So we went with the new kids on the Culver City downtown block, TurboTax-Intuit. Suffice to say from the moment we walked into this office, we were impressed with the environment, and were greeted instanenously by both the security guard as well as the staff. The tax agent named Raymond was up to bat, (picture) and our experience with him was top tier. For those of you in the West LA and or Culver City area I'd highly recommend this new location, and ask for Raymond. He was great, and is a credit to the TurboTax-Intuit brand.

Good tax prep services! Good process! Very fair pricing!…read more Did my income taxes with Cynthia Fuentes at Pronto Income Tax for the better part of a decade while we had complicated personal taxes. It was always a seamless process, done entirely by secure web upload and Zoom (I've never even been to their office in person!). The process was so smooth that I continued to use them even after moving out of California, and only stopped using Cynthia's services because I need a local tax expert who can deal with the local tax insanity in my new town in a different state. A lot of times we had issues with either the IRS or the state of California contesting our returns for one reason or another. Cynthia always advised us how to respond and held our hand during the process, and when possible she even called the IRS herself to have our refunds released. Pricing is very fair considering you get your taxes done by an actual IRS Enrolled Agent (not some made-up "Tax Advisor" who has no training or expertise in tax law, which is what you get at the big national chains).

I had a very bad experience with my previous CPA that I started looking for a new CPA to work with. I went to many firms and spoke with them in person before making my decision to start working with James Cha CPA. It has been a little over a year and is very satisfied with the company. What I noticed was that James responded to the positive reviews as well as the few negative ones. As a business owner myself, this tells me that James takes pride in his work and cares about his reputation. This was a good sign! During my initial consultation with him, I asked if he's encountered similar scenarios to my case and he said that he did and while he couldn't make definite promises, he had favorable results in the past. So I hired him to help out with my tax case. My tax case was a real mess spanning over 15 years and dealt with international tax laws with major $$$ implications. The whole ordeal took over a year to resolve but in the end James and his firm knocked my case out of the park! James knows his craft and with years of experience he was able to help me maneuver through the intricacies of international tax laws and tax resolution strategies. It would be an understatement to say that James saved my business and our livelihood! And for that I will forever be grateful.

I highly advise avoiding this CPA. I had a very costly, negative experience…read more Due to a medical issue I had multiple years of back taxes to file, so I was in a hurry to get them in. I called Lawrence based on the positive yelp reviews, explained the situation, my income sources and the constraints to get them filed quickly to avoid issues. When I spoke on the phone before meeting in person, he quoted me a very competitive rate but left it open because he had to look at my actual filing (understandable). Once I arrived onsite, he presented a retainer with a much higher price per year that included a large variable range of potential cost per year. (Ex. Filing cost will equal $x - $2.5x per year depending on the work completed.) Because I had no other options, (admittedly this was my fault) I signed the retainer under the assurance that the "Should be easy to file". The process for filing and communicating information was via a series of back and forth emails that was time consuming and unorganized. Other tax preparers I have used sent organizers, not to mention the securing transfer of the files through a website, etc. to not have them exposed as attachments in email. The drawn-out process resulted in action being taken and when I reached out to Lawrence for help, he said he would be happy to call them on my behalf. This sounded like the best course of action because he claimed to have inner working knowledge of the IRS from experience. The result of his calls however came to a very unfavorable resolution because according to him the agent "wouldn't budge". I took his word on this, however after a couple months, out of desperation, I decided to call them myself to attempt to get a better resolution. I was able to quickly get a much better resolution with very little effort. This could just be chalked up to chance of me getting a nicer agent, however the two issues I have were 1) he discouraged me from trying to call them myself and 2) (Something he didn't communicate prior to calling them) he billed me much more for this additional time. After a three of the years were completed, I went to pick them up at his office. He presented me with an un-itemized bill. The bill was significantly higher than I had anticipated. He charged me the highest end of the range for each of the years (2.5x what I expected per year). When I asked him politely to explain why the bill was so high, he reacted very emotionally and said "You want me to take them back I will!" (Knowing they needed to be mailed off immediately). I explained that I wasn't implying the charges were wrong, I was just seeking an explanation for the charges. Because I was in a bind I decided to just pay it. I only had one more year to complete and then I could find a different CPA. The final year was again a long unorganized process and halfway through he sent me an email saying that he had identified something that involve more time to complete the filing and as a result the price would be 2x the original quoted cost (which was already high). This time I said I would not pay the additional amount because the costs kept changing, I just wanted him to get them completed quickly and could do an amended return later. His email response to this was again unprofessional but this time he decided to add a personal attack by saying "I did not total my car nor get behind on my tax filings."... (I"m not sure what the goal with this was, shame me into paying more? I came to him seeking help because I had gotten into a bind.) Needless to say, I decided to find a new cpa to complete the remaining year. I found a new CPA who handled the final year quickly, efficiently and for less than a 1/4th what Lawrence was attempting to charge me. I typically don't write negative reviews but felt compelled to in this case to warn people in my situation. I went based of the existing positive reviews and regret my decision.

I had a terrible experience with Byran Blatt Who is a CPA at SCHALLER & BLATT, INC in Sherman Oaks California and would not recommend his services to anyone. Despite paying him over $1100.00, he failed to deliver on his promises and refused to respond to my messages. For four long months, he kept telling me he would contact the IRS to get an update on my documents, but he never followed through. He never bothered to return my calls, emails and he rarely responded to my text messages. Whenever I tried to reach him, he always had some excuse or the other, claiming he was ill or attending a party to name a few. This kind of behavior is unacceptable for someone who claims to be a professional. If he had been upfront with me and said he was too busy to take on my case, I could have found someone else who would have been able to help me. Instead, he wasted my time and money, leaving me in a bind. I would advise anyone looking for an accountant to steer clear of SCHALLER & BLATT, INC in Sherman Oaks California. Save yourself the headache and look for another firm that is reliable and professional.

I had some complicated tax issues and was hoping to get some clarity so I met with her and gave her my letters and tax forms. She gave me an OUTRAGEOUS quote to begin and I told her I wouldn't be able to pay the full amount up front so she agreed that she would hold my documents until I saved up money to get started. We filed for Power of Attorney so she could dive deeper, in the meantime. I called her a couple months later to let her know I was ready to begin but had to leave a message. Note that every time I called her I had to leave a message. No one answers the phone, EVER. I called back several times after that and left many messages. Never ONCE did I receive a call back. Once I received a letter saying my Power of Attorney was denied (that was on me because I was traveling and didn't return the response letter for approval before the deadline). I called to talk to her about that and left another message. Again, I received no call back. Many months after our first and only meeting, I called so I could pick up my files. I actually thought she might have gone out of business due to no response. I don't live in her area but on this particular day I was nearby so I decided to drop by and speak to someone in person. When I walked in she was on the phone so I stood by the door out of respect for privacy. She didn't acknowledge me for a few minutes while she continued speaking of business matters to someone on the phone. Eventually she held the phone in the air and YELLED, in a tone of annoyance, from her back office where I could halfway see her at her desk "I'm on the phone, what do you need?" I told her I left her a message earlier in the day and wanted to pick up my files. She proceeded to yell at me that she was on a call and couldn't help me so I had to come back later. I asked when was a good time and she told me 15 minutes so I said "I don't live nearby so I'd like to wait, if that's ok". She was clearly frustrated and got back on the phone. I heard her conversation as she told the person on the phone that I was there and it sounded like the person on the phone told her to go ahead and help me and she said "Sure, ok, I'll call you back". She got off the phone and was SO RUDE with an accusatory tone. I started to feel bad for being there. She said she got my message earlier and that she looked for my files but she didn't have them. She went on to say that I picked them up from her because I couldn't pay for her services. My mouth dropped because that was NOT AT ALL WHAT HAPPENED! I reminded her I've only met with her once. She said she's looked for my files before when I called in the past and was never able to find them (yet she NEVER ONCE CALLED to let me know that). I was shocked. Mind you, she was yelling at me and pacing around her office looking around. I told her I really hope my files are there somewhere and she finally asked me to give her a couple more days to look for them since her assistant wasn't there and she might know where they were. I left wondering what my legal rights were if she lost all my files. Holly, her assistant, FINALLY called me a couple days later saying she had my files and they were ready for pick up. Never once did I hear from Cindy. DO NOT TRUST HER WITH YOUR TAXES. She's rude, outrageously expensive, and unorganized. After doing my research on her I found she's only a CFP, not a CPA. A CFP specializes in personal financial planning, including investments, retirement, and estate strategies. A CPA, on the other hand, focuses on tax planning, accounting and business financial management. Maybe she was just out of her league with my challenging taxes and couldn't handle it? Too embarrassed to let me know so she never called me back? Lost my files and hoped I would just forget and wouldn't come back for them? On top of that, yelling at me, as if I was in the wrong, when I only wanted to get my files back! Whatever the reason, she's very unprofessional on all levels. I DO NOT RECOMMEND.
