The Devonshire Cat used to be a favourite of mine when I lived in Sheffield and I usually drop in when i'm back that way across the Pennines. I think this place is great, if it was situated in the centre of Manchester it'd be rammed all day every day but it's just a bit of the main walks in Sheffield, but still pulls in a good crowd. The venue is nothing special but has a homely old put feel it with a tad of weatherspoons mixed in, I think they could do better on this front, but that's not why people visit. This definately isn't a weatherspoons though this is a place for the Beer / Ale Conniseur in all of us. Having a a flick through their hefty beer/ Ale / Cider menu and looking at the extensive guest list you feel like a kid in a candy shop! This might just be Sheffield, but when I ordered a specialty beer I was immediately told it was £4.50 with a earnest look, meaning I could choose something more palitable for less than £4. I'm just not used to this when half one Manchester will charge you more than this for a Peroni from a dirty tap with gritty aftertones! There's a lot of local brewaries in Sheffield so you can get some really good ales at some fantastic prices. So if you in Sheffield definately make it a stop on your bar / pub tour! Theres so much to choose from but its definately worth having a pit stop at the Devonshire Cat! read more

I am such a fan of the Dev. We tend to visit Sheffield a few times a year for gigs and festivals (including "Resistanz Festival" which has occurred over Easter for the past 4 years). Round the corner from the festival/gig venue/nightclub "Corporation" (see previous review http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/corporation-sheffield), it's a perfect cosy hideaway when you're a bit... Rocked Out. The Dev is a real ale pub with a warm, welcoming and friendly vibe. From experience, sometimes a venue (and the locals that frequent it) can be a bit funny when a large number of gofficks descend on their space. I am pleased to say this isn't the case with the Dev. A large venue with seating for about 100 people, the Dev has a very large selection of bottled and cask ales and Ciders from around the world. They also offer a good choice of spirits (and make a mean Bloody Mary). If you're a bit foxed as to what to chose after perusing their ale menu, the staff are always on hand to offer a recommendation suited to your taste. The food is also pretty darn good. It's certainly not Wetherspoons prices, but you can expect really decent homecooked grub ranging from your usual burgers right up to fantastic salads, baked camembert and a plentiful choice of sides (I can recommend the beer battered onion rings). On our last visit we chose the "Match day special," which was a pie and a pint (served in a box) for £6.95. The serving of pie would have sated the most ferocious of hungers and was perfect for those afternoons when you're really feeling the night before. As you can probably guess, they really care about the quality of their ales in this pub. I've never had a bad pint and fell head over heels with the "Green Arrow" ale on our last visit. A pint ranges from around £3.20 right up to nearly £10 for a bottle of the really strong/specialist stuff, but the prices are clearly advertised in their menu and above the bar on the "beer boards". The decor is lovely and comfy with overstuffed sofas, wooden chairs and tables and an "old man" traditional pub vibe. It's the kind of place where you might intend to go for one and end up being seduced into trying most of the beer menu on a session. This has certainly happened to me on a number of occasions. So, in summary, just go. Grab some close friends, peruse the menu and enjoy. read more

The Devonshire Cat is one of the best places in Sheffield for beer selection. The many, many beers that you will find on the Beer Menu, may not be cheap compared to your average pub, but you won't find them in your average pub and they are well worth the little extra money. The staff are friendly are know their stuff and will recommend something to your taste even if you don't really know what to ask for. The food is also a bit on the pricey side but again, is well worth the money and will taste as good as anything you'd find in other gastro pubs in Sheffield. read more

I've spent so many hours in this pub since moving to Sheffield... Quiet dates with my partner, rowdy family meet ups and pre festival drinks with friends. I enjoy spending time here; when I can actually sit down. I often find myself in their and wishing I could move on as it is just too busy and even standing in a corner you find yourself in someones way. Focusing on when i'ts quiet specifically, I find the Dev Cat a great place to be. There's a sense of privacy, every now and again there's the chance to try new beers from the Abbeydale Brewery and they even have quizzes! Personally I'd recommend paying them a visit in the daytime when it's quieter. It just feels a little more special as you'll have a chance to chat to the bar staff and find out more about the specialist ales and ciders they stock. read more

This pub was independently recommended to me by two people, so I thought I'd have to visit during a 2 week sabbatical in Sheffield. It's underneath a modern block of flats and nestled in the middle of young professional/student heaven, just next to the main street of bars and restaurants in Sheffield city centre. It specialises in beer and real ale, with hundreds to chose from in glasses of all shapes and sizes to keep you entertained. The interior is confused, not really going for full on old style pub or modern pub or bar. Unfortunately this is now a trendy wine bar. Since the refurbishment the range of beers has been reduced considerably and the 'cocktails' are now much more heavily pushed. Which means that getting served takes about 20 minutes since the staff are all busy twirling and twisting and shaking. Speaking of which, the staff now seem to be hired on the basis of looking hipster, not on knowing anything about beer. A once brilliant pub, ruined. read more

Definitely one of the best pubs in the city! They have a wide range of bottled and draught beer from around the world. Whenever I have visited the pub the staff have been friendly and full of advice when trying to decide which beer to sample - even giving you a little taste of beers before you buy. The only complaint would be that the decor could do with a bit of an update, but that is no biggy really! read more

Great pub! Has the best selection of real ales in the city centre. The clientele are a mix here. There's definetly an upmarket crowd here and that's definetly a plus! It's a mixture of professionals, students and older real ale fans. You also get quite a few rockers in here as Corporation is nearby! pretty diverse. It can get really busy at times, especially on weekends and on events such as freshers week. It can be quite hard to get served at times, but you'll never be waiting for long. It really depends what day you go. If you're used to incredibly cheap Wetherspoons and chain pub prices then you'll be shocked when you come in here, but the prices are worth it if you want to try exellent quality foreign and local beer all in the original glasses. The expensive beers that are over the £3 mark are usually the 'unusual and exotic' foreign beers, so saying that I think that the prices are pretty reasonable. The pub itself is pretty average. You get the feeling when you enter that this place is confused on whether it's an old fashioned pub or a modern upmarket yuppie bar. Looking at this place from the outside it's easy to mistake it for another average pub. The place looks really bland boring and the atmosphere also feels a little souless at times even when the place is packed. It all depends on who you bring whether you enjoy it in here or not. I never found the staff to be rude. They're ok, but definetly not the friendliest. read more

Undoubtedly the best selection of beers in Sheffield, with the likes of Kwak available with the correct glass and holder (£10 deposit required). There can certainly be no complaint about the selection of beverages on offer here. I do, however, have a few suggestions: 1. The owners should make more effort to appeal to the younger crowd. Despite the relatively spacious and modern feel of the place, under 25s in particular often feel uneasy in here. Very early closing hours (I've seen the bar closed at 10.30pm before!) do nothing to improve this situation. 2. Better lighting and general furnishing. Dimming the lights a little and introducing an area with some leather sofas and coffee tables would make it feel a lot nicer! 3. Encourage the staff to smile once in a while! It's not a funeral parlour! 4. The beers are not widely available and one expects to pay a premium, but turning the pricing down just a little would get a lot more traffic through the doors. Don't be put off, though, the Devo Cat is still better than 90% of places in the UK! read more

The Dev Cat is known by Sheffield drinkers as having the best range of beers in the City Centre. Not only does this extend to 'beers of the world', but lifestyle drinks too: you could have a Cruzcampo rather than just a Carling or a Peroni but why stop there? This place sells organic lager! (known to my friends to reduce hangovers by 50%). Whether you're drinking good or bad, exotic or local, the choice is phenomenal The bar itself is pretty ordinary and depends on its customers to create the atmosphere (I see its been noted as having a 'Travel Lodge' vibe and yeah, that's a good observation). As The Dev Cat placed in the heart of the student village, the crowd is young and chatty with a smattering of older ale fans, who appreciate frequently-changing guest ales and a pub that brews its own beer. The Cat is also round the corner from The Corporation, Sheffield's Rock & Metal club, so there's an entertaining mix of dress codes on the weekend. read more

The Devonshire Cat was a delightful little pub that was stumbled upon before Brighton and Hove Albion took on Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsbrough. Tucked away off of a man street, it meant it was quite quiet which was nice for a pre-game pint. I would go as far as to say that there were hundreds of beers on sale, with lots of real ale for the beardies on tap, continental lagers and a plethora of bottled stuff available. The pub also had on offer that wonderful substance snuff, which is an added bonus as in the day and age of cigarettes and roll ups, people seem to have forgotten what joy can be gotten from shoving a load of tobacco up your nose and the resultant sneezing session for the next 24 hours. The beer was reasonably priced, and there looked to be a decent selection of food on offer, although this was a little more expensive, especially by northern standards read more

Great pub just round the corner from The Corporation club. It's big and roomy with plenty of seats. There is a great selection of ales and bottled beers. The food is really good too-I really enjoyed my steak and ale pie and sticky toffee pudding! Staff are really friendly. Happy to head back!:) read more

The Devvy Cat (as it's often referred to) is a good boozer with a class above many others in Sheffield. It has hundreds of ales, ciders, lagers and wines to choose from (from all over the world) and has it's own wine and beer menus. The prices are good. It is quite a big pub with a large seating plan but still gets very crowded at weekends. It's very student friendly and full of professionals rather than your usual traditional pub punters. It's defo worth calling in on a pub crawl. read more

One of the best pubs in Yorkshire, in my view. It's owned by the Abbeydale brewery, which keeps three Abbeydale beers on regularly, with guest beers and ciders galore. Super laid back atmosphere, with plenty of couches, comfy seating, good food and zero pretension. Great music, too. A real session pub in the heart of the city. read more

The only positive thing about this pub is the wide selection of alcohol. The place is soulless, the queues are often very long and the staff are unattentive and unfriendly. The place is usually full of a 30+ crowd and has a very dull, sterile atmosphere. This is one pub that I really do not understand the interest in. I know a lot of people who like it but I cannot see anything good about it. I have never eaten there mind. read more

Although the place has a good range of well kept beers, eg Thornbridge, I didn't gell with it. I don't think it was the students, but at 5.30 on a Saturday, it was full of younger noisier types, and I didn't feel at home. Too much brass and glass, not my idea of a pub really. This is a well know real ale pub. There are so many different flavours, The bar staff are very helpful and will help you work out which beer you might like. I don't like real ale so they let me try a strawberry flavoured one, which turned out to be delicious! Nice atmosphere and good mix of clientele. read more

An excellent place. There's a really thick bound document on every table that I thought was the menu at first, but no, it's a list of one of the most extensive beer ranges I've seen. There are numerous excellent-sounding examples of every kind of beer you could think of. I'm into wheat beers, which I suppose are a bit of an acquired taste, so many pubs don't bother offering them. This pub however, has at least three to my knowledge, maybe even more (It wouldn't surprise me!). There's even curious varieties of beer such as one brewed with chocolate! My only slight regret is that I ordered a coffee before I discovered this amazingly exhaustive range of other drinks. The coffee by the way, comes with a biscuit (in my case, a nice caramelised one) which is always a nice touch. The cappuccino I had wasn't the absolute best, but this is a pub, and that's, understandably, not their focus or what most people come here for, plus the positives outweigh that in spades. read more
