huge workload due to them appearing understaffed and she still worked in a friendly and polite manner which is commendable. They do also offer a set menu all year round however this still at £12.95 for two courses this still ends up costing slightly more than the 40% off promotion, so I have no idea why I was offered it. Also, I found it strange that they labelled dairy-free and vegetarian on both menus but only NG (non-gluten) on the regular menu, meaning if you did order from the set menu, you'd have to cross-check between them. Sadly the slight cleanliness issue which arose with the menus seemed to continue with the cutterly (ready on the table) which also wasn't entirely clean sadly which also is uncommon by usual Botanist standards. I did enjoy the majority of my kebab, while I do feel the garlic seemed to taste more overpowering and heavy than other branches, I did also find the meat on the ends to taste a little chewy and overcooked, while the middle was fine. It still had some good flavours and was rather enjoyable and certainly warranted good value for money, even at 50% off. Certainly not the best branch of The Botanist I've been too, but my food was still pretty good, as was most aspects of my experience. I do feel a lot of small improvements do need to be made, however, only warranting a three-star rating for now.

We ate possibly the best whitebait I have eaten - certainly recently - flash fried and delicious; chorizo & lamb kidneys - an inspired combination; 2 full roast lunches, one beef, one pork with roasted root veg, Yorkshire puddings, gravy and mashed potato (oh, and a piece of broccoli - got to have greens - well, not me, obviously) - juicy pork with crackling & rare English beef - dribble. Then, quite a lot later (the staff kept on asking if we were OK) we had dessert - apple suet pudding with blackberry soup - excellent and a Bakewell tart of perfection with crème anglaise (by this I mean the custard was of a slender consistency) and poached blueberries. Truly, perfection. A cafetière of good coffee served with a jug of milk & one of cream, if you please, helped us to digest before we tottered back to the bus. Comfortable, friendly, excellent service with well considered, well presented food of gastronomic quality. There are bedrooms - maybe next time. Apparently they have won awards for their breakfast...

Sheffield is a city that I know almost as well as Manchester, and it has some wonderful little hidden gems, such as The Howard. It's a proper pub, with a good range of food and booze available, both at very reasonable prices. For entertainment, there is a pool table and quiz machines available, a Monday evening Happy Hour which drops the already low prices to circa £2 a pint (depending on what your tipple of choice is), plenty of big screen T.V.s if you fancy watching the football, and they are no strangers to having live music from some of Sheffield's local talent. I was last in on Friday night, and it was super quiet, which was a shame as usually there is a great weekend atmosphere in The Howard. However, I got chatting to the manager whilst waiting for a friend, and he informed me that unfortunately their refurbishment has been pushed back, so lots of the regular faces weren't aware they're still open! I love coming here for a quiet pint, either on my own while waiting for a train, as a pre-club watering hole, or meeting people for a catch-up. The staff are friendly and chatty, and the location of the pub makes it a great little spot to visit. I highly recommend it!
