Avoid this hotel - Billing nightmare and poor cleanliness My husband and I stayed here on 7/28/26 and had a terrible experience. The staff was noticeably annoyed that we booked a King room via Priceline for $241 instead of paying their walk-in rate of $515. They forced us to pay $55 in surprise resort/parking fees at check-in just to get our room key. While the lake views are beautiful, the hotel is just okay inside, and housekeeping missed a leftover pubic hair in our shower. After check-out, they hit my card with an unauthorized $231 charge (which included a hidden $199 fee). Front office supervisor Sezai promised to credit the $199 and parking fees back to my account and email a receipt within days. A week later, I have no credit and no receipt. I have filed a fraud dispute with my credit card company. Extremely overpriced and deceptive. Avoid. read more

The staff at the Edgewater are a stellar example of ineptitude and carelessness with a big scoop of dismissive behavior slathered on top. 5/2/2026 : I purchased a gift card through their gift card portal (supposed to be a Mother's Day gift for my stepmom). 5/3/2026 : the $107 ($100 gift card + $7 shipping) is deducted from my bank account and credited to the Edgewater. 5/10/2026 (Mother's Day) : gift card has not yet been delivered to stepmom's house (Madison to DeForest) 5/11/2026 : I email the Edgewater through their gift card portal inquiring if the gift card has been sent. No response. 5/12/2026 : I call the phone number dedicated to the gift card "department". No one answers. I leave a detailed message asking for a call back or response to my previous email. No response. 5/13/2026 : I again call the gift card "department". Again no one answers. I leave a second message. No response. 5/13/2026 : I call the hotel front desk and I am transferred to the hotel spa. Someone answers! Yay! I explain the situation and I am told "the batch of gift cards purchased during that time period would have all been sent out already". Um. Ok. Where is it then? Can you confirm MY gift card was sent out? The spa person tells me she will find the gift card person and ask her to look into this. I am told someone will call me back. Plot twist...No one calls me back. 5/13/2026 : Late in the day...My dad texts me to tell me they received a note in their mailbox telling them to go pick up a package at the post office. Dad and stepmom have to take time out of their day to drive to the post office. They discover the Edgewater did in fact send the gift card but DID NOT PUT SUFFICIENT POSTAGE ON THE ENVELOPE (that I paid $7.00 to have mailed). Dad has to pay for the postage shortage. In summary... A shockingly repugnant experience. The employees at the Edgewater are lazy and, quite frankly, kind of stupid. They couldn't care less about conducting an ethical transaction much less a positive experience. I sincerely hope everyone at the Edgewater has the day they deserve. **Update** Wow. They didn't even mail the card until 5/10/2026. The person who prepared the gift card had to write the words "Happy Mother's Day" on the card and then waited until Mother's Day to send it...with insufficient postage (that I paid $7.00 for). I'll start off with customer service at this hotel is 10/10- the best I've had in a long time. We stopped in to the bar one night to grab a drink, and were blatantly ignored by the bartender. After 25 minutes, we're able to snag another bartender to grab us a bottle of wine for the room. When we filled out our feedback survey after the first night, pointing this instance out, management immediately contacted us to ask about it. They reached out to us, including physically finding us at the restaurant at the hotel, to apologize and offer to buy our drinks. They seemed really upset and apologetic and it was nice to just be heard. It wasn't a big deal at all, and we didn't make it into one, but it was nice they cared. The room itself had a view of the lake and dock, which was nice, despite being on the first floor and having several people walk by the front of our room. The actual room was small for the price, lacked any extras (water bottles), but it was clean and had the basics. A bar, restaurant, and gift shop are at the hotel; and self parking and valet parking are both offered. read more

The terrace at the Edgewater overlooks Lake Mendota and is beautiful, and the Friday night bluegrass/rock mix was terrific. The food, however, was hands down the absolute worst meal I've ever had. The menu is extremely limited - a fish fry that is prepackaged & deep fried, and still cold in the middle, a hot dog (likely the best thing on the menu), brats that are an unappetizing gray color, also barely warmed, and a pretzel (that may also have been a better choice). The fries, even right out of the fat, were soggy & limp. It was just plain awful. Wisconsin is known for its fish fries & brats. I hate thinking that this is the experience many coming from out of town get. An establishment the caliber of the Edgewater can and should do better. read more

I couldn't find one single thing I did NOT like here. Breathtaking lake views from the hotel and one of the in-house restaurants. Stunning ornamental style and decor yet very practical and thoughtful - there was water and food dish with glass bowl of pet treats at the concierges station (Smile). Subdued yet bright serene ambiance; friendly attentive staff service; absolutely loved the heavenly body/skincare products by L'Occitane. Moved me to order some of my own. There are at least 2 restaurants located within the hotel's edifice - The Statehouse and the Boathouse each served delicacies beyond my imagination as well as delish French toast with maple syrup (Statehouse) and the service was great. We met another Olivia - cheery young g woman sharing my daughters name. Superior quality bedding spacious 3-room bathrooms with dedicated shower & separate bathroom . The Edgewater hotel is beautiful! To give full transparency, I did not stay the night here as I only came for an event: UW's Law School Barrister's Ball. Essentially, this is our little prom night for the law students over at UW. This was my third time coming to the Edgewater for it and every time it was a success. The inside is just beautiful, especially the staircase where I was able to get some really nice pictures at. The scenery outside is also beautiful as, as one can imagine by the name, it is right on the edge of the water. I would be SHOCKED if their rooms were not also beautiful. read more

I called ahead to confirm my room and the representative was kind and friendly. Upon arriving later in the evening, the front desk rep was also kind and efficient. The room was clean and had the basics. You can't put a price on a view like that of Lake Mendota! They did offer a complimentary special pillow (scents to promote certain wellness type of thing). I called and waited; I finally called back to cancel it simply because it was taking so long and I need to get to sleep. Nothing to take a star off as I'm sure they're busy! Just sharing. I was there for a conference and the conference room/catering were standard. Very nice, consistent, reliable. Parking ramp is tight and the elevators are deep into the side of the hotel but those are just characteristics. I'd for sure stay again! read more

I stayed here for a nearby conference. I love that they have a shuttle service which can pick you up and drop you off at the airport, and can take you around town. The room I stayed at was very spacious, with a large bathroom. The gym was split in two, which was a little confusing and in a different hotel, but it was nice. I had a balcony which offered a partial view of the lake. My only complaint is that a person from a different room climbed over my balcony one night which gave me a fright. The hotel security was able to talk to them which was nice. A very nice peaceful hotel. read more

Attended theThanksgiving banquet. Food was cold. Staff did not wait to let us finish our drinks and appetizers before bringing seven or eight plates to serve family style. They gave us small plates to place all this food on. Worst Thanksgiving meal ever. The "bartender" clearly had no idea how to make a bloody mary. We were one of the first to arrive and booked in September. We were given a table where everyone was entering the room -- worst table in the room. The Hotel is in a great location on the Lake. The Staff were all friendly and helpful, even in the blistering cold of winter. The Statehouse - steakhouse is good, but staff were a bit distracted and slow. The management truly care, as they helped resolve an issue we had. The rooms are a bit dated, but what more can you expect from the region. Overall it's a worthy stay, that's still affordable and good. Truly a 4 Star experience that I think they are completely ok with. They don't try too hard, nor ignore guests. I'm guessing this has been a staple in the area for many many years. While taking my husband on a birthday weekend The Edgewater hotel did a fabulous job of acting horrifyingly inhuman and excessively rude. During our check in the agency experienced a system error. Following this computer deficiency they ran my card until it was rendered unusable and flagged by the fraud department. Having left my secondary card at home to cover the cost of my family and farm expenses I was left having paid for a hotel room at the Edgewater that I was not permitted to stay in. While trying to correct the problem I was treated with condescending attitudes and rudely for three days. If you want to pay excessive room rates and not have a place to stay, all while being treated absolutely appalling then book with Edgewater!! There is really nothing quite like being stranded in an unknown city to help you to understand and appreciate good customer service. read more

Well during my stay I visited the bar and breakfast. The bartenders were more interested in speaking to each other than serve drinks. A manager came around the bar and talked the ear off of a bartender and saw no issue in me sitting there drink less. In the restraunt for breakfast we waited for 30 mn for breakfast and other people were served before our group of ten. As usual a manager made an excuse about it instead of owning up to it. The Edgewater has long held a reputation as one of the grande dames in Madison hospitality, and I always worry when trying a hotel like this that the present may not live up to the past. This couldn't be farther from the truth with today's Edgewater. Their service matches the best I have ever experienced anywhere in the world, including at boutique hotels in Europe that hosted me and other concert artists while touring with an orchestra. The hotel is beautifully appointed, the beds comfortable, and the linens first-rate, to the extent that I got the best sleep there that I've had in ages. They even have a pillow menu that includes, among other possibilities, lavender-scented pillows and memory-foam pillows. Room service is excellent: delicious, efficient, personable. I enjoyed their avocado toast, which features Madison Sourdough bread as its foundation. Augie's Tavern is a great place to unwind with friends, and makes great espresso along with excellent cocktails. And yes, the hotel is right on Lake Mendota, and the view is gorgeous, even in February. read more

I asked for a one hour late check out so we could take our daughter to her class and they said no...one hour people. The front desk was unkind and unhelpful. We tried to leave the parking lot after checking out and we could not get out of the garage. Called three times and no one answered, my husband had to get out of the car and go to the front desk. We stayed three nights at The Edgewater Hotel and overall it was a good experience and we would likely stay there again. Please note that when you check in they immediately charge your card for the entire stay, not just for incidentals which is very unusual in my experience. 99.9% of hotels I've been to charge a set amount to cover incidentals up front and then charge the total amount at check out. First the good stuff: - Our room on the 3rd floor had a beautiful view of the lake. - The room was very spacious and stylish, including the bathroom. - The shower was beautiful and large. - The air conditioning worked great and the room stayed very cool during hot and humid weather. - The room had a high quality flat screen TV. - The bed was pretty comfortable. - Overall the customer service was great and housekeeping did a great job of cleaning each day. - In room dining was quick and the food was good. - The hotel is in a nice neighborhood and a great location very close to campus and a few blocks from the capital square. The downsides: - Although the door opened to the lake outside, there was just a metal gate blocking the doorway with no balcony to step outside. - The bathroom only had one light switch which turned on all the lights at the same time. Going to the bathroom in the middle of the night the bright lights completely woke us up, and otherwise we couldn't see. The only way around that was to turn on the light on the little makeup mirror as a night light. - Housekeeping accidentally gave us two shampoos instead of a shower gel, but when we tried to ask the housekeeper in the hallway for a shower gel, she didn't understand a word of English and she wasn't able to help us. We just bought our own shower gel. - The valet service was ridiculously slow. Despite calling ahead, we waited over 30 minutes for our car and there was hardly anyone else around. Only after asking why it was taking so long did they run and get our car - I'm pretty sure they forgot. - The water pressure in the shower was mediocre at best. - The "pool" is actually an extra large hot tub, not a real pool. And it was in a separate building. Not great for kids. Overall because our room was very nice and spacious, the view was awesome and the location was great, we'd probably stay there again. read more

AAA 4 Diamond, 5 stars in my book! Everyone at the Edgewater has a great attitude, very helpful and fun. Jay at the front desk, every time we stopped at the desk or I called on the phone they were super helpful! Everyone at the desk is helpful but Jay was there for a lot of our stay. Ilya drove us around and even accommodated us using the the hotel van for a quick dessert pickup, even moving the car while we were inside to make an easier entry to the car for us. We had a couple drivers over the weekend, each of them kind and friendly. This is one super nice feature of the hotel, we got caught far away when it started raining and it was nice to be able to call to get a ride back. We parked the car for the weekend and never had to hassle with figuring out a new city or managing having a car when picking up bike rentals, etc. The gals at the spa were helpful and friendly even though we were only using the pool and sauna, not spending any money on services. The restaurant, oh man.... hubbies were accidentally those people who show up 5 minutes before the kitchen closes. But everyone was so kind about it, kept assuring them it was not a problem. They got a great meal and great service at closing time. Kudos to everyone. The views from lakefront rooms are amazing, the Statehouse Restaurant has amazing views. The outdoor sitting areas where you can bring your own drink or picnic have good seating and great views. We went to Madison for a relaxing but healthy girls recharge weekend and we are so glad we chose the Edgewater. Rooms are clean, tastefully appointed, comfortable with pretty much everything you need for a stay. The rooms do not have microwaves but we both agreed someone would have helped us to get or use one should we have asked or felt we really needed it. And generally we found the overall atmosphere relaxing and the noise from other hotel guests was minimal. (And it was busy, 4 weddings on Saturday) If you're ever in Madison, I highly recommend the Edgewater. read more

This was my 3rd time staying at the Edgewater. I absolutely love this hotel! The views are so beautiful weather you are looking at the lake or looking towards the Capital. We had a king suite in the Langdon building. Big and spacious with lovely lake views. My only complaint is the frat house is right next door so Friday and Saturday was a bit on the loud side. Other than those 2 nights it was pretty quiet. I love how you can pretty much walk to anywhere or the shuttle at the hotel if available will drive you. I highly recommend brunch on the weekends. Really good! Or if you want a drink at the bar or an appetizer they have a great area for that. In the morning you can go to the market and get a coffee or breakfast to go. read more

We went for Easter brunch in the Grand Ballroom, and we were very disappointed, especially at the price we paid. $68 per person + 22% gratuity. They had 2 seatings (we chose the 12:30 seating), and there was only one food station and a dessert station. We waited in line for 40+ minutes to even get to the food. When we finally got to the food station, the food was overcooked and dry (like most of it had been sitting around since the 9:30 seating); the desserts were also dried out. I don't know what the 22% gratuity was even for - as no one came to our table until we were almost finished eating, and the server refilled the water glasses for two people in our party, but no one else, even though we'd all been drinking water. The final straw was when we found out the hotel wouldn't validate our parking, even though we parked in the hotel lot. So, we ended up paying $15.00 per car - on top of everything else. NEVER AGAIN. read more

This was my first & will be my last time staying at this hotel. Was traveling on business and based on ratings I figured why not trying it out. They have 2 buildings. My room ended up being in the overflow building (which is a LONG walk). Now I'm one who enjoys walking but when I'm on the clock and have business meetings etc don't have the time. We parked our car in the garage located underground the main hotel building. There wasn't really good clear directions in how to get to our rooms. A general map was provided but it definitely didn't do any justice. Our first day started with getting lost in "the tunnel and parking lot". There isn't much signage to try help you navigate the area. We also got locked in the staircase in the parking garage and our keycard didn't work. Also, at check in the rep recommended the onsite restaurant, The Statehouse. On Tuesday, we went to the suggested restaurant "The Statehouse" & made a reservation for 6:45p on Open Table. The host informed us that they didn't have enough servers to accommodate our reservation. She suggested for us to wait at the bar area until the table was ready. Initially she stated 15 min. It took 30 minutes to be seated. And that was after my colleague went to follow up with her directly if a table was ready. It's frustrating observing the host seat others before us & she didn't have enough consideration to proactively follow up with us directly to let us know the table was ready. If tables weren't available than you could have updated your availability on Open Table. Considering the premium cost for the hotel not the experience I would be expecting. One of the front desk mgrs did reach out & made an effort to make things right. I appreciated it. He commented the Food & Bev mgr would reach out to speak with me, which never occurred. Since our rooms were located in the building with the Spa, we asked the young lady in the lobby if we could get a small water bottle (since they supplied these in the room) & she had an attitude and asked us to walk to the main building to purchase one. I was actually considering setting up a Corporate rate for my job & after this experience I absolutely will not. You get better treatment at a chain hotel Hilton, Marriott & IHG. Got to stay here for 2 nights and I am telling y'all, this hotel has got to be the second best I got to stay in. Room was large enough to do yoga, the view is spectacular, the hospitality of the staff were outstanding and y biggest concern... the thermostat was unbelievably amazing!!! I like to sleep with a temperature of 65 below and during my wale hours, 75 and up. The thermostat just do exactly what I want it to do. Fitness center has the lake view. Didn't get to try the Market on 7th floor but I heard from my colleagues that it was pretty good. If I ever find myself on vacation here in Madison WI, I will definitely stay here. Also, you can definitely feel the Christmas Spirit in and out if the hotel. There's a gazillion of christmas trees everywhere! read more

This hotel is terrible. Dust everywhere and the carpet is super musty. The room is tiny and the bathroom has a very bad smell. The staff were rude and unwilling to help, I understand if they can't help but they were just mean and acted like we inconvenienced them for showing up. The room we booked for our fiends wedding was around $290 when we arrived all of a sudden they said there were a ton of "resort fees" and fees for a shuttle to the airport. We drove here we don't need a shuttle.... Our total price for 1 night in this musty crappy rook for over $400. This feels like fraud I am so disappointed with this hotel. It's comparable to a budget motel but i bet the staff would be much nicer there. If you're going to give me a stinky musty tiny room you might as well have polite staff. This is a wonderful hotel. We were in Madison for a business meeting and the Edgewater is where we stayed. Glad we did! The rooms are very clean and spacious. It's great that the bathroom is divided into a separate shower, sink and toilet areas. I would say that It is rather dark when trying to apply makeup! Many hotel bathrooms are these days. We had a lovely cocktail reception on Sunday night on a beautiful patio overlooking the water. Dinner was served in an adjoining room. The food was good, but not very hot. Madison is such a great town with a very low crime rate. We ladies walked around Aline at night and were not worried at all. The story in Chicago is much different! If you are looking for a spot for a conference, I highly recommend the Edgewater ! read more

Very nice- needs some tweeks We got a king room with floor to ceiling windows and on the lake. Stunning! We stayed only one night. Check in was great- the young man who checked us in was so professional and welcoming. Room had a very large bathroom and room was very clean. Couple of things that we weren't thrilled with. 1) Resort fee during a global pandemic. I mean we did not even get a newspaper- 2) 2 Budget motel plastic cups in room- that's it- Come on it's a pandemic- we and most others on our floor were either getting room service or delivery from local eateries. A couple of wine or water glasses in a hotel of this class is the norm. You are charging a "resort fee" after all 3) Very large dog next door barked loud and often. I guess this is allowed. The hotel was obviously not very full - not sure why they stuck someone with such a large, loud dog right next door to an occupied room. Dog was obviously left along in room for long stretches of time. But this is a great option for Madison. Really gave our spirits a lift seeing all the families ( all masked too ) skating and the beauty of the frozen lake. Worth the splurge for a lakeside room. Would stay again in a heartbeat. read more
