When you read online reviews about the best Speakeasy in Chicago, you have your hopes up a bit. Unfortunately, The Drifter was not up to my expectations. We were charged $6 per person for cover because of the "show" and was seated in a "booth" that really meant to be for two people, not three.. In one side there was a guest who was visually uncomfortable to be sharing this tiny space with two other girls instead of one and on the other side there was....well....a trash can. First performer sang for less than 5 minutes and after half an hour of the wait the other two showed up. In total, all the show lasted no more than 20 minutes. Do I think it was worth $18 in cover? No. I think I could spend same amount for three people in Kingston Mines in cover + uber there and we would've had a blast. Also, the place itself is incredibly small and feels very claustrophobic. There is literally no space between tables and one of the servers had to reach through me to serve drinks for the table next to us, because he could not walk through. Odd experience. On a brighter side - I liked that specialty drinks were written on tarot cards. Very unusual presentation. Drinks were also well balanced, but, again, pricey. We paid $62 (without tips) for three drinks and barely 20 minutes of performance. Decide for yourself if you think it is worth it, but certainly was not worth to me. read more

This is a small speakeasy that has a really cool vibe. We got on the wait list at #25 on a Saturday night which let us get in 2 hours after joining the waitlist, so be prepared for that. They have like a dozen craft cocktails listed on tarot cards. I got the Luau daiquiri and my friend got the lonely horseman. We both enjoyed the drinks. We witnessed two live shows; one burlesque and the other belly dancing. Both were entertaining. read more

We love to check different speakeasy places and this is a true blue speakeasy, only thing missing was a password. No password needed here. It is located inside The Green Door Tavern. It's hidden behind a door that looks like a wooden display shelf. It's not a very big place so it's limited seating. What I really liked about this place was the live Burlesque show and that they didn't give you a time limit like a lot of the other speakeasy. They have a wide selections of liquor and offer all different mix drinks. If your up for "anything goes" kind of drink, ask for the fortune cookie. Whatever you pick in the fortune cookie, is the drink you'll get. They also have a limited food menu. We ordered the potatoes which was really good. The drink prices are comparable to other speakeasy which range from $14 and up. Although a little pricy, just remember you are also paying for the experience and atmosphere. One of the better speakeasy around! read more

Really cool speak easy located in the heart of Chicago. Best to come here right at 5 Pm to get a reservation as this place gets packed. They feature all the special drinks on a tarot card and some musical performers throughout the week. Craft cocktails were delicious and the tarot cards were true at least for me lol. Small seating area and meant for parties up to 4. We saw some folks have to sit by the far corner by the door. I really enjoyed my experience as the concept was really cool and I liked my cocktails. Sur charge of $5-6 is nothing when you consider you get to hear some performers. read more

Hostess was rude and unfriendly. She made us wait for 125min Did not give us an option to separate our group or any kind of advice. Awful attitude towards us. read more

I have to start saying that I have not been to this place... and I never will go. My wife and her group of best friends went there for a very special celebration and they were treated like garbage by the hostess. After two hours waiting, a lot of patience, manipulation of the guest list by the hostess, several lies, eye rolling, and shaming by telling them to move out of the way and sending them to "the wall"... they were never let in. Horrible place. Never go. read more

I waited a week before posting my review to keep hot feelings out of it. I'm not going to try and understand why we were treated this way and will only state facts. The following things happened: A group of 6 women celebrating a big bday showed up and put their names down to enter the drifter. The hostess was told the nature of the celebration and that we were from out of town on a girls weekend to celebrate our friend. We were told the wait could be a little long, maybe 45 mins. We understood and went upstairs to get drinks while waiting. Our server, Amalia, was amazing btw if you ever go to the Geen Door Tavern, as were their cocktails. The 45 mins passed, and those other groups of people waiting to get called started descending the stairs. Some were groups of 2 or 3, but others were larger. We kept waiting patiently. But then others started going down that had arrived much later than us. Then we get a text! Finally, after waiting way over an hour. We go down but it turns out we were, and I quote, "taken off the list accidentally", according to the hostess. She claims it was a mistake and that she put us back on and that it shouldn't be long. We, unfortunately, believed her. My friend who had picked The Drifter, told her that we had been there for an hour and a half and would be willing to split up if it meant getting seated earlier. She said no need because we were next on the list. We climbed back up, but should have left. Two hours later, we are still sitting there waiting on the text as we watched so many people go down and into the bar. Our server said that this was weird and that we should go down and talk to the hostess. Down we went...again. This time we were received with passive -aggression with the hostess insisting we would be seated shortly, kept repeating "l understand your frustration, but please move and stand along the wall". That wall was by the bathrooms. More people were allowed in who had arrived a short time before. Again my friend says we are willing to split up because it had been two hours and change. Same response. Li understand your frustration, but please move aside and stand along this wall". Bathroom wall. That's when another member of our party flat out asked her, are you ever gonna let us in or no? Because we had been there for over two hours, and got no response. We asked again, please, split us up, we will take anything at this point. She said no but asked us to step aside so someone else could enter. Believe it or not, we weren't rude or insulting or aggressive. Up till the end we were hoping for a solution and we were even making jokes of the long wait. We really wanted to give our bday girl a memorable night. This is how bad it was. People who had just gotten in line and witnessed the treatment LEFT the line with us after witnessing the exchange. Hindsight is 20-20, right? In hindsight, being magically removed from the list after an hour wait should have been a clue that this woman was not planning on letting us in. In hindsight, someone who says they understands your frustration is telling you they plan to do nothing to fix that. In hindsight, asked to move and stand to the side of the wall is telling you that you are not a priority. Live and learn. Also, the Green Tavern I highly recommend. Ask for Amalia! read more

Enjoyed our evening here yesterday. We arrived at around 7pm. We arrived just in time because we were sat right away and I noticed there weren't any empty tables available after. The drinks were good. Yes, they were on tarot cards. The drinks were good, not the best cocktails I have ever had, but also not the worst. They are $12 which is not bad! I liked the variety of spirits they use for their cocktails. Something for everyone! I ordered a neighborly handshake and the chupacabra (I probably spelled that wrong) The place is small. But what do you expect for a speakeasy under another bar? Of course it's going to be small! I liked the decor. It was very fitting. The service at first was a bit slow. But I think the waitress was by herself for a while. It wasn't until about close to 9p that I noticed another person helping with taking drink orders and such. The servers are super nice and helpful. The entertainment was ok. The first one up was a juggler. Kinda cheesy but he was pretty good at juggling, so there's that. The second was a belly dancer. She was okay, as well. I'd say $6 cover per person for the "shows" was just about right. At least it's no more than $10, which wouldn't have been worth it, given the shows. I don't like that they tack on the cover on your bill after, then I feel like I need to tip based on that. But I guess most people don't carry cash so maybe this is the most convenient. Again, good experience over all! But I don't know if I'd wait over an hour to come back now that I've had the drinks and seen the entertainment. read more

Very cute and tiny speakeasy underneath Green Door restaurant. You almost don't know it's there because you have to walk down the stairs to the bathroom to find it. Maximum capacity is 37 people and other reviews said there is usually a wait on Friday and Saturday nights. We actually were able to make a reservation so had no wait. There are a few bar snacky type foods but not a place to have a dinner. Definitely go for the drinks as they come on tarot cards and the entertainment is a surprising burlesque show! would go again! read more

Neat. Cheap cover. Actually under another bar that seems pretty chill in and of itself. Prices that are reasonable for what it is. Bar snacks and burlesque, and a patronage that is strangely good at paying attention to the performances instead of their phones. As an out of towner in the Chi to visit friends, I enjoyed this spot because why the hell would you not. Highlights: - Ordering stuff based on a short convo with the bartender - Ordering stuff using tarot cards - Ordering too many drinks - Oh god what have I done let's get Korean tacos Lowerlights: - Waiting for a table; though any party larger than four should expect this - There's a jar of fortune cookies where you can play drinkie roulette; though beware, they generally just bring you whatever you picked neat. So I ended up with a glass full of Jagermeister that the bartender helpfully added ice and club soda to after I asked. I recommend coming here with no more than two other people, and be prepared to just hang for a while. If they're full, there's a bar upstairs that has what you need, bruh. read more

Wow what a cool place to have a drink. They have small 5min shows every hour after 7pm Its hidden in the basement there is no advertising for it so look closely. The area is extremely small so expect to be crammed into that space. The drinks on the tarat card are already premixed. So you can't substitute the liquor with another. Bought drinks upstairs in empty bar, our wife's went down to drifter while we paid tab. We were only 3 in line to get in, told them our wife's just came down and got seated. Didn't matter, they made us wait. And you cannot take drinks from upstairs, downstairs. So we slammed drinks, still waited. After 20 minutes; we just went back upstairs to get more drinks. They let 1 of us in to tell the wife's what we were doing. Not busy inside, lots of empty tables. Probably not enough staff. read more

Cool location and vibe. We enjoyed the skyline and the service. Music was a great variety.

This is where I bring everyone who comes into town for a visit! I was so happy to come across this bar last year. Located under the green door tavern, it is a cozy & intimate space with a relaxed ambience. You usually have to wait on a waitlist to get in but the earlier you show up, the better. Even if you do end up on the waitlist, they take your name and number and text you when seats are available. We usually go up to the tavern and have drinks while we're waiting. They offer a variety of rotating signature cocktails on a set of tarot cards with a smaller snack menu available. The bartender that is usually there is so knowledgeable and friendly. He is always more than happy to help you choose a drink or share some history (which this place has a lot of!) They also have live entertainment starting at 7 pm, every hour on the hour, and you never know what you're going to get! There is a $4-6 cover charge that starts later in the evening that is just added to your tab. This place is truly a hidden gem! read more

Love this bar and the shows but had my drink spiked the last time I was there (urine test came back positive for benzodiazepines) - same thing happened to my friend a couple of months ago and we assumed it was another customer at the bar but the fact that it happened twice makes it seem like it's either a regular or an employee doing this. Not a safe place to go. read more

If i could date an establishment, this would be it. This is going to be my new favorite hideout, just in time before winter rolls in. It's got all the right ingredients to a fun yet relaxing night. The place is intimate and exclusive, maybe seats around 30? They have tarot cards as their drink menu. How freaking creative is that? We flipped the cards upside down and randomly selected the cards (aka our drinks). The jazz singers were sexy and the burlesque dancers were even sexier. Every drink we had was enjoyable, whether it was gin, rye, or mescal based. Even the small bites were good. I'm pretty sure i'm coming back this week, and the following week. I tell myself it's b/c i want to show it off to visitors, but it's more that i just didn't get enough of it. Warning: due to the small size, it can be tough to get a seat, especially if you have 4 or more in your party. Come early! Like 8pm. They don't take reservations. read more

Feels weird writing this since this place is sort of supposed to be a secret, yeah? Here we go anyway... Folks, I visited my first speakeasy on a whim this past week, and I may be obsessed. I was getting drinks and some snacks upstairs at the Green Door Tavern, and as I was closing out my tab, I told my waitress, Maria, that I was headed downstairs. She said, "I don't really know if that's a thing, but you can do as you please..." Slick move, Maria. You're good. Luckily, a few people had emptied out before we got down there, so I did not have to wait to be seated. I also rarely mind sitting at the bar, and there were at least four seats open. As others have said, there's a small cover charge, and they just add that to your bill, which makes everything much easier. The cocktails were listed on tarot cards, which was SUCH a cool touch! I was so overwhelmed by how much I loved the place that I didn't get any photos. That honestly never happens, so please take my word for how great this secret spot is. I ordered a drink called the Forbidden Graphic Tee, which had banana and rum. Apparently their drinks rotate frequently, and they have over 100 specialty cocktails. If you're into old burlesque films, most in black and white, and prohibition-style decor, The Drifter Chicago is a really fantastic experience. I can't imagine bringing a stuffy relative in here because there was a lot of tassle-covered-boob action, but I personally certainly enjoyed the hell out of it. It's art and it's history, baby! Our bartender was really attentive as well, and accommodating. The Drifter was one of the coolest drinking experiences I've had in the whole of Chicago. I'll definitely be back! read more

The Drifter - Drink menu on Tarot Cards... - Speakeasies Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Went to the Drifter this past Wednesday. We got downstairs at 5:00 and were immediately seated. The waiter came by with tarot cards that had different drinks on each card. My husband asked for cider and the waiter came back saying they had none. Thought it was odd since upstairs they had cider on the menu..... anyway, he had water instead. The decor in the speakeasy was very cool and they had old burlesque movies playing on the curtain. But the music they were playing in the speakeasy was terrible... it totally killed the vibe. It was some rap and hip hop and alternative..... For a speakeasy they should play some jazz to go with the entire theme. When the drinks came out-tasted very bitter and we told the waiter that we had to get going. He said he'd be back and kept walking past us several times attending to other customers while we were waiting for the check. Almost 6-8 minutes go by and we flagged the waiter a few times and he just kept zipping by.... Eventually we got his attention and left. We were better off staying upstairs than down there. Won't be back there anytime soon. read more

Solid! Amazing drinks, delicious snacks, amazing burlesque and music acts. Our Order: old fashioned (x2), tarot card tequila drinks (x2), a fortune cookie rum drink, and the salt n pepper chickpeas. Environment: downstairs speakeasy. We were able to get right in (pretty awesome). The bartenders were absolutely amazing and made the best drinks we have had in Chicago! The burlesque show was awesome and the guitar/music show was okay. Verdict: this is a definite must visit! Don't leave Chicago without seeing this place and enjoying the drinks! Cocktails on tarot cards? Count me in! This place has awesome unique cocktails! They are a little more pricey, but you pay for the ambiance and the unique liqueurs. They do entertainment on the hour ranging from magic and dancing, to some tasteful burlesque. The only disappointment is that the shows only last for 10 minutes and then you wait longer to see another. A great ploy to get you to spend some moolah on more drinks..! The food is good, but I recommend going elsewhere for a more substantial meal. They have more light bites than meals. If you get in before 6 you don't pay cover, otherwise be ready with some cash to pay! read more

So you need to get to this place early. The seating is very limited, and the last show is at 1am. The good news is that if you add your name on the list, they won't let others in until they verify with you, by phone, face, blood, or morse code. So take your time, add your name on the list and just come back when you're ready, they will let you in no problem. read more

This review is quite late. We were in town during St. Patty's day weekend. This place has a cool idea. I was a little disappointed some considered a lady hula hooping fully dressed in a sparkle covered leotard as burlesque. The entertainment was only like 5 minutes every hour. We were there for 2 hours on a Friday and could have done without the entertainment or cover charge. But the drinks were great. The Tarot cards were a fun unique way to display a menu. I was a little disappointed visiting this place. I tried to call in advance and no answer. I had messaged their Instagram account to confirm whether a reservation was required, they said "we can accept, but not required " however I visited this past Saturday just to be told that there is a 2 hour wait and the bar is also reserved for seating. Great place with equally great cocktails. Loved the shows and the atmosphere. Only issue we had was the holier than thou bartender. Before you make comments to people you should know who you are talking to. I know it's a cocktail bar, that's why I am there, really??? The second bartender was very gracious and helpful. We will be back, and try again. We live in the neighborhood and would love to frequent this place, however I don't need to be talked down to while trying to enjoy a place. Gave it a second try and upgraded review to a 5. We were pleasantly greeted by the doorman and set at a table until 2 bar seats came open. True to his word, he moved us to the bar. The bar staff was excellent this go-round. The pleasant bartender was there again. Very nice, and assisted by another pleasant bartender. I am happy to up my review. I think we are now regulars here. Really cool room inside The Green Tavern. The entrance is downstairs by the bathrooms but if you don't get there early it's a wait. And I got there at 11pm and waited until 1am & only saw 1 show, which lasted about 20mins at the most. So if we had gotten there earlier it may have been better than it was for us. Cool bar hidden beneath The Green Door Tavern. We put our name in early and had a couple drinks upstairs before they called us. Cocktail menu is on Tarot cards. We each had a couple cocktails. Interesting choices. I had one with mezcal. We sat at the bar for a while and then moved to a table near the stage. One of the shows was a woman in a thong doing buttcheek dancing. The other was a magician. Shows only last 10-15 minutes and are pretty entertaining. If you are doing a bar crawl, check this place out. read more

The Drifter and Green Door Tavern are not enforcing COVID-19 vaccination and mask policies. When my friend and I entered the Green Door Tavern, we were not asked for neither our vaccination cards and IDs. When we got to the The Drifter's entrance, we again were not asked for our vaccination cards and IDs. There were also a group of men waiting to enter the Drifter who were not wearing masks and were not told by the employees to put them on. This was my first time going out to a bar and I was very shocked by their lack of precautions. Keep in mind, it was 10pm on a Friday night, so there were many people there. Expect to wait more than an hour to enter. The person managing the door does not allow guests to wait inside and near The Drifter entrance, so you may be asked to wait outside the building, so come prepared with warm clothes. Once inside The Drifter, the ambiance was nice and the performers were very entertaining! I would have given this speakeasy a higher rating if it weren't for their lack of COVID-19 policy enforcements. read more

Crazy awesome place to go! Went on a Tuesday night, was horror movie night, showing clips of classic horror movies on the projection screen, very cool!!! The Drifter! One of the most love-hate relationships ever. I've been here a couple times now on Chicago visits. I have returned because I live for the late night entertainment. The bar upstairs is cool and all, but head downstairs for the whimsical evening entertainment. From drag to magic shows, the live entertainment will surely be just random enough to keep your attention. The obvious cocktail choice is the fortune cookie. It costs $10. Sometimes you get an amazing choice cocktail, whose menu price is $13/$14 and sometimes you break the cookie open and get a shot of Malort. Tragic, I know. It never works out in my favor, but it's always fun to try. My only qualms with this spot are that they are unwilling to split checks. At the end of a really nice night, my friends and I had to get a calculator out and figure out our bill. There were 6 of us, so it was too many drinks for one of us to grab the bill, but also confusing enough for it to take 20 minutes. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I feel like it would've been faster for them to take care of it. read more

A great little speakeasy, tucked below the Green Door Tavern. (Head to the back, go downstairs, and look for the door on the right before you hit the bathrooms--it looks more like a shelf of knick-knacks.) We came early and were able to find a seat. By the time we left, around 7 pm on a Saturday, it was standing room only. This place only seats around fifty people and is quite popular, so you have to plan to stand or wait. But if you can get a seat, Drifter rocks. The bartenders were friendly, explained drinks and made recommendations. The regular menu is terrific, and the unusual Tarot card options (with drinks printed on the bottom of ten Tarot cards) were tempting. One thing I really appreciated in a place like this was that the bartender went out of his way to say they would also be happy to make standard cocktails. (I assume this is always the case, but sometimes ordering a Manhattan can seem odd in a place with a menu chockfull of novel drinks made with liquors I've never heard of.) We weren't there during any live entertainment, but the music was fun, the volume appropriate, and the videos of old toons and racy-but-tasteful peep show clips were interesting. We found it a fun, small, and inviting place for interesting drinks. read more

I like the concept of Speakeasies. This one shares some of the theme of the bar above as far as decor goes. Some of the cocktails are presented on tarot cards and there's also a paper menu. There's a cover charge which they're able to add to your ticket/ bill if you're not carrying cash. None of the menu items spoke to me so I ordered a Last Word. There was a performance on the stage that I didn't really vibe with and they were only at the top of the hour. I'm curious what the other ones were like. It was a dude dancing. The staff was friendly. Thought the chairs could have been more comfortable. They say speak easy and I get how people that plan and design bars can interpret that very differently. I guess I was hoping for the lights to showcase that with some dimmer lighting or colored lighting to put you more in a speak easy mood. read more

A nice little gem in the most unexpected place. I knew this place existed but when I tried to come here before early in the week it was closed.
