This was truly one of the best dining experiences I had during my trip to London; this local pub is very shabby chic and has such a good vibe to it. We went in on a Saturday night for dinner and it wasn't too crowded. We started with the British cheese plate - the cheese portions were a bit small but all were exceptional. We tried the Stilton, tunworth and the cheddar. The caramelized onions were also delicious. I enjoyed a Hugo spritz and the lamb roast...it was such a beautiful plate. The saltiness, the different textures, the perfectly cooked meat - I truly will be thinking about that dish for days to come. My family tried the fish and chips, and the mushroom and leek pie (also YUM!). Service was relaxed but hospitable - again, I will be thinking of this place often and am sad we only went on my last night in town! read more

I was in London for work and vacation staying in an Airbnb just across the stress from this spot in Maida Vale. I just wandered in for a drink while waiting for my host and was very intrigued by the menu. The next day I went in for brunch. First of all, the coffee was delicious. I had an iced latte and it was so tasty. The first day I went in I had an avocado toast which had a very generous amount of avocado and feta. Also, the presentation was beautiful. I went back in my second day there and had the fried onion and meat sandwich. Wow. It was delicious and I ate the entire thing. It was really thinly sliced onions flash fried and marinated meat with a sweet BBQ flavor. I couldn't get enough! The atmosphere is delightful as well - very bright and airy with a cute, rustic decor. My only reason for not giving this place 5 stars was the service. I used to live in London so I understand service at restaurants isn't quite what it is in the states but this place was way too laid back. We had to flag down the waitress any time we needed something and twice we had to actually go to the bar to ask for the check. One of the days I had to get up and get menus for us and we had to go up to the bar and order while the waitress was talking to someone in the corner. She even walked by us several times to help others that had come in after us. When we did have to go to the bar there were no apologies for not getting to us sooner! read more

Went a few nights ago to sit outside and enjoy the lovely summer weather. The baked aubergine with lentils and pumpkin was quite good- good texture on the aubergine and it pairs off well with the pumpkin flavor. My husband's croquettes with mustard were bursts of flavor in each bite. The ciders on tap are good- not too mealy but a nice touch of sour to them. The desserts are TO DIE FOR. The carrot cake for me and banana walnut for him- the frosting is delectable. Service sucked- hence minus the star- but that;s to be expected in Europe. read more

The Elgin is what is what I would describe quite a plush pub, combined with a restaurant upstairs. In the heart of Maida Vale (quickly giving Notting Hill a run for it's money as a more exclusive location), the Elgin has a selction of committed guests, local and otherwise. The pub serves bar snacks, lunch and breakfast. Upstairs is the way to go if you require something heavier in terms of dinner. The staff are helpful, friendly and polite, which is something new (to be astounded by in this day and age....). The Elgin provides a friendly atmospehere. In the evenings, the music can be blasted at a volume that's a little too loud if you just want to have a natter and a drink with a close friend. Despite this, it's still one of my recommended venues. read more

Lovely gastro pub that has an antique style of decoration and a wide array of choices for any palate. I've been here for both brunch and dinner, and thoroughly enjoyed all of my visits. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and all food was served quickly and with a good presentation. For brunch I really would recommend the scrambled eggs as you do get a lot with it, and it kept me full for a good while! Their bread and orange juice are also very fresh make the price slightly more reasonable. However, my own issue with this place is that the pricing just seems to be a bit unreasonable, but maybe that's just me not being used to Maida Vale price! read more

Never again. Every time we come here the experience gets worse and worse, and after this evening I can say for certainty we will never come again. Save yourself the trouble and go to any of the many bars and pubs in the area: The Warrington, Priory Tavern, Wolfgang, Milk Beach, the list goes on and every single one of them is a better value, has better food, and has much better service. We've been here many times over the past year or so we have lived in the area. We've come for brunch, we have brought friends for breakfast, we have come for both cheeky and non-cheeky pints, and of course we've come just because. I'll start by saying the atmosphere is usually quite nice, which is probably why we have continued to come back despite very very poor experience. Overall, the food is decent at best but a bit overpriced. I've never had anything here that I couldn't make myself at home, but sometimes you just don't want to cook. Where this place lets itself down in in its slow, indifferent service and frequently rude staff. Take tonight for example. We come because we were out and wanted a pint and a snack. The place was as full as it usually is on a Saturday, plus there was a special event upstairs. One of the staff, a courteous and polite person, prepares us a table BUT then the couple right behind us takes it and acts like they didn't see us. We didn't want a confrontation so we just decided we'd sit somewhere else. Problem was there was nowhere else to go. Fine, we said. We eventually get another table, but after waiting quite a while for our food (we had long finished our drinks) we learned that the couple who took our table also apparently took our food and the kitchen was finally remaking it. Like, what the f---? Like yes the couple were entitled and clearly had no manners but it's up to the staff to keep track of order delivery AND address any mistakes in a timely fashion, not 45 minutes after we ordered. So then I go up to the bar because our food is still yet to be served and I figured if we ordered another drink I could gently remind them about it. Before I could even ask the server anything he tells me with all the condescension he could muster from his scrawny frame that the kitchen is now closed. Um, what? I was even holding the drink menu, and the patron right next to me had to point that out to him before he could understand it. Eventually I get to speak with someone else who was clearly a lot smarter and a lot better at customer service, and finally we get our food and... You guessed it, almost 15 minutes later, the second drinks we ordered. No apologies, no attempts to remedy our terrible dining experience. We left as soon as we could, and I counted the staff as we left. It was amazing to me that more than 5 people were working the bar for only the ground floor and yet still the service was that terrible. Glad we won't be back! read more

Meh, to be honest I once went here. Their burgers are horrid! They honestly smell and taste like dog food. The service was really bad. It took nearly an hour to get my food! Nice bar restaurant next to Maida Vale tube. Went on Sat night, loud music though we were a big group. Had a small plate and a main, probably better going for multiple small plates. The prawns were nice, but the description of chilli, garlic and lime didn't nearly have enough (any) chilli. The main of chorizo hash seemed about the same size as the small plate and was a bit disappointing. Very good selection of beers (mainly Camden Brewery on tap), good bottle selection too. Wines weren't bad either. Maybe a bit loud for a romantic dinner for two, but a good place to drink and nibble. read more

My husband and I ventured out here for brunch with our 15 month old daughter one weekend. We walked in to find all the tables full but were greeted by a waitress who assured us it would only be a few minutes wait. We were able to park our pram right next to our table but did feel like it was a bit crowded and in people's way. Our daughter ran around the pub for a bit and also cried :( but we didn't feel like anyone minded too much. There were high chairs but overall I wouldn't call this a super child friendly pub. The food was pretty good. I had a burger which was average and my husband ordered scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. He thought they were delicious. I was very impressed when I asked the waitress for a drink menu and she asked what I wanted. She told me they could basically make anything I want! I didn't get a drink that day but will be back to test that theory :) read more

The Elgin, located only a minute away from Maida Vale station, reopened in late 2012. I was once at the old Elgin and after I had ordered some food, they forgot to serve me. Now, I cannot imagine this could happen at the new Elgin. The new Elgin has quite an edgy interior. In general, I really like the new style. But I do not like the rusty metal table, sorry, that just does not work for me. Perhaps the place tries a bit too hard to look cool? Anyway, all in all it's definitely one of the better pubs in the area. Days after it reopened I went there for dinner. I ordered their burger and was happy with it. Not a contender for the best burger in London, but a decent effort. Another day I went there during afternoon for a coffee. And I must say, the coffee was surprisingly good for a pub. They use Volcano Coffee Works (http://www.volcanocoffeeworks.com/) beans - a roastery I had never heard of. The coffee tastes quite good. Again, not the best coffee you could get in London, but as Maida Vale lacks good coffee places, The Elgin is currently one of the best places for a coffee in the area. Living not too far away, I am going to The Elgin from time to time and almost always like it there. When friends visit me, I sometimes take them there, and they always liked the place so far. The Elgin is definitely worth a visit for everyone living locally. read more

This place. I want to like this place. It's done up, but not cheezy, leaving a bit of the original 20s decor around. They've free live jazz on Monday. It's clean. Nice art on the walls. Decent crowd. So why the two stars? THEY DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DRINK! No. Seriously. I arrived and they'd run out of beer and had just taken all the cash out of the till to go buy wine down the Oddbins. Then, after they sold a bit of wine, they went to Tesco and bought 24 bottles each of Stella and Beck's. WTF? OK, it was a Monday night. I said "you must've had a busy weekend' to the landlord, eyeing the dozen or so taps and 2 cask ale points. Nope. Apparently it's just like that. The rumour seems to be there's a management/owner shake-up, and the outgoing people refuse to buy anything. Came to meet my brother here on the weekend and was pleasantly surprised to find this shoreditch-esque pub/eatery/drinkery right by Maida Vale tube station. Love the decor in here - especially the loungey leather sofas at the back - perfect for a lazy gossip and a catch up. Food here was excellent - I had the full English, my bro had the burger. Both were top notch. Good beers on tap, and they also make a mean cuppa. Elgin loses one star because I thought the service was a bit off - think they need to work on being a bit more friendly - I'm not much of a fan of being told off for coming to order at the bar (when we were waiting for a good 10 minutes and you still didn't come to serve us). It doesn't especially matter in the big scheme of things if we order at the bar, right? I hope this doesn't sound pretentious BUT.... smily, friendly staff make all the difference and this place didn't cut the mustard in that respect. The management changes... But the toilets still make me gag... The Elgin has been reborn more times than I can care to remember over the last 15 years... Originally an old-fashioned boozer that was typical to the area, it has been modernised number of times, with its latest incarnation based around coffee, craft beers and individual and intriguing spirits. To be fair, the current decor looks great, with lots of natural light during the daytime, plenty of natural, exposed wood and beautiful (quite possibly original?) Green tile work on the left-hand side as you enter. As I have said, the one thing that never, ever changes here, is the stench that rises from the toilets. I have no idea why this is still an issue, but I know that a number of my friends who are local to the area will not drink at The Elgin because of this. Quite a while ago, before its previous bankruptcy and closing, The Elgin used to present live comedy here. On the evening is that I did attend, I really did enjoy the entertainment on offer here. It most definitely gave this place and edge that none of the other pubs in the area could match up to. So, I will undoubtedly return to The Elgin in the near future, but when I do, I will have my gas mask at the ready, if not that, at the very least a peg for my nose. read more

It is a relatively newly renovated pub - had a great make over from original elgin pub. It serves very decent coffee and great brunch and dinner menu. It has a hipster theme running through it and it is quite modern. I used to love going there and it was really one of the best choice in Maida Vale neighbourhood. And to a certain extent, it still is. I just find the place a bit dirty now. The place has a permanent stale alcohol smell and all glasses, cutlery are bit dirty always. Food is supposedly still lovely but I stopped going. I hope it will get better. If you are in the area and looking for a pint/glass and bite, stop by and see if you like it. read more

We came to the Elgin for breakfast on a weekday. It was very quiet, which was nice. We stuck with standard items of toast and jam and white flats, both of which were wonderfully prepared. The jam is homemade and has the best consistency and sweetness. The flat whites were very rich and also recommended on Time Out London - which we were glad to follow! There are two leather sofas at the back great for a cozy place to have drinks. Last time I was here they ran out of buns for burgers so there was a 20 minute wait till the next batch but it came out very fresh so worth it! read more

This ended up being my first meal in London after a long day of traveling from the south of France. After staring at the gastro-friendly menu for a good ten minutes, I ended up ordering the chicken, bacon and leek pie (which came with peas and mashed potatoes) and a Black Isle Brewery Blonde that wasn't on the menu (but I could spot it in the mini fridge behind the bar). Everything was absolutely delicious, and I'm glad I chose this spot as my culinary entrance to London cuisine. Minus one star for the fact that the meal ran me 19 quid, which when translated to dollars feels like I might end up spending my entire month's grocery bill during three short days in London. I love the Elgin! This is one of my go-to places for breakfast. I love the decor - brick walls, offbeat art and chipped enamel pitchers on the tables. The breakfast menu is pretty classic, I always get the avocado on toast. It has a little bit of chili in it that gives it a great flavor. I've also been here for Sunday roast, which is very good. There's an upstairs area that's quieter than downstairs, there are boardgames up there too. It's also dog friendly and I love any place that lets dogs in! read more

The Elgin has become our "holiday local" while visiting London from California. Fantastic place , with delicious food and a engaging, friendly vibe. We've been staying in Maida Vale for 4 days and have had breakfast there twice and just stopped in for a post dinner pint. It's completely different at night than over breakfast, but just what you would want at both times. The Elgin is very family friendly during the day - the staff were all so kind to my 20 month old son during both breakfast visits. There were at least 8 babies in there the first day we were there, but the room is so spacious and the babies so good that it didn't detract from the relaxing atmosphere. At night, a cool (adult) crowd and great music. Lots of locals popping in. The staff know many of them (and their drinks). Besides just being a nice place to be, the food really is excellent. I can't recommend The Elgin highly enough. We're going back for dinner tomorrow, for our fourth visit in five days. read more

What a nice little neighborhood spot! I came here for a couple drinks and a small bite and was pleased with their beer selection (nice local craft brews, ciders and international brews). We ordered the fried squid and chicken pate - both were good portion sizes and delicious. The service was good, but there wasn't a big crowd there, so that probably helped (it was a Sunday around 6-8pm). The waitress did seem mad that we ordered at the bar (to be fair it was our first time here and at any other pub, you order at the bar). She wasn't slow or anything, we just didn't know. It is located just across the street from the Maida Vale tube station, so it is a nice stop after work. The space is embellished with industrial decor along with some cozy couches and tables - large and small. I really like the atmosphere in The Elgin. It is relaxed and friendly with lots of comfy sofas and seating areas making this a great hang out on a Sunday afternoon with friends. The Elgin does really reasonably priced food too - top of the list are their chunky burgers and potato chips priced at just £5!! The pub also shows sports which is good to know as pleasant sports pubs are hard to find in London. read more

We've eaten here several times either for breakfast or dinner as it's really convenient and there aren't that many places to go. Couple of meals have been fairly good and the service is always good. However, as a vegetarian there's poor choice, and that's a compliment - nothing appealing at all. The general menu needs updating. The worst thing about this place has to be the coffee - it's so bitter. Now I think, they think, it's a cool French brand but it really isn't - a cup of instant is better. I went to the Elgin to go watch a gig and I am not so sure I would come back again, unless I was really wanting to see the performer. The bar service was rather slow, although there was one very friendly bartender, the others were all pretty miserable. Like they were doing you a favour by serving you. The layout is quite awkward to although could pass for diversity. They have the area where they have live music at the back and then a dining area and a bar area. A little too cramped for my liking during a very busy time. Not to say I didn't have a good time. Just don't think I would go back. read more
