The place is updated, clean, and much nicer overall than the Best Western, which hasn't had the same care. The real highlight, though, is the staff. Jade and Tasha are absolutely wonderful. I managed to lock myself out late at night, and Tasha came to the rescue and had my door opened in just five minutes. Outstanding hospitality, a superior location, and a clean, comfortable stay. I was notified there would be construction from 9 to 5 which wasn't a problem for me as I was arriving after 5 and leaving before 9. What was a problem was that the parking lot was roped off so you had to park on the outer edges rather than in front of the room, I was in 18. This was a bit of an issue for me as one of the reasons I booked was that just coming off of a knee replacement I wanted a room that I could park directly in front of. If they had disclosed this, I would have gone somewhere else. Secondly, the pillow situation was pretty horrible, old feather pillows which flattened down to nothingness, no support at all. The heating unit was one of those old wall units with a really loud fan, so couldn't keep that on. Hot and cold water difficult to get in shower, so either scald or lukewarm. there was no space to put items above sink on tiny shelf. I would not stay there again.

I'm giving these folks five stars because they're experts at milking cows. And they really know…read morewho the cows are. I wanted to make a reservation with them and all of the online sites had the rate at about $93/night. When I called though they told me the rate was $97/night. So I figured I wait until it was closer to the time I was going to travel. As I waited the rate kept going up and up and up, to the point where it was about $110/night. And then I figured, the hell with them I'll find another place. Yreka is about 35 to 40 miles from Ashland, Oregon and I found a hotel, at least equally as good for the same night in Ashland for at least $20 less (more if you include the lack of taxes) and only $3 more than the price they first quoted. And Ashland is a nicer town with more amenities than Yreka. In addition, gasoline is cheaper in Ashland (or nearby) if you need to fill up (I did). I was traveling well over 300 miles that day and the extra 40 to 45 minutes from Ashland versus Yreka wasn't much of a big deal. But particularly because when I called them they were insistent on charging me more than the online rate I stayed in an equally nice place and in a nicer town. So these folks can continue to milk the ignorant cows without really knowing who their competition is. I might have dropped off some sand so they can pound on it, but I was passing through and really didn't want to stop. Mooo.

Neglected, dirty, and under chaotic construction -- an absolute ripoff at $250/night…read moreDo not stay here until this property gets its act together. My wife, step-son, and I stayed here last Friday and it was a complete and utter disappointment from the moment we arrived. We were placed in a separate building from the main hotel -- a building that was actively under construction, and not organized, professional construction. It looked like the owner hired a bunch of kids to do the work. Tools scattered around, drop cloths in the hallways, construction equipment and garbage strewn throughout the building, and a dumpster partially blocking the entrance that we had to walk around just to get to our room. Nobody warned us about any of this at booking or check-in. The neglect extended to the grounds. The small grassy play area had overflowing garbage cans and litter all over the ground, and a homeless person was lying in it. Not exactly the family-friendly environment you expect from a Best Western. The room itself clearly hadn't been properly cleaned. A candy bar wrapper under the bed. Food crumbs on the couch. Black dirt or mold pressed into the shower grout. Insects in the bedroom. Even the toilet paper roll was nearly spent -- housekeeping apparently couldn't be bothered to replace it. For roughly $250 a night, this is inexcusable. We paid full price for a dirty room in a neglected property that was, in effect, a construction site. I felt genuinely ripped off. If management insists on renting rooms mid-renovation, they should discount them heavily and disclose the conditions upfront -- and at minimum, the rooms should be clean. Save your money and stay elsewhere until the construction is done and management starts caring again.

So let me take another tack and make sure that this is the place for you. First off, Mountain Meadow Resort isn't for everyone. If you can't be unplugged and off the grid, this place isn't for you. Seriously, there is no wi-fi, your smartphones are only useful as cameras because there is no cell signal, and the generator that provides electricity only runs from 6:30am to 11pm. Bookings typically go from Saturday to Saturday so if the prospect of not being able to check your texts, voicemail, e-mail and social media for a week gives you the heebee jeebees, then this place is not for you. Second, this place is remote. The resort is most definitely in the WILDerness. In the four years that I've gone I've come across black bears and been within spitting distance of a rattle snake, rattle going off, coiling and ready to strike. The nearest medical facility is 2 hours away by car. And that's not counting the fact that you could be half a dozen miles into a hike away from the resort and your parked car when you get injured. If that seems a bit too off the beaten track for you, then this place is not for you. ...Still reading? Then you must be adequately intrigued as to why people go and keep coming back to this wonderful place. And if the you're not scared off then you will likely fall in love with this place as I have. Read on if you want my attempt to add information you might be hoping to gleam from reading these reviews. This is a family run camp. Decades ago a group of families bought the place and ran it together. Their children now run the resort and while you're there you'll likely see the next generation starting to help out as well. Staff all have a direct connection to the resort via family, being visitors in years past themselves when they were younger, or being recruited by one of the first two categories. What that means is that your initial visit feels like you're an interloper at a family reunion, but on repeated trips you begin to feel that you too are part of the family, because you truly are. That sentiment permeates through and is felt not just by my wife and me but by my kids as well. I would love it if my kids worked here when they're older and if I could spend extended time helping out after I retire, whenever that is. Days can be spent on hikes, strenuous or relaxing. Obviously the former will reward you with amazing views. Unlike, say Yosemite, you could do your whole hike and never come across another group. If you do, it certainly will only be a handful. There are lakes to swim in and vistas to take in. The resort is positioned so that you can make a day hike where others will often have to backpack in and out. Sometimes you'll be tempted to backpack yourself and maybe stay over a night or two but what always draws me back is the food - homemade and delicious. Dinners are amazing. Lastly, the kids love it because of the independence and being outdoors. The "kids dinner" before the "adult one" is as much a highlight for the parents as it is the kids. More importantly my tech savvy kids being raised in the heart of Silicon Valley have no qualms with Mountain Meadow being a "screen free" place. And that alone makes our annual trip worth it.

Pleasant stay | Clean…read more We booked the same day we needed a hotel. Booking was easy, check in was quick. The room was first floor near the stairs and smoking area outside, but that was not a problem at all. The room was clean, towels and bedding were clean and crisp. I liked the welcome note on the bed. That was really sweet of them! The room had a microwave and small fridge w/freezer. There was a small office desk with coffee and ice. Tv, a/c, heater unit. Two things to note: 1. If you use 3 ports to charge at the clock on the nightstand, it uses too much power and one of the electronics needs to be unplugged. There are wall outlets, so you'd need to use those. 2. We didn't have a shower curtain when we arrived. I thought it was one of those modern places where it's just open, but we definitely needed a shower curtain. I felt so bad showering and getting everything wet in the bathroom. Housekeeping was kind to answer quickly and gave us towels to clean up. The fan in the bathroom isn't that effective. I suspect they'll have a mold problem in the future. The light switch to the bathroom is on the outside, which I thought was odd. Other than that, we had a pleasant one night stay. We would stay here again!
