This is my favorite place to get waxed. If you are looking for a quick in and out, look somewhere else. Doreen greets you at the door with a huge smile and questions about your day. I came here because Grace's recommended it. But, it's the worst customer service and skill. The place is also a bit shady, too, but I can deal with a hole in the wall if the skill is good. I go in and ask to have my eyebrows done like a certain celebrity. I even tell her I can get the picture from my car. The lady says she doesn't want to look at it and she will just do what she thinks is good. I think if she really was that good, she could look at the picture and explain to me why she couldn't do it... in the end.... She took off too much hair and the eyebrows also have no shape whatsoever. Just one round half arch. sigh. If I can take a picture of my brows and post them, I will... maybe I am just too picky. $15 is also the going price. I have been going to Doreen for brow shaping for almost two years now, and I wouldn't consider going to anyone else. She is meticulous, yet very efficient (a brow & lip wax only takes 10 minutes or less) so it's possible to fit appointments in during your lunch. The prices? Very reasonable (only $15 for brow.) The salon itself has a comfortable Shabby Chic feel to it with overstuffed couches and soothing music; even the waiting area is pleasant. The only reason why I had enough nerve to get a Brazilian in the first place was because I had 40 shots of Crown Royal pumping through my veins. It was the slowest, painful experience of my life and the girl who did it was clearly an amateur. I left the place convinced that my crotch was permanently bruised and that I would never let anyone violate me in the way that she did as long as I lived.. Fast forward a few years and a friend of mine is raving about her awesome Brazilian lady who is a self proclaimed "wax queen." Since some of the emotional scarring from the first experience had passed, and I was in need of a gold plated poon, I decided to give the Face Place a try. Doreen was hilarious and engaged in interesting conversation so much that I hardly felt it when she ripped off my muff within seconds. She asked if i wanted a "nacho chip" for a landing strip, she told me to get down doggy style so that she could thoroughly remove it all, and within seconds I was out the door with no bruising or trauma. Aside from waxing, The Face Place offers other services like facials and massage at reasonable prices. It's located in a quaint little house that is warm and inviting. Nice customer service - with a big glass of wine to wait, I was in the mood to get my skin rubbed. Notes: a) It looks like it's part of the apartment buildings on the corner, look for the sign sitting on the sidewalk. b) Make appointments in advance for facials, especially if you want to have them simultaneously with a friend. c) The woman I had was GENIUS at extractions. Aren't facials supposed to be relaxing? I used to go to Dorene for my brows waxed and a random facial. When I went there I had very bad acne and blackheads. Her extractions were extremely painful and I never got facials again because the extractions made it a very unpleasant experience. Little did I know that extractions shouldn't be that painful until I had another facial elsewhere. Her waxing is overpriced, and every time I left I looked permanently surprised regardless of how I try to tell her. I wanted to like the place because it is cute! read more

I had a sort of odd experience here: the facial I had from Signe was FANTASTIC, but it was among the more distracting and not restful spas I've ever been to. The facial room is warm and welcoming ... until you turn around and realize you're in the spa's KITCHEN. There's no door on the room, just a curtain, so you can hear everything (and I do mean everything) going on in the lobby, telephone, and bathroom right outside the room. In short, go see Signe if you need a fantastic facial, but don't expect to get much rest and relaxation in the spa! read more

I loved it. Got a facial. I've always had bad experiences with facials. This was amazing. Felt fantastic. Everything about it was great. It was small, quiet, hassle free. It's a little hard to find because it's in an apartment building (ground floor) and there's a sign but somehow I got confused. I love the Face Place. I treat my acne prone skin to a facial every year for my birthday. I had been using every product under the sun, suggested by multiple estheticians. Doreen finally got it right. She gave me samples of 2, only 2 products, and suggested I try them for 2 weeks. Went back the day before my wedding to get, well, groomed. I was dropped off by a friend who sat with me in the car for 20 minutes before while I chased a couple tylenol with some white wine before heading into my doom. This time was awesome- totally doable! Could have been because I was highly under the influence at that point, and ended up just laughing at Doreen's jokes, talking about marriage and life, and just walking on air at that point. I've been going to The Face Place sporadically for a few years now...sporadically because I moved to LA for a year and was not able to go there for regular waxings obviously. However, I have recently moved back to Portland and I'm thrilled to go back to Signe and Doreen. I really don't have a preference as to who does my waxing. I've had both and both are aces! They distract you as best they can from the near painless procedure. Signe could not be sweeter!! Doreen can be a little rough around the edges at times but that is just her personality and so you can take it or leave it I suppose. I kind of enjoy her no-nonsense attitude. That being said, she always has been very friendly to me...so perhaps people who have experienced bad customer service from her just caught her on a bad day. We all have them! On one of the worst days of that snow storm last December, she stayed open and squeezed me in at the last minute!! I was desperate because I was on my way to Mexico! I could not thank her enough. Signe also gave me an awesome spray tan! They were my heroes that day! There is a reason why they call Doreen "The Wax Queen of Portland". I can't say enough about this place. I've been seeing Doreen for over three years now - and I would never go anywhere else. Ever. I know many other women who feel exactly the same way, too. :) My skin is very fair and extremely sensitive - it doesn't take much to make it freak out. Doreen is always very, very careful. I've been trusting Dorene to keep me beautiful for almost a decade and I wouldn't dream of going to anyone else. My brows and eyelashes are white blond and her tint jobs are out of this world. I have tried other spas that offer brow and eyelash tinting in the past, and nothing compares with Dorene. She makes me look naturally gorgeous and groomed without looking overdone or like a drag queen, which has happened in the past. Not a good look, trust me. In addition to my lashes and brows, Dorene does an amazing brazillian bikini wax. She's quick, incredibly thorough, and has a way of putting you at ease so you barely realize what you're having done. If I could detract stars I would take away -1000000. I am 7-1/2 months pregnant, so my hormones are a bit more touchy than normal, but regardless, bad service is just bad service. I called yesterday and left a message to request an appt. for an eyebrow waxing. I never heard back from anyone so I decided this morning since I would be passing by, I would take advantage of the "WALK IN WELCOME" policy that was listed on the website. I waited a few minutes before the woman, who apparently was the owner, emerged from upstairs with a client. She asked me what I wanted so I said, "Your website said you accept walkins, I was wondering if I could get an eyebrow waxing done." She huffed and mumbled something about walkins as though it wasn't clearly stated on the website and then bitched at me, "Well I dont have any time for you today" even though there was no one even in the waiting area. Since she was making such a big deal about the walk-in I told her that I had called yesterday to try to make an appt but had never heard back to which she asked my name and then proceeded to yell at me, " I DID call you!!! Maybe YOUR PHONE didnt get it but I called, Im the OWNER why would I LIE?!!!" I was so disgusted by the total lack of respect this woman who should be service oriented, its her BUSINESS, was giving me. I told her, well I didnt get anything and I certainly wouldn't just walk in if you had actually called me. She then proceeded to continue berating me as I made my way to the door and slammed it behind me. I will NEVER EVER consider going to this place, and I already sent messages to all of my girlfriends about what happened so they will not use this establishment either. What a shame. You would think with such a down economy service with a smile would be a must. All the woman had to do was be polite and I would have just scheduled an appt for a better time. Dorene is fantastic. I started going to Dorene in 2000 when she was the esthetician at Aphrodite. She's been providing me with a monthly Brazilian wax ever since. She's fast, knows her stuff and makes you feel completely comfortable. While a Brazilian wax is never going to be the relaxing spa services some might be, Dorene is the best I've experienced. I also have seen Dorene for facials. So far, she is the best facial I've had in town. She's incredibly thorough, my complexion glowed for days afterward and I fell asleep while she was doing it. I've been going to the Face Place for almost 5 years now for a reason! Dorene is the owner and I usually see her for both waxing and facials. Dorene is constantly educating herself and her staff on the latest and greatest products and skin care technology available. She genuinly cares about the health of your skin and has a really soothng touch. The spa is located in the Pearl but dont expect Pearl District pricing. Her prices are very reasonable, especially for what you get . They currently have a $50 mini-facial special but there's really nothing "mini" about it. It feels like a full facial to me! I love the face place, Doreen is a sweetheart and great at what she does. I came here to leave stellar review and saw the one below and I'm not sure if that person had a freak one time experience there, or just has a bad attitude or what, but I've seen Doreen multiple times and have several friends that do as well and she is always great. Being in the industry I know what it's like to not have a receptionist and have people expect you to have openings that day, or have gotten your call at 9pm the night before for your appointment tomorrow. sometimes it's just not possible to get to all the messages and deal with appointments and walkins. Doreen at the Face Place is the BEST Brazilian waxer in Portland. She provides a meticulously clean, warm environment, that has kept me coming back for ten years (including through two pregnancies!). Doreen is efficient, professional, and amazing at what she does. My Brazilian wax lasts for four months and has become so scarce, I have to let it grow out for another month before it's long enough to be waxed again. It's awesome! I would never recommend Doreen or The Face Place to anyone, even my worst enemy. She is rude, crass, and does not know how to wax. Worse than all of that, her place is dirty and unwelcoming. I've been waxing forever. I was looking for someone new and was recommended Doreen. I walked into her messy little dirty place fifteen minutes early. She acted like I was late and she'd been waiting for me, then she didn't even welcome me or introduce herself. We walked upstairs and she just stood there waiting for me to undress, making me feel completely awkward. Then she started waxing my legs and had no idea what she was doing. Anyways, then she barked at me that my hair was not long enough and questioned the fact that I had even ever been waxed before- lady, I've been waxing longer than you!
