Lunch instead of a long walk. We had heard that this was a good place to eat. And it was. We meant to go for a long walk but it was cold, very cold and we got settled in and the three course meal seemed like a good idea. And it was. We drank Black Sheep bitter. We ate possibly the best whitebait I have eaten - certainly recently - flash fried and delicious; chorizo & lamb kidneys - an inspired combination; 2 full roast lunches, one beef, one pork with roasted root veg, Yorkshire puddings, gravy and mashed potato (oh, and a piece of broccoli - got to have greens - well, not me, obviously) - juicy pork with crackling & rare English beef - dribble. Then, quite a lot later (the staff kept on asking if we were OK) we had dessert - apple suet pudding with blackberry soup - excellent and a Bakewell tart of perfection with crème anglaise (by this I mean the custard was of a slender consistency) and poached blueberries. Truly, perfection. A cafetière of good coffee served with a jug of milk & one of cream, if you please, helped us to digest before we tottered back to the bus. Comfortable, friendly, excellent service with well considered, well presented food of gastronomic quality. There are bedrooms - maybe next time.
