Unfortunately I only have 3 words. Don't Do It! But since I have to write a more detailed review, here we go. This is a park district course. It is great for young children starting off playing golf and that is exactly what you'll find practicing around almost every hole (while you are playing.) Everyone (staff) is friendly but the fairways (if you can find them, greens (dead grass patches and dirt bumps all over) and I guess what they call sand bunkers (that look like an unkept flower garden) haven't been manicured in years. Evanston Wilmette Golf Course, the former Peter Jans Golf Course has re-opened with a lot of community support on the East Side of Evanston and WIlmette. Just played there yesterday and saw some real progress towards running a great community golf course. You can't beat this place for price and convenience, and it is really pretty as well. It's a short course, with golf carts available, so you can get in Nine Holes in an hour or so, but it has 18 holes and is pretty tricky at times, being narrow, and with some tricky barriers, including the El Tracks, the Metra Tracks, and a major Canal, the North Shore Channel running right through the middle. This is a real community golf course, good for all ages and all levels of golfer. Great place to learn, or to sharpen up your game. read more

Held a tailgate at Canal Shores before a NU football game. The location couldn't have been better, and they were so very helpful in making sure we had all the right contacts to host an incredible event. I can't recommend the space enough for a tented event - we had almost 400 people with room to spare! Everything had a relaxed, family feel to it, and we absolutely loved it. read more

This course has had major improvements in the last few years. It is still a collection of long par 3s, mid par 3s and short 4s. Currently the greens are in great condition, as are the fairways and tee boxes. Some of the oldschool hazards (very long rough in places) appear, and will swallow you up. This is a short, narrow course with small greens, a great old course that has been brought back to life. There are gas, pull carts and rental clubs. Above the office is the legion hall which has a very simple bar where beers are cheap. The golf fee is very reasonable. While reading a book on the history of Illinois golf, I believe this course is a mix of the original Evanston and North Shore country club courses. The original Evanston CC was on the grounds of Ryan field, North Shore was situated around Lincoln and Ridge. Both of those clubs began around 1897, both moved away around 1916. Evanston golf course formed in 1917, pretty much centered between those two locations. I met a 95yr old golfer recently who began playing Jans in 1951. He said the layout is the same, and the condition in 2015 is the best he ever seen. read more

Great rate for a small/short course. Very tight fairways. Bring extra golf balls if you don't hit it straight consistently. Great course to practice your Iron game. I never hit drive, I pretend its my second shot on the longer holes. *My only gripe with this course, there isn't enough signage on the course. We were new and got lost pretty often. Luckily the group behind us was very helpful. read more

City golf at its most unique. You can walk from el stop to "pro shop" in three minutes.

This course is under new supervision and in short time it will become a gem in the area.

They have Annual Passes here for $400. Do the math- it's a pretty good deal if you can get out alot. It's a pretty, fun course, not long at 3,900 yds. Bring extra balls - you hit over the canal. Twice! read more

Without a doubt the worst golf experience I've ever had to pay for. To be fair, I haven't been here since last year so not sure if any of this might have changed. The fairways were essentially crab grass which can be overlooked but three of the holes didn't have a green. They just put a hole in the middle of the fairway so you have to put through the crab grass. If that wasn't enough, the last hole was being used as a parking lot for what appeared to be a football game. There was no mention of any of this from the starter so when we went back to speak with the manager, we were very rudely told that we already played through the course so there would be no refund. I get that you get what you pay for but this was just ridiculous. Had I known about any of this, I would have paid to not go to this course. read more

Don't be fooled by all these positive reviews. This is the oddest course I have ever played on. You will have to cross a road about 4 or 5 times and the signage is terrible. The course is in the middle of a neighborhood and people will walk right through the fairways. Also, there are no carts available. The best part of the course was the value; it was cheap. This would be a good course for a new golfer, but not for someone that enjoys the game. read more

This course looks flat out nasty.. The "green" looks like my back yard. We booked a tee time showed up and just left, even the sad pits looked like a sand box in a playground. Completely disappointed in the overall appearance of the course. Would NOT return. read more

Course name changed to Canal Shores to reflect local identification and positive changes to the course. It's a gem and convenient to get to from Chicago and North Shore communities. The course plays harder than its short distance would suggest and requires good iron and wood shots to the greens. Has several long par 3's and a few par 4's where a driver would be the club of choice. Good value and a great venue. Can be played in less than 3 hours. read more

Fun, quirky course - not a surprise that Bill Murray worked here. Definitely a good deal! Three suggestions to the course: 1) at the old pro shop, explain where the new pro shop location is ---- not everyone knows where the VFW hall is; 2) more signage on the course ---- it's fun to ramble through neighborhoods but so easy to get lost crossing streets, etc. ; 3) the smell! --- no, the course can't do anything about it but the canal smell was really bad the day I was there. read more
